play favorites when he chooses section leader/drum major/captains. omg no one in my band thinks i'm gonna get drum major because my bd plays favs and is beginning to hate me for some reason! first of all, i am not the best flautist in my band and he has to embarass me in front of the whole band by telling me "oh you need to work on this..." or "oh you need to work on that..." but he never actually tels me how to fix it! oh and he praises the kid that is up against me and he sux as bad as i do. he cant conduct worth the crap either but he is praised by my bd. i got a couple questions: do u have a bd like that? also, wot shud i do to actually get dm without him just picking because so and so has a better personality or so and so is better looking or whatever!

mine played favorites with the whole band.

there's a select few of us that are really close to him, me being on of them. n___n
you just have to be funny, be able to take a joke, and not be creeped out by his open pervertedness. hahaha.

I think you should practice. A lot. If he keeps saying that you need to fix stuff, practice it. Then, once you can play the piece, he has nothing to complain about. Another bit of advice if you're starting out with your instrument is to consider getting lessons. When I started up on the flute, I was HORRIBLE. Another thing that didn't help was the fact that I started about two years after most people. After lessons, I was caught up with them and I'm partially proud to say that I'm third chair in my high school's symphonic band. [partially because i was first at the beginning of the year but then an unfair seating test happened and i lost it anyway enough of my ranting...] I hope this helps you. I honestly hope it helps.

Best of luck to you,

do you practice often?

I'd suggest practicing as often as possible. Not only will your playing skills become better than the other kid, but BD's always seem to know who takes their instrument home and he might like to see that you're trying.

haha i've been playing the flute for 6 yrs now and he tells me i still suck just simply because i cant get D and up on the upper octave to play soft. he doesn't give me any credit for learning sax either! i just learned sax the beginning of this year and he expects me to play it like a professional! oh and the kid running against me at dm is also a sax player and he's constantly making fun of me because i'm just learning. oh and the only time he treats me like he actually likes me is when he's teasing me about...like my friend becoming gay and he thought i said i was gay. He also treats me like he likes me when i play the guitar in winter percussion (and i've played that for only like...2 months). I really hope he doesn't play favorites on the dm auditions, but i have a feeling he well.

D? As in the D above the staff bar? Anything above the staff bar is going to be difficult to play at a soft dynamic. It just takes practice because the more you train your embrochere, the easier it will be to get the dynamic level you want for that note. I'm still training my embrochere because we recieved some pretty choral music and the notes are in the low register on a flute, and it's marked as a mezzo forte, but it's a bit difficult for me to play those that loud since I trained my embrochere for the higher notes.

In short, practice, practice, practice. That is the best key to playing better. Of course, if you can find a friend to practice with [same instrument usually works out better but sometimes you can find some of these] will be a great opportunity to practice some sightreading with some duets.

Also, be very active in band class. I know they don't ask a lot of questions, but when they do, raise your hand and participate. In my class, after we sightread, we talk about stuff we can work on. It's usually like dynamics and balance and intonation. If you show a steady interest in playing, your teacher is going to notice.

hey thanks! yeah he finally told me how to work on it yesterday. just make the hole smaller and faster air i think he said. he also sed what u sed. lots of practice. i had mpa's last night and it was the first time ever i have played the upper octave soft. i can get up to a "c" at a pianissimo, but anything higher is impossible for me. well...its actually kinda weird, i can get the high f to a high Bb down to a mezzo piano, but i cant get Db, D, Eb, and E out below a mezzo forte. i did last night though wich was awesome smile

Mine acts like a dictator! He once had us practice for 3 hours without a water break and we had to run laps around the school that day cause people wouldn't stop talking! xp

Most BD have faves. Idk, I've had 5 band directors in 6 years and each one had their favorites. I think it's because BD's know us on a more personal level than most teachers. But our latest one, the one that's stuck around the longest is really good about not "playing" favorites. She has her's, don't get me wrong, but she's makes sure that they recieve the same treatment as everyone else when it comes to honors and disicipline.
In my p.o., favorites are gonna happen no matter what, and not just in band, so you just kinda have to learn how to deal.

also, BD's are normally harder on their faves, and expect more/better from them, just like how when a parent coach's their kid, the kid is expected to 10x better then everyone else.
