The dark grey female was much further from home then she normally ventured, her mood was slightly soured. After meeting another lioness and realizing that she was quite alone, not really alone for she had her siblings and parents. Still, she did seem to lack any social graces and she could be quite...difficult at times. In her seclusion and desire to grow up like her parents she had managed to isolate herself from any other company, it was a terrible feeling. She sighed and continued to wander uncertainly.
Finally her ruby eyes caught sight of something interesting, a not too far of plant growing in a perfect patch on a cliff edge. Hmmm, the opportunity to bring home a new specimen for her mother to teach about managed to lure her closer. She pawed gently at the base of the plant trying to gather it from the roots, the earth shifted a bit beneath her paws.
Before a sound could escape her the ground gave a sudden rumble and where her paws had once been surely placed now she leapt to escape the falling earth. She was fast, but gravity was faster, the ground was torn from under her leaving the half grown lioness dangling from her two front paws. She shook with the effort of trying to pull herself up and finally let out a cry.
"HELP! HALP! HELP!" She didn't care who responded, just as long as someone did. She didn't want to die alone a smear on the ground below, no life to mourn. With all her other siblings would her parents even realize their quiet introverted daughter was gone? She clenched her eyes shut her chest heaving as her back paws scrambled in an effort to touch the side of the cliff. If she could just get some leverage to push herself up!

Jeraha was on the hunt. His life as the quiet father was fine for the most part, but he missed the days where he could roam out as he pleased and kill whatever he felt had looked at him funny. Now his fights were limited to the most part to creatures who could be used as food, with the odd scuffle now and again with those that truly managed to piss him off. It wasn’t anything like the life he had been so used to. Alone. In complete control. A force to be reckoned with.
Now what was he? A loving father?
He wasn’t sure how he felt about it all. Having children was a blessing indeed, but was it worth the cost? The independence he had lost? Regardless of his conflictions, however, there was no going back now. The children were growing and he wouldn’t give them up for anything in the world. Not always one to show his affection- Jeraha did care a great deal about his babies. Even his p***k of a son Doto and the excessively annoying Kavu. They had their faults, but they were his sons and daughters.
Sighing, he sniffed around, hoping to catch scent of something he might be able to drag back to his family. Instead, however, he could smell the faint but familiar aroma of one of his own kin. Blinking, he followed the scent further from their home, heading towards the cliff his daughter had ventured to. As he neared, he heard her scream, his heart leaping into his throat instantly.
“Zana?!” He yelped, springing forward to get himself to the cliff side. Peering over the edge, he saw his daughter dangling for her life. He had only just managed to swallow his heart back down and now it felt ready to burst free from his chest thanks to the panic. “Hang on! I’ll get you,” he told her, moving carefully to the edge. The ground was unstable and crumbling under his weight, which meant he needed to be extremely careful unless he wanted to take a tumble down the cliff with his daughter. Slowly, he lowered his head, taking her by the scruff of her neck and lifting her. For such a massive lion, it was nothing to hold her up.

"Da-Daddy!" She had never been so happy to see her father as in that moment, her claws digging desperately into the unstable earth. For a moment she had wondered what would happen if she let go, if she relied on her own inner strength to climb her way up. The thought vanished when she saw her father peering down at her, salvation had arrived!
She closed her eyes tight and slowly relaxed as she felt her father pulling her up by her scruff. She felt like a tiny cub again, safe and protected in the strong large shadow of her parents. It was not a welcome sensation, but the thought of splattering on the ground below was an even less welcome imagining.
"The ground gave way..." She muttered weakly trying to explain, it was as if the ground had wanted to swallow her up, pull her down. Her heart still fluttered in fear and she berated herself for allowing such a sensation to continue when she was safe now.

