Private The first rank, usually for enlisted soldiers and graduates from the Army boot camp, the Private serves as the bulk of the ground army. Privates can serve in any unit, airborne, ground or armored, or be sectioned of to serve under a naval commander as a marine unit.

Corporal The Corporal is the first promotion in the army, given to soldiers with exception skills. Corporals generally serve as commanders of a small fire team, but Corporals can also serve in a regular unit. As a marine, the Corporal is generally in charge of defending a small portion of a ship or a small team of combat marines.

Sergeant Sergeants typically lead fire teams, though this role is sometimes filled by a Corporal, and there are typically two Sergeants in a nine-man combat squad. In the marine role, Sergeants generally command Corporals and can take over two regions of a ship.

Staff Sergeant Staff Sergeants are generally placed in charge of a squad but can also act as a platoon Sergeant. A Staff Sergeant can also hold an office position for support units. As a marine, the Staff Sergeant serves as a tactical adviser to a marine commander, or command up to three divisions of a ship.

Sergeant First Class The position of platoon sergeant is generally relegated to the Sergeant First Class, and when the platoon leader can no longer fill their role, it comes to the platoon sergeant to lead.

Master Sergeant The rank of Master Sergeant is usually an office position, with the Master Sergeant being in charge of a small section of a base, most often the motor pool. As a marine rank, the Master Sergeant is a rank that provides technical leadership and can also be placed in charge of a ship's armory.

First Sergeant The rank of First Sergeant holds two jobs in the Army: the job of overseeing the training of new officers or the head of a company sized troop unit. As a trainer, the First Sergeant is generally placed in charge of a boot camp or training facility. When in command, the First Sergeant can command several platoons formed into a troop.

Sergeant Major The rank of Sergeant Major is the highest combat rank earnable through actual combat alone, and Sergeant Major rank can command a battalion, or a group of troops. As a marine, the rank of Sergeant Major also commands a battalion of marines.

Lieutenant The rank of Lieutenant requires definite command ability and the tasks of the rank can vary from leading specialty platoons or assignment as Executive Officer company sized unit. The same is true for it's marine counterpart.

Captain The rank of Captain has several tasks that can be assigned to it: command of a company-sized unit, instruct at combat training centers and boot camps, and/or serving as staff officer at the battalion level. Often times, when commanding a company, the Captain rank is referred to as "Company Commander".

Major The Major rank typically serves as a battalion executive officer but can also serve as a primary staff officer for a brigade or a task force. The Major rank can also augment companies in combat. In the Federation marine corps, the Major rank copies the rank in the army.

Lieutenant Colonel The rank of Lieutenant Colonel generally commands a battalion-sized unit ranging from three hundred to one thousand soldiers with a Sergeant Major as the executive officer. This rank is typically awarded after sixteen to twenty-two years of service.

Colonel With the rank of Colonel generally comes command of entire infantry brigades or marine regiments, roughly around three thousand to five thousand soldiers. A Colonel can also serve as chief of staff for divisional or planetary staff agencies.

Brigadier General The rank of Brigadier General generally serves as a Deputy Commander for a division-sized unit and usually assists in the planning and coordination of a mission. In an infantry brigade not attached to a division, the Brigadier General usually serves as commanding officer. For the marine corps, the Brigadier General usually serves in the planning and overseeing of missions from a base.
