Acceptance was hard for Kohana, accepting that she had come to feel for Mafunde, accepting when she became pregnant, accepting that one of her sons had been kidnapped. All these things she had tried to meet at first with denial, now she tried to embrace things. It became easier as time passed, and though she still felt the need to leave her family for days at a time, she no longer ever felt the desire to leave them forever. She loved her sons with all her heart and as they grew she lavished each with love and praise.
Today she had decided to take her sweet green son out to hunt with her. She had always worried that because of his striking and unusual coloration Maalum would feel outcast or unloved, yet strangely just the opposite was true. She didn't mind one bit indulging her son and reminding him that he was special, no more special then his brothers, but still special to her. She found a quality to love in each of her boys.
She glanced back and smiled softly at Mafunde, no doubt he would find a way to entertain their other sons while she took Maalum out. "Come along Maalum, the earlier the hunt begins the higher the chance of returning a success."

Maalum was delighted to be going out on a hunt with his mother. It felt like it had been a long time since he had gotten to spend any time with her, and whenever he got the moment to enjoy himself without his brothers around he indulged in it. Of course he loved them, but it was always so hard to sit for long periods of time with them. They didn’t treat him quite how he felt he needed to be treated. With his glorious color and how he stood out so prominently in the den he felt they probably needed to treat him with a bit more respect, rather than leap on him in pretend scuffles whenever possible.
He didn’t like to mess up his green pelt, didn’t they know that? Not that he could be THAT mad at them- at least they liked to play with him. Though, in all honesty, who wouldn’t like to play with him?
He was as fun as he was gorgeous.
Grinning at his mother, Maalum sprang forward, falling in stride beside her soon enough. Looking up at her, he continued to smile, showing off small, white teeth. “Let’s get something big!” he told her, brimming with his usual confidence, “I’m sure we can do it!”

A soft chuckle escaped her after realizing how enthused her green and yellow son was to get out with her for some time alone. She tried to spend some time alone with each of her sons, never favoring one over the other. Today she hoped to aid her sweet Maalum in sharpening his hunting skills. She slowed her pace for his smaller form, but not by much. Motherhood had not curbed her passion for speed and mad flights across the open savannah.
"Something big hmm? Think you can help me take down a gazelle?" Her eyes roamed back over her sons form trying to decide if he was ready yet for something so large. Still the practice couldn't hurt and she would be there to ensure he didn't get hurt. After all a hoof to the head was just as dangerous sometimes as fang and claw.

Maalum only beamed at the thought of taking down something really big like a gazelle. It was an animal much larger than he was, after all. His mind was far from the concerns of safety and what might happen if he got himself in a sticky situation. All he could think about was how awesome hunting something like that would make him. Taking that thing down, even with his mother’s help, would win him total bragging rights with the rest of the family. Now how cool would that be?
“I bet I could take one down all on my own!” the growing cub boasted playfully, though his confidence did not reach quite far enough for him to say that with real certainty. Only in play, as he was still fairly aware of himself and his small size. There would have to be a great deal more growing before he could take an adult gazelle down on his own.
But maybe he could kill a baby one.

"Well lets see if we can find anything worthy of your magnificent skills, wouldn't want to waste your talent on anything easy or puny you know." She smiled down at her son with the indulgent gaze of most mothers, a gaze that told their children they would always be adored no matter what. She led Maalum out into the open grasslands the day was beautiful with all species gathered to bask in the sun.
"First you must crouch low while searching for a suitable meal...like this..." Slowly her body moved down her front and back legs stretched to lower her into the grass, her stomach barely brushed the earth as she stalked forward a few steps. With a grin she turned and waited for Maalum to follow her green eyes bright, but the rest of her lithe form blending into the softly swaying brown and gold grasses.

Maalum laughed eagerly, small claws gripping at the dirt with excitement. His mother always seemed to know exactly what it was he wanted to hear. “Exactly! My skills can’t be wasted! But you never hunt anything that’s a waste, so I don’t think we have to worry too much!” Yes, he was an ego-centric sonofagun, but that didn’t mean he was incapable of dishing out the praise as well.
Quite the contrary- it was one more thing he was just amazing at.
In his mind.
Following her, he soon grew quiet and tense, listening intently as she explained what needed to be done. Nodding slowly, he followed her example and started to move lowly against the ground, struggling not to step on all the little twigs and pebbles about his paws. He mimicked her, smiling. “What now?!” he asked in an excited whisper.

