Who: Kenth, Alex and Zul
Where: Barton, Kenth's clinic
When: Early afternoon

Another day, another pile of work, another group of strangers met. The doctor had just finished his recent appointment, and was now sitting in front of his small desk, reviewing his last patient's records.

Kenth's clinic, being a private practice, was not popular and overcrowded with visitors. The rather relaxing and slow-paced atmosphere would have frustrated him if he was a few years younger. But for now, Kenth find it rather comforting. There was a kind of freedom that he had missed a long time ago, allowing himself to be lazy, or to do whatever he'd liked to do.
More importantly, it gave him a steady income and allowed him to continue his own research at a pace he desired.

Speaking of research.

Kenth glanced up at the clock. It was just pass lunch-time. The doctor shifted in his seat and adjusted his clothes. Another appointment should be coming anytime now. It was not an appointment to see another patient, but something a lot more exciting. Kenth was going to receive his new research project today, and someone was said to be delivering his new subject to him. The new research project, provided by another supposedly brilliant doctor in Gambino, sparked Kenth's interest when he first heard it from a colleague. It was something the doctor never believed to be true, to create strange lives out of impossible objects. For a man who had devoted half of his live to science, Kenth forced himself to participate in this new project that challenged all his previous believes. The doctor believed that it would be an eye-opener for him, something new to see, to experience, to learn.

In waiting, Kenth became conscious of his surroundings, as time quietly passed with each tick of the clock. Someone should be arriving by now...

No.

No no no no no freaking way.

She'd been able to repress her initial thoughts when she'd first gotten the order to drop off the essence and soul bottle. She'd been able to convince herself that there was more than one Kenth Larine in all of Gaia, and that this was no exception. It'd be some one else. She'd do her business and be on her way back to her life that was decidedly lacking said Kenth Larine.

No.

Alex stood in front of the small building, wide green eyes pinned on the sign. Dr. Kenth Larine, MD, Private Practice. There might have been more than one Kenth Larine in the world, but the chances of them being a doctor and interested in the Lab's works were slim to none. Straight teeth worried over her bottom lip, gaze flitting between the sign and the door, lifting her free hand to shakily brush her black hair from her eyes. Had he changed? Would he remember her--

Her expression brightened. There was a chance he wouldn't recognize her! After all, she'd dressed more like a female back then, even her hair wasn't as long as it was now. But would she be disappointed if he didn't remember? Maybe she wasn't even a thought in that thick skull, no doubt no room with all his knowledge to recall an old friend, an old partner...

"Are you okay?"

The Italian jerked out of her reverie, turning her gaze onto her charge. Quite frankly, she was spooked. "Yeah, sure," she waved her free hand dismissively, the one clutching the suitcase near white-knuckled in her effort for control. She was a grown woman, no longer the gangly awkward youth of the past. She was successful, she'd grown into her own path and had reached her dreams, surpassed them in many ways. What was in the past should stay there, and there was no need for her to freak out.

"You're not okay."

Zul observed his woman jumping again, crystalline eyes taking in every twitch and flex of her muscle. She was nervous, and it was something he'd never seen before, not even in her last encounter with the white-haired Aphismet. He didn't like this weak, fragile thing he was looking at, showing his displeasure with the absence of his usual smile. "I'll do it," he offered with mild disgust, holding out his gloved hand. He didn't see what the big deal was, it was just a suitcase, not like it was going to bite her. It didn't occur to him that the source of her anxiety could be what was within the building.

She shook her head, tips of her long hair bouncing behind her with a life of their own. "It's fine Zul, I can do it," she gave him a tight smile, extending a hand to squeeze his before moving to open the door.

Her hands were unusually cold, making his frown deepen dangerously before it disappeared all together. He floated after his Guardian, wings stretching and flexing in a quiet warning to anything that might be upsetting what was his.

"Wings in," she told him softly, lifting her chin and observing the office. It was...normal. Quaint. And quiet. Things she never associated with the man she was thinking of. Maybe she was wrong...? "Doctor Larine?" she called out, not wanting to intrude upon his office. There was a vague hope she was wrong, that she'd worked herself up for nothing, that maybe her world wouldn't get the thorough shaking she was anticipating.

