The pride could not survive with just her. That was the thought that plagued Moto every day now. Especially at sunset and sunrise. She watched the sunrise now, troubled frown on her usually calm face as she watched the eastern horizon from beneath her favorite tree. The world needed the sun and moon together. So did her pride...but right now, they had only the moon. They only had her.
And it hurt. It hurt a great deal for Moto, knowing she was alone. She had her children, she had her pride...but she had no mate. Serithi was gone.

It hadn't been that long since Enzi's father had disappeared. The adolescent was still pretty shaken about it. He didn't know whether to treat his father as dead, or just missing. And if he was missing, where was he? It was complicated. But he tried not to show it. He had to be strong, just like his father had taught him to be. Now was no time to show weakness. Now was a time for strength and support, especially towards his mother. He knew she must be suffering. But he knew his mother to be selfless. She must've been worrying about more than herself and more than Enzi's father. The night before, Enzi had vowed to go to hi smother in the morning and offer himself to do whatever it was she needed. His adulthood was approaching quickly, and he would have to be responsible for much soon. Even more so now that his father was...gone, and his mother was the sole leader of the Mwako'bi'giza.
Eyes downcast to avoid the bright sun, the leopon trekked along the grasses as he searched for his mother. It wasn't long before he saw her, golden form shining brighter with the sunlight. Enzi squinted and smiled, picking up his pace to get to her faster.
"Hey, Mom." he greeted. It sounded simple, but Enzi filled that one phrase with every emotion and thought he was feeling, and he hoped his mother felt it.

Moto startled a bit, knowing it was one of the pride. Only they could sneak up on her. She blinked at the gray form of her youngest son...and gave him a smile that wasn't entirely forced. She was always happy to see her cubs, no matter how grown up they were.
"Hello Enzi. What troubles you?" She'd heard he emotion in his voice. After all...she was his mother. The thoughts...now those were another story. Moto wasn't a mind reader after all.

Enzi smiled back at his mother, glancing his eyes away bashfully. He sat beside the lioness and sighed quietly. He remained silent for a moment, squinting at the sun in his eyes. He didn't know what to say; where to begin. He knew his mother must've shared many of his same thoughts. But he didn't want to spill all his troubles right away. That would make her even more worried than she already was. And Enzi didn't want that. He knew his mother had enough worries and troubles of her own.
"Just..." Enzi began, face growing stern. He looked to his mother, then away again. "Are you...Okay?" he asked.

Moto sighed and shook her head. "I am not, Enzi. But I must seem that way, for the pride. Until I figure out what to do...I must be the light for this pride, more than ever, since...since your father is gone." She would not cry. Not again. She gave her youngest a sad smile.
"Thank you, though...for asking. As long as I have you and your siblings, I can stand strong."

((Feel free to kick me for taking so long to tag.))
The gray leopon moved closer to his mother, offering her a clumsy nuzzle as he always used to do when he was younger. He felt her pain, because he shared it. His father was gone, and he didn't know why or where. Part of him wanted to blame the demon pride, while the other part was just confused But confusion had to get put aside, at least for right then. The pride was more important. His mother's well-being was more important. And it was time for the Mwako to get on its feet again. They had to become stronger.
"I know you can," Enzi answered. "...but not as strong as before." he added quietly, violet eyes flicking up to the sky. The sun was rising higher.
The sun...
"Mom..." Enzi started, tail coiling around his front paws. He was nervous to say what he was about to, but he knew it had to be said. It was for the pride. It was for his family. And his father. It was his fate.
"...Wasn't it...Dad's wish that I...Follow in his pawsteps?"

The lioness looked at her son startled. She...she hadn't thought of that. In her attempts to stay together in front of the pride, she hadn't remembered that. She felt a little guilty for it...but her son had a point.
"It was. The last-born son of a last-born son..." She chuckled. "Well...it seems you have solved one problem in my mind, Enzi." She took a deep breath and nuzzled the leopon. "You are a brave boy for reminding me of that. And so...Enzi, as Mwezi of this pride, I ask you this. Is it your wish to take on the mantle of Jua once you are of age?"

Enzi swallowed, meeting his mother's nuzzle and giving the grass a worried look, shielding his eyes from his mother's.
He was nervous.
He had trained long and hard with his bonded, Nesibindi. She had helped him grow stronger physically, as well as mentally. So had his big sister, and especially his father. Age had helped, too. And his family; the whole pride. He wasn't as skittish as he used to be, but parts of him were still weak. But he could no longer be weak. He could no longer jump at the sound of a sneeze, or someone accidentally sneaking up on him. Instead, he had to become so strong that he anticipated the sound of a sneeze, and make it impossible for someone to sneak up on him, accidentally or no.
He was almost there...Almost like his father.
His mother's question weighed heavily on his mind. The answer was already roused in his mind, but to say it was much more different than to think it. To say it would seal his destiny. To say it would change his whole life. He would never be the same.
Gray fur bristling in the morning breeze, the leopon turned his head to the sky once more, taking in the scents of his homeland. Then he turned his head to face his mother, determination and strength in his eyes.
"Yes." he answered.

Moto hadn't realized, until now, just how strong Enzi really was. He was still weak in some areas...but not where it counted. He was strong of heart...his agreeance to thise proved it. Because the path the pride walked was full of darkness, and until she steped down...she and he would be the guiding lights for the pride. That he was willing to lead, and did not say so right away, proved he would be ready...with a little guidance.
She reared up a bit so she could lick the top of his head, growing mane and all, like she had when he was young. "Then with my blessing, you shall begin to learn how to shine, Chache'jua. Since the Jua is not here to teach you, I shall. With a little help, of course." Moto smiled at her son, for once the expression free of hurt or sadness. "You make me prouder of you every day, Enzi."

Weights and burdens were being lifted off of Enzi's grown shoulders with each of his mother's words. The pride would be complete soon. They would get back on their feet. It wouldn't be hard at all, especially since his mother would be with him the whole way as he trained to become the Jua.
His chest swelled at his mother's words, and he smiled, ears shifting back.
"Same to you, Mom."