Kohana grinned proudly as she watched her son crouch low she moved to nuzzle his ear playfully before using a hushed tone. "Now use those keen stormy eyes, single out your prey...not one in the front of the herd, not too close to the middle either or it will be harder to cut it out."
She edged a bit closer to the unsuspecting group of gazelle and motioned Maalum to do the same. "You must let your body relax in preparation for the spring and run to come...too tense and you could hurt yourself." She smiled and slid around behind him urging him onward wanting to bolster his confidence.

Feeling her mother nuzzle him while he was so in the zone made him giggle and start, straightening a moment to look at her with a big goofy smile before he settled back into his crouched down position. He bit onto his tongue lightly, letting it hang from the side of his mouth as he tried to make himself stop giggling.
Listening keenly, he following his mother, making mental notes in an effort to remember every last word she told him about hunting. He had to be great at it. Just like with everything else.
Awesome.
He moved carefully, edging himself closer to the gazelle herd. His eyes were on a Gazelle a little on the outskirts of the group, but not so much so that it was completely isolated. “That one?” he whispered to his mother.

Kohana smiled and nodded, she knew she could cut the gazelle out easily and push it towards Maalum. She waited though wanting him to try for himself, after all what good were her lessons if she continued to do things for her sons. It was hard though, to hold herself back while her legs twitched eager for action.
"Just scare that one to the side..."
She whispered and waited ready to race after and help him with the take down. After all he was still young, growing, his speed was impressive. She felt a burst of pride to think that someday her sons would outrun her.

The little male was tickled with the thought of taking down a gazelle on his own- it didn’t even occur to him that she was going to be doing the bulk of the work. He was just eager to run. It felt so good to run- like he was flying over the ground and not even touching it. And he would only get faster! Like his mother.
He would be SO cool then.
Wiggling about on his paws, he couldn’t contain his eagerness any more- bursting forward towards the herd. He got fairly close before he was even noticed, the gazelle dashing about in surprise and fear. But he kept his eyes on the one he wanted. The gazelle he wanted sprang off to the side, trying to get away.

With patience born the moment her sons were the creamy cheetah held herself back. She let Maalum get a head start before racing around and keeping the one that ran to the side from escaping.
She glanced at her son and called out quickly. "Grab it's throat!"
with that she darted in and brought the small gazelle down by it's hind pinning the kicking creature while she waited for her son to try the killing blow. Her heart raced in her chest, not so much from the burst of speed she had put on but from the thought of any of the four hooves hitting her precious baby.

Maalum, more flailing paws than coordination at this point, raced over to where his mother had taken down the beast, surprised by how quickly she had managed it. To be that good at hunting! One day, it would be him leaping on a gazelle’s back bringing it down with his weight and power. He could just picture it! All the green glory just sweeping over the helpless animal and…
Oh.
She wanted him to do something. Attack? Right! He needed to kill it while she had it on the ground!
Charging with a new burst of power, the small cub sank his developing fangs into the neck of the animal, managing to avoid getting struck by any thrashing paws. He wasn’t sure his fangs were long enough to kill the animal, feeling it move around for quite some time. Still, blood was escaping from his mouth as it flowed from the beast, who settled after a moment. Silent.
Dead.

Kohana felt her heart slow as the gazelle stilled under her and her eyes traced over her sons form ensuring he was unharmed. Her eyes brightened and she moved to nuzzle Maalum lovingly. Her eyes shone with pride as she looked down at the small gazelle.
"You did it!" She stated happily, giving her son all the credit, it was important to her to make her children feel special and accomplished. She never wanted them to doubt themselves or feel lacking in any way. It had been so easy for her to feel that way as a youngster alone in the world and she never wanted that for her children.

“Yay! I did!” beamed the boy in return, licking his lips and giving his mother a happy nuzzle. He couldn’t have been prouder of himself, though it had taken a moment for him to respond to the kill. At first he had thought the animal was just pretending it was dead- like it would pop up at any moment and announce what a fool he had been for thinking his fangs were long enough to kill it.
But it stayed down and he knew he had pulled it off.
The others would be so jealous! “Hahaha! That was so much fun, mommy! I can’t wait until I’m fast like you!” Then he could do the whole thing on his own and really prove how amazing he was. “Are we going to take it back to the others?”

"Of course we have to take it back! Your father will be so proud!" She smiled and watched her sons display of enthusiasm. His comment on her speed made her muscles twitch and she grinned.
"You'll probably be even faster then me someday." Kohana loved speed, it was the only rival to her wanderlust. Of course she had to tamp down her roaming since she had her children to think of. Still the void was filled with the love she had for her family, and it was that love that always brought her back to them.
As she looked over Maalum and then at the dead gazelle she found herself silently wondering what she would do now that her boys seemed to be getting older...old enough to...leave.