Jeraha moved slowly, the unstable earth threatening further collapse with each move. He knew he had her, now it was just a matter of moving away from the cliff side before anything else could happen. So, with her in his jaws, he wasted no more time with sluggish, careful moves, turning and springing back towards more stable ground. Rocks shifted from the earth and fell from where he had been standing, but the crumbling of the edge was not quick enough to take him down with them. He landed a few feet away, walking a bit further still, just to be extra safe, before finally placing his daughter back on the ground.
Now he had to decide if he needed to be angry with her or just happy to see she was safe. He frowned sternly, looking down at her. Long black and green locks from his shaggy mane hung about his face, though not thickly enough to conceal his keen green eyes.
“You shouldn’t have been so close to the edge in the first place!” he told her, “what were you thinking? And alone! Do you have any idea how upset your mother and I would have been if something happened to you?” He sighed, sitting down in front of her and lowering his head, giving his daughter a nuzzle.

'Zana felt her body go into a limp puddle when her father finally set her back on the stable earth. She slowly lifted her ruby gaze to where the ground had crumbled away and lifted herself up trying to calm her jangled nerves. Her fathers voice was harsh and full of emotion, she looked up trying to appear unruffled her voice slightly shaky.
"I'm...I'm sorry daddy, I didn't realize..." She looked at the ground before she tore her eyes away from the crumbled cliff edge and peered back up. "I'm sorry..."
It stung having to apologize, especially for her own stupidity, why had she gotten so close to the edge? The plant...she had wanted to take the unique herb to her mother. She had wanted to be grown up, to do researching of her own, hunt for herself, rely on herself. Instead she had learned that she was still small and worse she was still reliant. A part of her wanted to tell her dad that she would never need saving again, and another part wanted to snuggle into him and make him promise he would always be there if she needed him.

Jeraha shook his head, looking down at his daughter. She seemed shaken by the whole thing, and he knew yelling at her wouldn’t really make her feel any better. Perhaps the whole thing had just been an accident. There were times he liked to go near the cliff’s edge and he was an adult. She couldn’t have known that the ground was unstable. He had never showed her the warning signs.
Maybe he needed to be more angry with himself and less upset with his daughter, but his heart still ached at the thought of losing her, beating what felt like a million times a minute.
“It’s alright,” he relented after a moment, “just…. Be more careful, alright? Your mother and I love you very much. I don’t know what I would do if something ever happened to you.” It was uncommon for him to let his children know how much he cared about them, but he knew this was one of those times where she probably needed to hear it. He didn’t want all his babies thinking he didn’t give a damn about any of them, even if he sometimes made it seem that way.
His emotional constipation was not their fault.

She could feel her chest heaving with emotion, her eyes prickled, yet no tears spilled she had placed up a dam against tears. Zana tried to calm herself, there was no reason to overreact now that she was safe. She saw her emotions like a weakness, a pitiful and childish display, she had to bottle them up if she ever wanted to grow up.
"I should have been more careful." she nodded in agreement with her father and glanced at the crumbled ledge. "I was trying to get a plant for mama..." She tensed for a moment looking angry. "If I were just a little bigger I would have been able to climb back up by myself." she turned her head away from the ground her mouth set in an angry line. Soon she would be big enough, nothing would stop her.

Jeraha smiled down at her little daughter. It was sweet that she had wanted to do something for her mother. In a completely reckless way, mind you, but still kind of sweet. It was probably the thoughtless kind of action Jeraha would take himself, though in a different regard. While she did things to try and help her mother, he would be more the kind to be reckless just for the sake of being reckless. To see where it would take him and what kind of a mess he would get himself into.
So, really, she was a bit better in the sense department than he had been when he was young. Then he probably was still.
“I wouldn’t worry too much about that,” he replied calmly, his usual monotone slipping back into his voice now that his fear had subsided, “you’re growing everyday. I’m sure you’ll be able to do all kinds of new things very soon.”

