As soon as the weather was warm enough, the kids started to clamor to go outside. That put Bernard in a difficult situation. Bigger though they were, Zwei and Teyr were nowhere near ready to go out alone. But he still didn't trust Ennea to be alone with just them, not after what happened before. So a bit reluctantly, he'd packed a store-bought picnic lunch and an old sheet into a basket, and set out with the family in tow.
Luckily, they had found a nice grassy spot near a small playground. Bernard sat sipping a plastic cup of apple cider and watched as Ennea ran back and forth, pushing Zwei and Teyr on the swings. So far, everything seemed to be going well.

Vinny had been stuck with his uncle for the afternoon. Not that he minded, he liked his uncle. Vate usually taught him a magic trick, or how to play a song on his zitar. Not today. Josh wasn't with them today, either. The older boy was helping his mother deal with some family issues. Most importantly, her younger brother. The toddler needed to be kept busy and out of the way.
Vincent himself seemed to frighten the toddler. He didn't know why. It did nothing to improve his ego-- he hadn't intended to scare Davi. Oh well-- Davi hadn't seemed to like Vate either, so the two were sent out of the house until things could be settled.
"Going to teach me another trick, Uncle Vate?" Vinny asked, looking up at the silver haired elf. Vate shook his head.
"I was thinking... a trip to the park?" He suggested with a shrug. "It's warm enough." So it was decided- the two headed for the park in Barton. Vate sat at the bench near the playground while Vincent headed towards the slide.

Eventually, Ennea's strength gave out. "Play something else?" she suggested, trying to catch her breath. While she wanted to keep it up, she was also more than ready to rest with Bernard and a cup of cider.
"Okay!" Teyr agreed, sailing off the swing as it swept forward. He flew forward, landing in a crouch a few feet away. "Slide, Zwei?"
Zwei couldn't do that without ending up in a heap on the pavement, so he just slipped off the swing and slithered towards the slide. "Race you!" he announced, picking up the pace- and nearly bowling over another kid en route to the slide.
Screeching to a halt, Teyr quickly knelt to make sure both parties were okay. "Sorry!" he said quickly, even though he hadn't done anything. "Sorry sorry sorry! You okay?"

Vinny blinked in surprise as he was almost knocked over; and more surprise when he saw the kid who'd almost commited the crime. He reminded the boy of a snake. Cool! He'd never seen someone quite like him.
"I'm okay," Vinny said with a smile, looking at Teyr. "I'm Vincent-- but you can call me Vinny if you like."

Zwei brushed himself off and looked at the other boy. "Sorry," he conceded. "Didn't see you." Then he glared at Teyr. Why was he apologizing again?
Just relieved that the other boy was okay, Teyr let out a sigh of relief. "Good!" Then he held out his hand. "Teyr! Nice to meet you!"
It seemed silly for them both to hold out their hands, so Zwei just held his behind his back. "Zwei. Nice to meet you. Want to slide?"

Vinny nodded at Zwei. "It's okay," He said. "It happens all the time." Okay, a lie. He didn't want Zwei to feel bad for bumping into him, though. Not when he was so cool looking.
Vinny took Teyr's hand and shook it. He thought this was a rather grown-up greeting, and felt somewhat awkward doing it. "Nice to meet you too." He said. He nodded and smiled at Zwei. "Sure!" He said. "Race you!"

It was as if Vincent said a magic word. "Gonna win!" Zwei shot back, darting for the slide again. At least this time he had a clear shot, and he wasn't going to let anybody get in his way.
Teyr followed somewhat awkwardly, running but not really aiming to get in front. He would feel weird if he won; Zwei was much better at races, and it looked like Vinny was too. Besides, they would all get a turn in the end.

Turns out, Vinny was too modest to allow himself to win. He let Zwei pass him without a fight. He slowed down and ran along side Teyr. "Want to slide together?" He asked.
Of course, it was okay if Teyr didn't want to. Vinny wouldn't mind. "Is Zwei your older brother?" He asked, with a tilt of his head. "I have a brother too-- his name's Josh."

With Zwei going at full speed, and the others not even putting up a fight, it was pretty easy to win. He practically threw himself at the slide. "Win!" he shouted, turning around jubilantly. But when he saw Teyr and Vinny, he froze. Were they even trying to win?
Grinning, Teyr nodded. "Okay." Sliding would be more fun with friends, right? Then, at the next question, he nodded again. "Your brother here?" he asked, looking around. Maybe the brother was hiding somewhere.

Vinny shook his head. "He's spending the day with mom." He told Teyr. "He usually comes with me though." The boy gave a shrug before looking at Zwei. "Want to play another game?" He asked, with a tilt of his head. Maybe Zwei knew some games he didn't.
That was, after he and Teyr got a chance to go on the slide.

Teyr nodded, but he was just a little confused. He couldn't remember being apart from Zwei; from the time he came home, they went everywhere together. But maybe this family was different, especially if Vinny wasn't there with his mom.
The thought of a game (after the slide, at least) was promising. "Yes!"
But it seemed that they might have to wait a bit to get that turn on the slide. Zwei was most displeased to come face to face with another ladder. Practically hissing, he grabbed onto a high rung with his hands and managed to pull his tail up onto a lower one.
While he worked, he spared enough attention to make a suggestion. "Sparkle Rangers?" That was a game he could get into. They even had some toys tucked into the picnic basket.

Vinny felt like telling Teyr that this was one of the only times he'd ever been away from his brother. He didn't like it. It made him feel... alone. Not so much when he was making friends, but still. "Want to slide now?" He asked, sitting on one side of the slide.
"But what's sparkle rangers?" He asked, with a tilt of his head. He'd never heard of it before. He and his brother usually played tag, or pretend. Or even pirates.

If Vinny had said that, Teyr would have told him that he'd surely feel the same way if he was ever away from Zwei. Instead, he just cocked his head. "Hafta wait," he said. It took Zwei a while to climb things. But Teyr was used to being patient. "Soon?"
It took another minute or so, but Zwei finally managed to get to the top of the slide, and was thoroughly exhausted. The taller slides were much more fun, but also much more work!
While he caught his breath, he looked down the slide at Vinny. "Sparkle Rangers!" he repeated, stunned that anyone hadn't heard of them. "Superheros, saving the world!" Really, what could be better than that?

Vinny decided to take his turn on the slide before asking another question. He wasn't patient-- though he was humble. "I've never heard of them." He said, looking at Zwei as he slid down. "Josh and I always play Batman and Robin, or Superman." He knew a couple other super heros too, like Spiderman.
He would have liked to point out that his older brother liked fantasy things, and that was what Vinny was used to. Playing dragons, knights, princes, Jedi. He was used to that.

And now it was Zwei's turn to be confused. "There's more superheroes?" he asked, stunned. He'd only ever seen the Sparkle Rangers on the TV box, and Bernard had only gotten Sparkle Rangers merchandise because of that. Zwei had never even considered there would be other heroes, but now that he thought about it, it made so much sense!
As he considered it, he slid down the slide, barely even noticing the rush as thoughts of heroes danced in his mind.
Teyr was similarly surprised, but not terribly concerned about it. Instead, he gestured towards the slide, which was now unoccupied. "You first," he insisted, and followed up with a question. "Other heroes fun?"