The Raevan donned his smile and looked around the office as well, hunkering down by the chairs to examine the magazines. He looked observational but he was watching, listening, senses acutely aware of his woman and his surroundings. The rings in his wings tinkled together as he folded his bone limbs against his back; if there was no threat, he'd obey her wishes for the time being.

Kenth almost leaped from his chair as soon as he heard footsteps. Reminding himself to not get too excited, the doctor resisted the urge to open the door and instead re-adjusted his attire. The deliveryman was outside---or the delivery-woman. The female's voice was somewhat familiar, but the doctor paid no heed to it. Finally making sure that he was good to appear in front of the other, Kenth opened the door, as calmly as he could.

"I am here." Words were out of his mouth before Kenth appeared himself, much like when he was younger, unable to control his emotions. In a few steps the doctor made his way into the office lobby, where the delivery person was shouting and waiting. The first thing he set his eyes upon was the rather large and floating creature behind the woman. Kenth's eyes were wide for a moment, although they only got wider when he shifted attention to the woman herself. He knew the voice was familiar, but what were the chances that her face was familiar as well? Dark hair, green eyes...There were also differences, however, the most obvious was the aura that the other emitted. It was not what he'd imagined her to look, perhaps she was not the same person, but then again, how many years had it been from the last time he'd seen her?

Pushing back the distracting memories, the doctor focused instead on the suitcase---no doubt his research subject---as well as the creature that he first laid his eyes upon. Hm, interesting...was the delivery person also a participant in the research project? Kenth could only deduct from the fact that the creature was obviously not human, for it lacked most body parts and can still somehow move freely on its own. Observing the creature fueled Kenth's interest, and made him relax a little from the disturbingly familiar face that the woman possessed.

"I take it that you are from Lab 305?" Clearing his voice a little, Kenth looked at the woman, his glance hesitant as he avoided seeing her directly in the eye.

She saw him first, and her stomach plummeted. There was no mistaking the pale hair and eyes as blue as Zul's, the glasses on his nose and his slender frame. The woman had him memorized and it had never left her.

Green eyes fell to the briefcase as though inspecting it to make sure the clasps were holding, but it was mostly to keep her expression neutral. Alex wasn't sure what to do, or what to say; she was almost positive from the sudden silence that he at least recognized her to a degree. She'd never entertained the idea of having to be in this position, after so many years gone by. Taking a deep breath, she replied, "I am," and lifted her head to look at him, but was swiftly interrupted by Zul.

The Raevan had heard the calm voice and turned, pupils thinning to a point as they rested on the owner of said voice. Who was this? This man of white hair and blue eyes like his own? He could forgive the paleness, immediately focusing on the similar appearance, drawn by the aura of intellect that surrounded him. The Raevan floated up and next to his Guardian, marbled wings flexing behind himself and thus behind his woman; he was impressed. No wonder she'd been so apprehensive! He was a fine human!

Alex cringed a little at the intense stare her charge was giving Kenth, extending a hand to brush her fingers over his exposed spine. "We are," she ammended, "from the Lab. This is Zul; he's a Raevan and my charge." She breathed a little easier as the Frei offered a bow, ribbon crinkling with the effort. "I'm...well, you kinda know that already," she laughed quietly, betraying her uncertainty about the whole situation, "I'm Alex now. I'll help you with the papers and answer any questions you have." Another first - she'd never, even in her wildest dreams, anticipated knowing more about anything than the pale-haired man before her.

"Zul," came the purred agreement, his smokey voice carrying through his languid smile, extending a hand in greeting. The blue lines on his glove pulsed rhythmically. "Lahreen?" he inquired in return. He had a habit of introducing himself and learning things himself, not second hand through Alex. His bone wings flexed before resting more comfortably against his bare back, vibrant eyes resting upon the doctor's face.

The suitcase moved so that both her hands were grasping the handle, a little grateful Zul was taking the attention as usual. "Forgive him, he has a latent curiosity about humans," she offered quietly, not trusting herself to speak any louder. It still all felt like a fragile situation that could easily be shaken or shattered if she was too boisterous.

