Winter was just about to fade away from the lands and Spring was just around the corner. This winter was the worst for him, the snow had been constant and the cold too much for him most of the time. He didn't have a warm little figure sleeping beside him anymore. But then again he hadn't had Kahili with him for quite some time now. She was off to bigger and better things, hopefully not getting herself into trouble as she usually did.
He thought a lot about going back to his family since he was tired of being alone all the time. But his parents had had more children, grandchildren to deal with, he probably wouldn't get any time with his parents or he would just be in the way. He smiled knowing his mother would tan his hide for thinking that. Vara always made room for her family no matter what.
For today though, he was still alone. And it seemed that he would remain that way as he wandered the fields, not seeing a single soul in sight.

Astral leaped forward, stopping every now and then to examine her reflection in the left over puddles from the rain. She was simply so happy that her mother had praised her with the words 'as beautiful as the stars themselves' that she couldn’t resist the burning happy feel that erupted from her in the form of a smile. She had spent a long time as a foal determining where her features hat come from, deciding that her pelt was mainly like her father except that she subtle hints of her mother speckled throughout her pelt. She was satisfied with this since she longed to feel close to her father most of all. Her sister Etoile took after their mother more, in colours and attitude yet Astral knew she loved them both dearly.
Lifting her head up high she began to prance around the field, closing her eyes and humming with each step. She felt so free, her young life only just beginning to experience the wonders of the world. Alive. Free. Both gifts from her parents.
Pausing Astral found herself looking up towards the sky. Although it was day time she liked to imitate the way in which her mother would gaze upon the starry night sky, feeling bond to it in a similar way that Astral could only imagine she felt towards the sea. It was at the sea that Astral first met Selene, the beautiful little panda seal that became fated to become her familiar. She enjoyed splashing in the Ocean, especially when Ayden, her father, went to visit his Lobster familiar. Yet another way she felt close to her father.
She had been told many stories, from fairy tails to how her parents actually met and played by the Oceans sandy shore all day. Perhaps that was the truth behind her favour of the day.
Walking in a daze Astral continued to hum songs and wiggle her body with each movement. Happiness was simply beaming out of her from all directions.

Mel continued to wander and keep his eyes open until he finally spotted a figure. If it wasn't for the dark color he would have sworn it was his own daughter. Kahili had just the same bounce in her step and was always happy wherever she went. Well at least when she was young that's how it had been. She never stopped moving, always running and chasing things and exploring everything she saw. She got that from him that was obvious, her curiousity was just more extreme, and always, or most of the time, ended in her getting into trouble of some sort.
Figuring this was as good a chance as any to have some company he wandered over to the wiggling mare. She sure did seem happy about something whatever it was and just watching her sunny and bright attitude made him smile. Identical to Kahili. "Nice day, hm? Sun sure beats all the rain and snow we've had by far. I think all the cold weather drove everyone away because I haven't seen anyone for I don't know how many days so you're a sight for sore eyes." He smiled to her again and nodded a greeting. "Name's Melanthios. Most call me Mel though, it's easier to say and remember."

((Ok so she may need to grow up a little before she is ready for a mate but I think she will get their quickly XD life will not be easy for her.))
Astral was slightly startled by the voice as her eyes had been closed. Blinking, a smile still peeled upon her she watched as the world started to come back into view. Immediately her eyes lay upon a blue stallion, his markings were beautiful like the lake as the petals of spring settled. "You pretty" she chirped in her soft melody like voice. As he spoke his name she found herself impulsively move her head to the side and squint softly as she attempted to say the harder version of his name. "Melon, Mel-land, Mel-an-vos?" She giggled softly knowing she had failed miserably. "Melly it is." Her smile lifted from her lips as it reached her eyes, he was right about the sun, it had changed her mood as well as her sisters. They had been born on the ‘day of love’ or at least that was how her Mother described it, spring babies. "My name is Astral. I like the sun, my mummy prefers the night." Innocent as always she started wiggling her rump once more from excitement.
She began to think about his other words, about the weather scaring people away, it reminded her of the story her father had told her about the forest guardian. "Maybe we should ask the guardian of the forest to make it shine brighter?" Astral was always up for a new adventure, and someone who she could share it with was always a huge bonus. As a youngling Astral spent all of her time with her sister Etoile, this had made her a little nervous about being on her own for two long, especially since she was no fool about the dangerous the dangers the world held after she had been attacked by a skinwalker as a hatchling. A most terrifying experience for one so young.
Suddenly she heard the familiar sound of wings from behind Melanthios, her eyes darted to the source as three beautiful doves erupted from their hiding place and took flight into the sky. They were as beautiful as the day itself and Astral found her eyes glued to them as they floated effortless across the sky. She would pretend with her sister that she could fly, but the truth was it was one thing she longed for.

