"I apologize for this." There should have been no need for apology. They were situated in a nice, if small, two-story house towards the center of the Village. It was comfortably furnished, and located only a block or two away from the busy marketplace. Both were given free reign of the town, and though both were expected to pick up some kind of job before long, for now, their time was completely their own. Klu'chud, at least, was very comfortable with the situation.
Gus, he knew, was not. "I know you had not planned to stay for long." The Daewl spoke distractedly from his perch on the sofa, where he was diligently attempting to repatch one of his boots that had split from the wear of snow on the leather. With only a pair to his name for the moment, he didn't want to leave them with a cobbler for a day. And though, certainly, there were easier means of repairing it, the Daewl liked a bit of a challenge from time to time. "They will let you leave soon enough, I am sure."

Gus was standing on the other side of the room, looking through a window... or rather he was looking in the window, at his own reflection. As he stared, he ran the rough material of the shirt through his fingers. It was a pretty normal combo here in the village, simple white shirt with a dark vest, belted over well tailored pants... It probably looked fine, although to him it seemed strange. Satou was the one that had always wanted to be a villager... not Gus. Gus was the guy who sat in front of the tv trying to figure out how to make the laptop work without crashing it.
"It's alright." As the words came out of his mouth, he was amazed at how honest they sounded... and that made him think. If it sounded honest, then it probably was. And really there was nothing wrong with staying in the village for a little while... "I could use some adventure. Can't write books without having experienced life." He grinned over at Spawn once before returning his gaze to the window glass.
Truley the only thing on him that was completely him, was the pair of ratty old green tennis shoes on his feet. He smiled.... those were awesome shoes.

"Adventure." He chuckled softly, but it was short-lived, for the patch quickly distracted him once more. Frowning with concentration, he carefully arranged in the finely trimmed gap, but seemed less than pleased by the resulting appearance. Shoddy, shoddy and second-hand. Not at all suitable. "Yes, this is thrilling, is it not? Sitting in a comfortable, warm living room while winter wastes away. I suppose our guards make it an adventure, watching our every steps."
Growing impatient, he carefully traced the gap between the two leather pieces, the two sealing seamlessly together behind his touch. "You are at the window. Do you see them outside?"

He leaned forward and moved the drape covering the corner of the glass. As he changed his perspective from within the glass to the street outside, all he saw was a person or two strolling down the path. He shrugged. "Not really, just normal villagers." Then he dropped the curtain and walked over, flopping down in a chair.
"And you should be less pessimistic." He picked at the frayed material on the arm of his chair as he regarded Spawn across from him. "It's not like they have anything against us. They're just going by village rules or something like that. They don't actually suspect that we're gonna do anything to hurt anyone." A piece of the chair came away in his fingers and he sighed. "They just don't know us, that's all."

"You should be less naive," he responded curtly, glancing up towards Gus over his boot. However, the seamless boot was much more presentable than the patch job it had previously been, and overall Spawn seemed pleased. Sitting back, he pulled the boot experimentally onto a bare feet, testing the fit before he deemed the project complete. "But then, you have contacts here. How is your sister?"
It was civil enough conversation. Odd conversation perhaps, for Spawn, but civil. He would blame it on the boots.

Gus just shrugged at the 'naive' comment and leaned back into the chair, wishing for a Tv. He brightened up slightly at the mention of Satou.
"She's doing good actually, and it makes me glad to see her this way." He sat up slightly and started to pick at the chair absently once more. "You should have seen her when we were kids... she was always so angry, so resentful. It's almost like seeing a whole new sister, but at the same time? It's still her." Then, almost as if it was an afterthough even though it was no such thing. "She's also pregnant, so she's about as happy as it gets."
He'd always figured that he'd do all the domestic things before Satou would... that he'd get married and be in love and have kids... "I know Keppit will want to hear all about it when I get back."

"Pregnancy. How nice for her." He sounded utterly uninterested, but he had listened and commented, and that was good enough, wasn't it? Klu'chud stood, stomping once to test his boot, and, satisfied, walked a quick lap of the little living room. "Keppit is...your mother, you have said? I am sure they will allow you to return to her shortly. I do not know why you would want to."
Frowning, now with confusion and some mild curiosity, he turned to face Gus and folded his arms. "But they will let you leave. Why would you want to leave your kind? Your sister is certainly happy here."