Kenth nodded to Alex's words, his expression unmoving. Well, it changed a little when the woman refused to properly introduced herself. She recognized him, which must mean she was the person he remembered. Kenth wasn't sure if he should be upset or happy with the unsuspected reunion, but one thing's for certain: the woman had changed, a lot, to the point where she's barely recognizable. As opposed to himself, whose change were probably negligible in her impression, the Alexis he once knew had grown from a slender young girl to a fierce looking woman. Kenth was surprised at the change, more so than the fact that the two were now face to face, none of them ever imagined themselves in this situation.

Just as Kenth's eyes finally gathered courage to look at Alex again, the creature squeezed himself into the conversation. A Raevan, a test subject, but nonetheless very much alive just like he and Alex. Finding themselves an excuse not to look at Alex, Kenth's eyes shifted to Zul, who extended his hand in a humanly manner. The doctor didn't take the creature's hand. Instead, he eyed the Raevan cautiously as if he was some kind of dangerous beast (well, he was, in part).

"Zul...right. It's my pleasure to meet you, and my pleasure to meet you again, Alex." Kenth's voice trailed off in the end, exposing his uncertainty toward this meeting. If they were in the same research project, would that mean he and Alex will be working together again after so many years? The doctor was reminded how awkward and frustrating it was back when Alex was his partner. It was not because the woman was any less intelligent than he was, but something else, something that Kenth could not name back then. He knew what the feeling was after she gave up and left, but he never thought the feeling would suffice, after all these years...

But the woman changed, and in a way, so did he. Kenth decided that if they were to work together again he should forget what happened in the past and start anew with the woman, or at least try to, for he knew it would be difficult.

"I'm Kenth Larine." The doctor forced himself to smile a little after a long period of inspection on Zul. "Thank you for delivering the project to me, I do appreciate it."
PostPosted: Wed Mar 11, 2009 7:03 pm

There was no questioning if it was him. The same stand-offish individual, but - she glanced up in time to catch the smile, forced as it was. Maybe things do change after all...

She couldn't help but shrug at his formal greeting. It wasn't a pleasure, it was damned nightmare, but it was standing there staring between her and her charge and was now a part of her life so long as she worked at the Lab. The thought was oppressive. Green eyes flicked over to Zul to observe his face before speaking again, holding up the briefcase for Kenth to take. "Your materials are in here, so are the papers I need you to sign to state you received the items in one piece and that you understand your obligation." Alex was surprised at how smoothly she spoke, how cordial. Apparently two people could play this game.

The demonic Frei looked intruiged by the lack of greeting more than put off by it, turning to look at his woman. Bright eyes sparkled with their own inner fire, and indeed, his skin warmed in his excitement. "Alix, you know him?" he posed the question to her, his tanned fingers adjusting the piece around his bicep. "He's--"

Her hand found its way over his mouth, startling him. "Yes, Zul. Ask your questions later, please." The tone she used at the flick of her eyes gave no room to argue, asserting her position between them. Her fingers slid off his face as her charge suddenly became more fascinated with her than the Doctor, at least for the time being. "Anyway, I don't know if Kyou told you the items you're receiving and their significance, but if you have questions pertaining to that, I'd ask that we speak somewhere private." Alex tilted her head to indicate Zul; she would not speak of their formation in front of a Raevan himself.

The Raevan, in turn, was not paying attention to the conversation anymore. He floated around his Guardian, noting the change in her posture and the aura she gave off, quite curious to the sudden stance of domination she'd taken over her previous trepidation. Zul was pleased that he had chosen this one to be his, as she always supplied him with such curiosities that he was never bored. "Later," he agreed, the tone of his voice suggesting there'd certainly be questions to be asked.

Kenth watched as Alex handed out the briefcase in a professional manner. The woman seemed to have no trouble acting formally and doing her job, and Kenth found the frustration creeping back to his spine. Yes, she was someone to be admired, her efficiency and dedication never changed. In a way, the younger Kenth saw Alex as a challenge, a competition who annoyed him with her productiveness. She had a strong mind, it was something Kenth found to be admirable and threatening at the same time.

