This was a rare moment for Talion. He was alone.
Normally the stallion would have been surrounded by friends and family, striving to be the center of attention, laughing, exploring, playing. He had done all of this and more, ever since he could walk on his four hooves. He thrived on the social life he possessed; it was now as much a part of him as his very own violet eyes.
Today was different. Even the most social of Soquili needed some alone time, away from invasive older sisters, disapproving parents, and otherwise extraneous noise. Indeed, the quiet in the empty meadow was most pleasing. One thing remained the same, though, and that was the semblance of a smile that marked his dark face. For Talion, a frown was even rarer than the days he wanted some peace and quiet. Life was just too short to keep track of the wrongs committed against him, and so he took every day in stride, smiles not far from reach.
Even so, he wouldn't have minded one companion on this beautiful day—the deep blue of the sky and the crisp grass crunching under his hooves as he stamped at them happily were more than enough to share.

Nereid was... alone. But unlike the other, she was always alone. Or that is, never in the company of another. The company of others could be painfully overpowering on her senses and result in a deviation from her true personality. She was an empath. Not in any supernatural sense that is above being explained. But she so easily picked up on the emotions of others through body language and copied so habitually that she was, in most encounters, less herself. The closer she placed herself to another, the stronger the uncanny urge to replicate their feelings in her own actions and words.
So, her empathic nature led her astray from the normal herds or even traveling rogues that banded together for company or just protection for a short period of time. Not that she didn't stay to them on occasion. But sometimes her nature repulsed those who originally accepted her company.
There was no destination in mind so she just wandered in good nature, pleased on a whole with all that passed. It was rare that she felt her own feelings, the way the sun felt on her own back and the way grass felt in her own mouth and stomach. It was this elation that led her to the meadow she was now in, oblivious to the fact that she drew ever closer to a stallion now quite visible.

It hadn't taken very long for the stallion's wish to be granted. Only a few moments had passed before Talion's ears picked up the sound of grass crunching underfoot—that is, footsteps that weren't his alone. Expecting one of his long-time friends to be just around the corner, he turned around with a bright smile adorning his face.
However, the mare he saw wasn't someone he knew at all. This was an odd thing since, due to his sociable nature, he knew almost every Soquili in the general area. Dark eyebrows lifted in mild surprise as he paused to regard the other Soquili. She seemed to be at peace, content with herself, especially as she hadn't seemed to notice him. It was then that he took in the pale shades of her coat—so unlike his own. Really, he had only ever been around those with darker coloring, as every member of his family boasted a gleaming, inky coat. For him to come into contact with another like this mare was rather uncommon. She was quite... beautiful. This didn't change his outlook, though—he was always open to making new friends.
"Hey, I... didn't see you there," he called as she approached. Then, as an afterthought, "What brings a lovely mare like you here this fine day?"
No ill intent was meant by these words; the subdued smile he bore said as much.

As the distance closed in, she could no longer remain oblivious to his presence and looked up at him just before he spoke as though she knew it were coming. She stopped and took a step back, afraid of what feelings might come over her. There was a sense of relief when she got nothing.
She pondered an answer to his question. Similarly to the way her empathy worked, she looked for an answer that would sound pleasing. But the truth was the only one that came fast enough. It had the sound of a pathetic lie rather than the truth. "Nothing spectacular. Just found myself here." Not 'I'm following my destiny' or 'I live nearby and just went for a walk'. "I hope that's... alright?"

Talion tilted his enormous head as he listened intently to the mare speak. Somehow, it seemed to him that she was a bit nervous, fumbling for her words. He supposed that it was natural to feel that way—he had probably interrupted her while she was deep in thought or somesuch thing. He smiled slowly, in an effort to assuage the discomfort she might have felt at the moment. He honestly hadn't been trying to shake her off; he was just a friendly Soquili, and this wasn't really his territory to claim.
"Oh, there's no problem at all!" the soquili replied quickly, stamping at the ground the way an excitable colt might, "I was just surprised to find someone else here. It's usually a pretty quiet place."
He paused to look at her again, as if to gauge a reaction. It was important that he didn't scare others off when he was trying to befriend them... especially since this particular mare was quite pretty. Beautiful friends were always nice to have, right? "By the way, my name's Talion. It's nice to meet you."