Gus looked pensive for a moment... Why did he want to get back to Keppit? "I dunno... It's not really that I want to get back to her, I mean, she's a nice person and all... a really nice person..." He did like Keppit, and she was the mother that he remembered, but he wasn't all that eager to get back to her house... "I guess what I want more is to set up on my own, maybe get a job and such, maybe find a girlfriend." He waved his hand at the cabin around them both. "and it's not like this isn't nice, it's just.... not what I'm all about?" It was more of a question than a statement. Gus really and truly didn't know how to explain why he didn't fit into the village. He just didn't.

Spawn seemed utterly unconvinced, but likewise was not about to pry further. Gus truly was a prime example of his rank, Klu'chud quickly decided. A house, a job, a girlfriend--how sentimental. But all of that was available here, and, certainly, a better chance for it all, among those of his own kind. Klu'chud was genuinely intrigued about what of the land outside the forest would captivate Gus so that he would leave the situation perfectly laid out for him. He would have to venture from the forest once his work in the Village was complete.
"As you say," he allowed dryly. "Perhaps I shall add those goals to my list to accomplish," Klu'chud continued more cheerfully and, satisfied with his boot, returned to his seat on the couch. "They would certainly help me to....acclimate."

Gus laughed. "I'm not the best person to give you advice there... I seem to scare away every girl I come aross." He shrugged once again, this time with less effort, as if the act of shrugging away his love life was well practiced. "And besides, you could do worse for yourself than a loving family... someone to come home to, to love you..."
Suddenly he needed a subject change. "So tell me, what happens in cabins in the woods that can be entertaining..."

"I have had a loving family," Klu'chud replied dryly, not at all impressed. Then, as an afterthought, he murmured, "I wonder if they survived the blast." For a long moment he considered the wall, as if it held the answer to his halfhearted question, then came to the conclusion that he couldn't have cared less and turned his attention back to Gus.
He frowned, considering the question. "Very little. We were not often indoors. There are books, there are discussions. My father and I would play chess. I would practice." He chuckled softly. "Practice can be exceptionally entertaining."

Gus raised his eyebrow at the murmuring, only catching part of what had been said. He'd heard rumors of Zelda and Scion's cabin from his sister, but being Gus, he wasn't completely able to to put two and two together... perhaps it was just in his nature to trust others... just in his nature to be mentally hurt... and maybe even blown up physically someday, who knew.
"I suck at chess." It was the complete truth. "So if you're lookin for a game that you can always win, chess is it." He laughed at that. "Used to play chess with my older brother, he was almost as bad as I was... Is almost as bad as I am." He leaned back again obviously slightly restless and a little bored. "Books are good, walks are good, social calls are good." Raising from the chair he returned to the window and peered out almost like they did in the movies. "you think whoever's watching us will tell me where the library is?"

"There is a library in the Vhaid's home," he offered, raising a brow. But, he quickly climbed to his feet, and, glad for a reason to leave the little building, hurried to the door. Opening it, he stepped out onto the small front porch and, after a cursory glance around, located an Uuthli weeding a garden across the roadway. He called out, "Are you the one set to guard us?"
The Uuthli looked up from his work, apparently confused by the unusual summons, and tossed the weeds in his hands into a nearby basket before replying. "Actually, I'm not on duty until tomorrow."

Gus followed his younger 'lookalike' out the door and into the yard. He too was just glad to get out of the small cabin and into the fresh air. When Spawn had addressed the Uuthli across the road, it occured to Gus that gardening was both a stupid and thoughtful disguise for a guard.... if he even was at that. While Gus didn't have any delusions that they were being watched over, he wasn't all that sure that a Uuthli pulling weeds was a necessary cover.
"Klu'chud, why would he be pulling weeds if he was supposed to be watching us? Wouldn't he be sitting in a tree, or even better, in a chair by the door like the gangsters do in the movies... maybe even reading a newspaper." Now he was just enjoying himself. When the normal entertainment left, it was time to make up your own. "He's weeding his garden for goodness sake." And then while he was pointing at the man to illustrate his point, it occured to him that the Uuthli had said that he wasn't on duty until tomorrow... "So wait... you are supposed to watch us, but you're not working now..." He grinned at the man. "Will you be weeding tomorrow? Just out of curiosity, of course."

Klu'chud debated mentioning that he was unfamiliar with movies, or with the gangsters in them, but decided now was perhaps not the best of circumstances for it. He led the way down the steps from the porch even as the Uuthli called back across the road to Gus.
"Not if I get the weeding done today." Wiping sweat from his brow, he approached the pair to lean an arm against the fence surrounding his little piece of property. "Problems?"