"I see." Kenth nodded, eyes focused on the briefcase. If he hadn't realized when the two met, it was clear now that the competition started again between the two. At least, it felt so to Kenth. With matching formality Kenth took a step back and gestured to the small room behind the lobby. "And as you wish, why don't we go inside of my office to discuss the paperwork? I am very interested in starting this project and working with Dr. Kyou...." The doctor glanced up at Zul almost nervously, seeing as the creature was quite attached to his "owner". "Will it be okay for Mr. Zul (assuming that he was a male) to be left alone?"
PostPosted: Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:21 pm

"He'll be fine," she replied breezily, turning to look at her charge, who was still circling her like a predator. "Zul--"

"I know," he replied quietly, blue eyes resting upon her green ones. His mouth curved into a delighted grin, his middle horn glowing with a soft white-hot pulse. "I'll stay. Magazines, pictures...I know." Rich laughter poured from his lips, floating beyond her back into the waiting room, wings stretching in a grand display once again, tilting his head to the side and observing the clean room as though it were the most interesting thing he'd seen in his short life.

"Don't burn anything," she chided him lightly, rewarded with knowing laughter. Shaking her head, absently smoothing her hands over her tank top, she nodded to Kenth and moved towards the indicated room. "Nice place," she commented a little stiffly as she entered the office, affording herself only a few brief moments to gather the sight of the room - as immaculate and full of paper as she'd expect. Alex turned then to face the older man, quiet and waiting for the questions. She wasn't sure she wanted to offer up anything or ask how he'd been, why he'd...

Her eyes closed briefly, forcing herself to focus. This was work. She had to be professional, and she was not the type to give up so easily. Brilliant greens opened again to rest upon the pale man, retaining her silence.

Kenth eyed the creature again, unsure if he should really be leaving Zul out by himself. Alex seemed to be confident, although her "don't burn anything" comment shoved a great deal of chills down the doctor's spine. Nothing was important in the front lobby, most paper products placed there were for patients' entertainment while they were waiting on busy days. However, setting anything on fire in the lobby would pose a dangerous threat to his office, where the paper products were important. In addition, the smoke would attract neighbors, people passing by, firetrucks, etc etc...Kenth shuddered as the unpleasant possibilities entered his head. Seeing, however, as the woman already walked into his office as she was invited, he had no choice but to follow, looking at Zul for the last time before closing the door behind him, but not shutting it completely in case things do get out of control.

A dangerous beast, would that be something he'd be ready to work with? Kenth knew he couldn't back out now, especially not when the woman whom he considered a rival before positioned herself into this project and handling a wild creature like Zul. Kenth nodded automatically as Alex made her next comment, suddenly realizing that Zul had somehow made a distraction in his mind which drove his thoughts away from Alex and his past. For that, the doctor was thankful.

"Thank you." Kenth replied quietly, eyes quickly glancing at the woman and, realizing that she was looking at him, quickly changed focus to the paperwork that were piled on his small desk.

"Would you like to have a seat?" Taking a few steps to pass the woman, the doctor approached the desk and started to gather the documents scattered about the surface in order to make space for anything Alex may bring up. He pointed at the chair opposite to the desk with his free hand, the one that patients would normally be sitting in during check-ups. "Please excuse the mess here, but do make yourself comfortable."

Which was hard to do, considering the two were reunited after so many years in a small room, alone, and a difficult relationship in the past burning in their thoughts.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 11, 2009 9:00 pm

Bright eyes blinked at him once; twice; three times, waiting. For what? A punch line, a joke, something that told her he was not seriously asking her to stay longer than she had to. Make your self comfortable were not words that Kenth Larine uttered. He didn't invite people to stay, didn't care if they saw the mess of work he had. And yet...

...and yet...

Crap. Had she been wrong?

Alex slowly slid into the offered seat as though in a dream, her gaze a little untrusting as it settled upon the man, watching him clean his desk a little. Swallowing hard, she turned her eyes away, not wanting to be rude during a business call. "It's fine. My office is worse." Slender brows furrowed in mild confusion over her eyes, looking at the briefcase before taking a deep breath, smoothing her expression into something closer to neutral. It'd do no good to look like she was accusing him of breathing her air. Her gaze again settled upon him, really looking at him this time; he really hadn't changed in appearance, but there was something different about his eyes that she couldn't quite pin down.