'Zana moved to rub against her fathers legs and looked up at him her red eyes blazing. "Daddy, I'll save you too someday." She gave a firm nod certain that she would have a chance to help her father someday. His words were comforting though, she was growing and he was right soon she would be doing everything for herself.
She sat down and tried to calm herself, blood still rushed wild in her veins after all the excitement. "Did you ever need help? When you were small?" It was hard for her to imagine her father ever being small, let alone helpless.

Jeraha chuckled lowly. “Save me? Now that would be special.” He wondered if something like that would ever happen. Though a family man, he still thought himself quite capable of holding his own. The kind who would never need to be saved. Still, he didn’t want to dash her hopes, so he said nothing.
At her question, he found himself frowning.
“When I was just a little bit older than you are now,” he said lowly, “I was already living on my own. I had to grow up very fast, and it was unfortunate. I had to learn the hard way how to take care of myself. Any mess I got into, I had to find a way out of myself. So… I guess no, I never needed help. But that doesn’t mean I hadn’t wanted it.”

Zana felt her heart soar at her fathers words, he had been on his own, he had managed just fine...soon she would be just as self sufficient. Still he made it sound, sad? Alone...maybe that wouldn't be such fun after a while, still being able to take care of herself would be worth a little loneliness wouldn't it?
"What about your brothers and sisters? Your mom and dad?" She looked at her father curiously wondering why he had been alone. She knew she would always have her family there...and yet maybe she didn't appreciate them as much as she ought to.

Jeraha frowned. He wasn’t entirely sure his daughter was old enough to hear about his family. The things he had been made to suffer. But… she was his daughter. And a strong creature. She didn’t really deserve to be left in the dark just because there were evil things out in the world that she had yet to experience. Everyone had to grow eventually.
But maybe she’d grown enough for one day- she had nearly fallen to her death, after all. No. He’d best be honest with her. It was something her mother would have wanted.
“Well, my father was a wicked creature,” he said faintly, “he killed my mother, and my brothers and sisters. He would have killed me too, had I not run away from him before he had the chance to. For a long time I hid, worried that he would find me.”

"Your not worried now Daddy? That he could still find you?" And a part of her wondered, what if he did? As much as she wanted independence she didn't ever want anything to happen to her family. It felt as if two voices were arguing in her mind one asking her why it mattered if she were going to be alone anyway The other feeling strangely protective of her father and mother and siblings. Just because she wanted to go out into the world alone didn't mean she didn't want her family out in the world alive and happy.
"Do you miss your mother and siblings?" Zana asked curiously her voice creaking slightly this time. A part of her wanted to ask 'Will you miss me if I go, and will I miss you?' Yet she wouldn't ask such a thing, she still had lots of time to choose to strike out on her own, and she could always come back.

“No,” Jeraha replied, “even if he did find me, he’d be much too old now to pose a threat to me, or to any of you. Besides,” he offered her a somewhat wicked grin, “your dad’s no push over anymore- I’d send him running before he could raise a paw.” He would, too. He’d kill the demon of a lion before he could hurt any of his family. There was no way he’d allow something like that to happen.
Little d**k wasn’t getting near them.
Sighing softly, he nodded. “Every day,” he replied in all honesty, “but it’s alright to miss them- it keeps their memory alive in my heart. And now I have new family to make me feel complete again.”

Zana nodded softly and a small smile crossed her features, she knew how tough her father could be a pushover he was not. Someday she would find that strength inside of herself wouldn't she? Once she was bigger, stronger, faster. Would she still feel small inside or would she grow within as well? It was all so confusing, perhaps she was pushing herself too fast and too hard. For now what mattered was learning what her parents could teach her for the day she left them those lessons would be all she had.
Her fathers answer wiped the smile away slowly, if he missed his family everyday how would she ever have the strength to leave hers of her own volition? "No matter how far apart we ever get daddy, you'll always be in my heart." She moved to nuzzle her father calmer now but a new type of fear growing inside her. Not a fear of being unable to hunt or of falling from a great height, but the fear that she might never have the courage to walk away from the family she loved.
