There was a certain electric crackle running through Writ as he hopped off the marble steps of one of Upper's many high-class apartments. Last night he was going through the Scene, scraping and scamming up all the money he could find, when he found a big fish who looked like she had some money to burn: a skinny blond chick that wore so much jewelry that she was practically made of gold.

She seemed a little drunk and a little stupid. So he put on the charm and the sparkles, and soon they were both in bed doing the no-pants dance. Then morning came, and his hands were deep into her jewelery boxes.

The stealing was the actual job, the sex was for the "Job satisfaction" Though there was something a tad odd about the whole thing. Sex felt a lot more than good. It felt, well, powerful. An orgasm to Writ felt like being injected with espresso. Like he could leap out of bed and climb a mountain. He'd usually take the more popular option and have another go at it. In the end, she'd be worn out before he was. Normal men, so he heard, would just turn over and sleep.

But then, he wasn't exactly normal, was he?

It didn't worry him too much. Coyote did this kind of s**t all the time. The godly life was a good life.

He was striding down the streets, humming happily to himself.

Fish didn't usually come to Uppers because there were a lot of government people. He couldn't pass his oddities off as easily as he could in the Scene, or vanish into the Crowd like in Middling. But money could pretty assuredly draw him out of his hiding places, and someone needed him to wash windows.

Not that Fish had ever washed windows before, but he had some theories.

The streets in Uppers were cleaner than he was used to, with none of the usual hostile energy. Still, he had to be careful. Suits roamed here.

He wasn't sure what to do about his alliance issue. He hadn't been able to get hold of Ciro since he'd grown, so he didn't know what the other boy was up to. Keeya seemed promising enough, but the sooner he got his ties with Quinn absolved the better. And then there was the issue of Writ. Fish knew that it couldn't last, even if they had been friends all this time. Writ was an opponent. Writ was an enemy.

He'd have to tell him soon.

Writ was strolling through the streets in his post-orgasm state, not really caring that he was neck deep in Blacksuit territory. He could be in a cave full of bears, it wouldn't have made any difference. If he could take on a bear god head on, he could definitely take on a bunch of guys in suits. There was something about sex that made Writ a bit cocky. The unusual feeling of power might have had something to do with it.

He passed by a window, and there was something about the washer in front of it made him do a double take. Writ looked at the reflection of the water-drenched window and tilted his head, there was something about this guy that felt familiar. Writ walked closer to the man, and looked down on his neck, The gills gave it away.

"Fish?" He raised an eyebrow, "Holy s**t, word got around quick."

Fish looked at the reflection in the window of the man next to him. Speaking of the devil... He nodded. "Hey, Writ," he said.

He kept washing the window - he had a job to do - but shrugged one shoulder. "You sort of told me yourself," he said. "What were you expecting, that I was just going to let you enjoy your lead?"

"I was talking about Coyote, his fault we grew the first time around, and now he's bragging all about how he did it. Again." Writ shook his head, "It's been what, two years since this whole mess started? This Game is crazy."

Writ walked in front of Fish to get a better look at him, "So what did he have you do? Did he try to kill you too?"

Fish tried to focus on his window washing rather than the fact that he was now being examined like some exotic specimen, but it was sort of hard when Writ was standing between him and the window. He sidestepped the other man and gave his own reflection a long stare, not really sure he wanted to answer.

"Oh, um," he said, stalling. His face flushed bright red. "No. But I sort of wish he had. It might have been preferable."

"Oh, come on, it couldn't have been that bad." Writ tilted his head in Fish's direction, blocking his view of the window, "What's up? You're turning all red."

He wasn't getting a straight answer, so he did what any good friend would do, guess. "Did he try to set you on fire? Wait, no, that isn't like him... Hmm, did he try to drown you?" Two totally ridiculous guesses and still no response.

Writ forgot that he hadn't told Fish how he grew himself. Probably a good thing to get out of the way if he wanted to find out what happened, "If it'll make you talk, I was starved out in a dessert and forced to fight a bear."

Fish rolled his eyes. "Well," he said, kicking his mind to ACT NORMALLY, "He did try to drown me. Briefly. But I think that was more a test than trying to kill me. I don't know about your god, but mine's not like that."

"Really," he said, "It was pretty bad. I don't think you want to know."

But Writ kept bugging him about it.

"Okay, basically?" asked Fish, "He sent me to his realms and had me raped by a nymphomaniac altar boy."

He turned quickly back to his window washing. Somehow when you said it out loud, it sounded so much worse than it had actually been. His ears were bright red with embarrassment.

"Sorry you asked?"

"Like, rape in the metaphorical sense? Or rape like" Writ made a subtle thrust, "You know....."

It took a moment for Writ to figure out what "Nymphomaniac" meant. Then there was a mix of grimace and open-mouthed shocked on Writ's face. His brain just couldn't decide how exactly his face should react to Fish's predicament.

"Um... I'm sorry?" Was the only response he could come up with. You would've thought someone just died.

Coyote was laughing hysterically, Oh, that's rich! Why didn't I think of that? Would've been better for you to die of embarrassment then let that big oaf do the job. Look how red he is, his head looks like it's gonna pop!

"Raped like you know," said Fish flatly. "I honestly should have expected it. He's Greek, after all. Doesn't make it any less embarrassing. A bear sounds like a vacation after that."

He shrugged. The bruises and scrapes had mostly healed by now. It was easier to push it to the back of his mind now that it didn't hurt to sit down. But then he remembered what he had been thinking about before Writ had shown up.

His facial expression changed abruptly, from sheepish to serious. "We can't keep doing this, Writ," he said.

It seemed that near-death experience was not a requirement for growing up. He only wished Coyote knew that... Wait. Writ shuddered, That would only make matters worse. Coyote, having choices on how he should torment his godling? No thanks.

"Eh?" Writ was totally unprepared for the change of subject, "Do what?" He scratched his head. His imagination wasn't helping either. The image of Fish getting raped (literately) would forever be etched in his mind.

Fish sighed through his gills. This was about to get complicated. How should he put this? "We..."

He trailed off and started over. "We can't be friends any more, Writ."

He cringed inwardly. He'd meant for it to be more apologetic. "We're on different sides. I'm sorry. It's been a lot of fun and it means a lot to me, but..."

He trailed off again, deliberating.

"I've got an alliance to keep and a game to play."

"Oh." Writ's ears drooped. There was a said realization in his voice. All in all he knew that it wouldn't last. Guess it took Fish some growing in order to have the initiative to end it. Of course, Writ wasn't going to let go that easily. Fish and him have been friends at the beginning. But then, it seemed like Fish was set on his decision. Writ didn't know what to do, he's never lost a friend before.

"Yeah, we've had our moments haven't we?" Writ siddled to the side of Fish and stared at the window, "You know, I don't know what you see in that Ciro guy." He sighed, "He's got a fire god and you've got a water god, I mean, how does that work?"

Fish shrugged. "We're allies," he said. "We've been allies since the very beginning."

He stared at their reflections in the window. This felt like he was breaking up with a lover or something. It was weird.

"I'm really sorry, Writ," he said, "But we're just not gonna work out."

Damn that sounded like something you'd say to a lover... in a cliche movie.

He aimed a jet of water at the window and splashed their reflections into a blurry mess.

Writ looked down and gave Fish a pat on the shoulder, he turned to him, "So next time I see ya, you're gonna be after my a**?" He chuckled, "You know, sometimes I think that the gods are the ones to blame. I seriously have no idea why I hate Ciro so much. Speaking of, did he get my message?"