"So!" she tried to start conversationally, resting her hands in her lap, crossing her legs at the ankles. "Anything I can expand on for you? Paperwork is in the case, by the way, don't let me forget that." Not that she would, but it got her back into the mindframe of work to be done, of people to meet with and Raevans to teach.

As the papers were cleared off his desk, Kenth sat down in a chair beside it, placing his hands on the surface so he appeared to be concentrating on business. His eyes wandered across the room, looking down at the suitcase several times to remind himself that he was in the middle of starting a new project that was much desired. Alex's presence, however, made it difficult for him to concentrate. The doctor felt nervous ever since she stepped into his office and even more so every time he tried to look at her. His original thought of starting anew seemed like an impossible dream at the moment, for whenever his eyes focused on hers the memories always came rushing back. She changed, in appearance, but what about her thoughts and feelings?

Alex's seemingly upbeat words drew Kenth back to reality. Realizing that he had been perhaps staring at the suitcase for too long, he decided that it was best to open it. "Yes, about this project...I really don't know a lot about it." While reaching for the suitcase Kenth replied, "I do understand that from a scientific perspective what Dr. Kyou was experimenting with seems absurd, but he himself was an interesting man."

Finally grabbing the suitcase, Kenth placed it on the desktop before continuing. "May I open it?"
PostPosted: Wed Mar 11, 2009 9:53 pm

"Kyou is an amazing man," she agreed, recalling the upbeat doctor with fondness. "Brilliant. Reminds me--" of you, she almost said, but her mouth was clamped shut before the words could betray her. Alex gave him a faint smile, knowing full well he was smart enough to know what she was going to say, and that her pride kept her from saying it just then. At the question, she nodded, motioning to the case. "Please do. It's yours now."

She'd already seen the round bottle with the light green sleeve and had personally documented the essence with the constant cloud; she didn't need to see them again. Instead, she simply watched him, awaiting his reaction, and more selfishly, thinking about something other than the business at hand. The woman herself had questions that kept bubbling behind her lips but were not permitted to be spoken, leaving her feeling unsatisfied and more than a little annoyed. Perhaps Alex didn't deserve an answer after all this time, anymore than he deserved to have one demanded of him, but she still wondered. She hadn't thought about it in a long time, but those days were some of her fondest memories, however tied with the bad that they were.

A light sigh escaped her. This was much more tiresome than it needed to be, all these pretenses and faces both of them were trying to maintain. A soft smile curved her lips, relaxing a little as her gaze remained upon his familiar face. "The project is simple, in theory. The soul bottle," she pushed herself up to stand, pointing at the bulbous bottle within the case, "will remove the soul of any living thing you put it next to. I know this will be odd for you, but you must remember that all things have a soul in this context - even the rocks outside your office."

Her slender finger shifted then to the fel essence. "The essence assigned to you. It's a cloud, obviously, but it doesn't seem to fade or dissipate, making it unique. Study it as long as you'd like, but don't break the seal." She took a seat again, resting her arms on the side of the chair and leaning forward a bit, getting excited as she talked of that which she was passionate about. "Keep in mind the unique nature of both the essence and the soul, because they'll be in harmony, forced or otherwise, when it's complete."

For that second, she could even forget the past. A hand snaked into the back of her jeans, procuring a card and sliding it over the desk to Kenth. "If you have any problems or need help, or are just ready to turn in the vials, give me a call." The card read her full name - with the title of 'doctor' before it - and below, her profession: Doctor Alexandria Vizcatti; Chief of Studies; Department of Zoology. "My cell is always on, so don't worry about the time."

With Alex's permission the doctor carefully snapped open the seal that held two lids of the suitcase in place. Lifting the lid open, Kenth listened quietly as the woman introduced what was inside to him while his eyes wandered across what was inside. A clear, round bottle, much like the bottles he had used before in experiments, the only difference being that the bottle was sealed shut, leaving no space for anything to seep in. For a moment Kenth had the funny idea, imagining himself being sucked in by the bottle. It was a rejection to Alex's words by his scientific instinct. Souls, such thing never existed in science.

He shook his head and looked at the other bottle---jar, rather---as well as the cotton-looking substance inside. Solid cloud? Kenth would have brushed it off as a piece of joke if he wasn't staring at it himself. Intrigued, he lifted the jar up to his face, carefully observing as he turned the jar around to make sure that it wasn't just a piece of cotton he was looking at. On some aspects the cloud certainly looked real, floating freely inside of its container. It also was no doubt solid, as Kenth failed to discern any liquid or gas movements he would associate with normal clouds. "This is interesting indeed." The doctor murmured as he continued his observation, fascinated and temporally forgetting what was around him. It was not until Alex approached and put her card on the desk did Kenth realize that he was still with her. His head snapped a little when the woman spoke, forcing him to look in her direction.

"Oh, I'm sorry." Kenth apologized as he took the card, and raised an eyebrow when he saw what was written on it. Zoologist? Wasn't she studying anthropology before? In a small voice he read what was written on the card, just to make sure he wasn't mistaken. After several times Kenth looked up, doubts showing in his eyes, but words remaining smooth as he spoke.

"Thank you. "

A pause. Realizing that the delivery was pretty much over, Kenth debated if he should ask more questions regarding the project or ask more about woman herself. The latter of which was, of course, a rather awkward subject to touch on, but Kenth could not help but to wonder at the reason the woman changed her interest. The doctor stared down again at the card, trying to figure out something to say as the pause dragged longer. Eventually he sighed, putting the card down beside the suitcase.

"The...Raevan outside, Mr. Zul, was he created from this process as well?"

Personal matter could wait, Kenth decided. The other didn't seem like she'd want to talk about their past either.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 30, 2009 6:54 pm

She wasn't sure what impressed her more: that Kenth was actually listening to what she was saying without refute or that he had said "I'm sorry" and "thank you." Alex was an intelligent woman, mostly able to pick up signals from others through their reactions and antics; Kenth was no exception, perhaps even one she knew better than most, and his long gaze upon her card made it obvious to her that he was confused on some level. What she couldn't tell is if it was over the information on the card or the thoughts it bred in his mind.

Fingers tapped idly on the arm of the chair, keen green eyes upon the light haired doctor, a midnight brow raising in amusement. "Just Zul is fine - he's still confused by some titles." She remembered his meeting in the mall with the people who introduced themselves and how he had confused 'mister' for a person's name. Adjusting herself on the chair, she crossed her legs at her ankles and inclined her head at the inquiry, "He was. I had no part in the soul capture, but he was entrusted to me by Kyou himself, as well as his partner."

Alex remembered visting the doctor in the hospital, the state of his hands and his upset over it. She couldn't help but smile a little; her employer was such an interesting man. No doubt one Kenth would not get along with.

((OOC Note: The RP of her receiving Zul hasn't been completed, so I wont be able to give detailed responses to any questions about Zul's pick-up beyond this. XD; ))

"I see..." In other words, the creature outside, even though he may look fierce, was as clueless about the human world as a child. Kenth couldn't help but to wonder what would happen if a creature like him popped out in front of him. The doctor was not a good caretaker for children, the situation for him would be quite chaotic.

Soul capture. Kenth picked up the next seemingly important phrase in Alex's words. "I thought you only need to put this bottle next to something to gain a soul?" He glanced at the woman, and picked up the soul bottle in his other hand. As he had previously observed, nothing seemed to be strange about this round container. It was hard for him to imagine something abstract and foreign like a soul would be residing in this bottle. Then Kenth realized it was not a good idea to ask Alex such a question because as she herself mentioned, she took no part in the said process. The doctor shook his head and set the bottle near one of his document folders. "Soul capture...it sounds like one of those fantasy movies."

Not that Kenth had seen one.

Then the conversation stopped again. Kenth took the time to walk across the room and peeked out at the creature out in the lobby. A Raevan, something completely out of scientific principles...or was it? Perhaps there was an aspect of science that humans never discovered, such as the make up of souls?

"So tell me about Zul." Kenth cleared his voice while still staring outside. "How...what is his nature?"