Melly. That was a new one. Being called pretty was a new one too. She would prove to be one interesting mare but he chuckled none the less. "Thank you. You're very pretty yourself. I know my name's hard, sorry for that. It's Greek I think. Means dark flower or something along those lines." Things she said seemed to be a bit random but only reminded him more of Kahili as a foal. Spewing silly little things that crossed her mind and just spewed more out before she even got any answers to questions. "The sun is nice, it's warm so I like it too. The night fascinates me more though. The stars. Just looking at them and wondering what's out there. How beautiful it is. You don't get all that wonder in the daylight. Just clouds and sky." He was rambling of course and he knew it but honestly he didn't think she would mind. She was so full of energy maybe she was actually interested in his ramblings.
Mel tilted his head at her, wondering what she was talking about with a guardian of the forest and making something shine brighter. It took him a moment to realize she was speaking about the little joke he made about everyone being scared off by the weather. "Well I think it's bright today, don't you? Maybe everyone will start to come back now that it is. But who is this guardian of the forest? I don't think I've heard of someone like that before." He didn't know if she was serious about this guardian or if it was a legend so it was best just to play along. Just in case.

Astral continued to wiggle her rump enthusiastically as he spoke. He seemed like a fascinating creature, so much so that she found herself repeating the ‘key’ aspects under her breath. For every word she said the excitement simply built up behind her eyes, shining as bright as the sun itself. "I am pretty.... dark flower oooooo...... what’s out there?" She found herself instinctively looking to the sky once more, perhaps this was the truth behind her mothers’ fascination with the night sky, after all she would simply stare at the stars for hours, noting the way in which they flickered and danced across the canvas of black. She agreed that the night was pretty, but when he said that the day was simply clouds and sky she found herself pouting like a sulking child half screaming "NOT!" She spun around and as she did her feelings disappeared to be replaced by awe and wonder. "It may not be the same as the night by the wonders of the day are all around if you just care to open your eyes. My mummy says that there is a wonder to behold around every corner if you only welcome it." She turned her head back to him and grinned before continuing, determined to prove him wrong, to show him that the day was just as fascinating. "Take the flowers, how they open up to the sun to reveal their magic, then you have all the insects and the animals of the forest, all separate yet part of the whole, working together to survive in the great cycle." Sometimes Astrals words made her sound older and wiser than she actually was, yet her still wiggling rump reminded those around her of her childlike tendencies. "The powers that take a tiny seed and create a giant tree that provides us shade is pure magic. None of that would happen without the sky or the clouds!"
As if to distract her she heard him mention the forest guardian once more, excitement began to capture her heart as she considered the possibility of actually looking for the magnificent creature from her father stories. "My daddy tells my sister and I stories of the great forest guardian..." she began, turning her body back around and half leaping towards Melly so that her nose was inches from his chest. Looking up at him, with warm breath and sparkling eyes she continued, "They say he has not been seen for three centuries, ever since the war between our kind and himself. He has the power to control every kind of weather and it is said that when he is unhappy it rains, when he is happy the sun shines." She continued to grin at him; it felt like an achievement that she knew more than a fully matured adult. Astral liked to collect her mini-victories.
As if it was partially an after thought Astral spoke again, "I hope more people come out to play as well." Then as he words triggered a memory locked within her young mind she found herself humming the tune to ‘the sun has got his hat on’ before she started to skip around Melly. Her mind wandered to the concept that he would consider himself to old to play with her, a lot of older stallions did, believing that she was naive and annoying, some simply saw her as a good mare to bare their children which made Astral very angry, she wanted to believe in true love, magic and butterflies, she didn’t simply wish to settle for ‘good’ and second best. Her mother and father had always spoilt her and her sister, treating them to berries and the luxuries of the world, now she expected nothing less from the rest of her life.

Mel took a couple steps back at her outburst and just listened to her for a little bit, making sure she wasn't going to attack him or anything, before he spoke. "I was only referring the sky itself, not the life on earth. In the sense of looking at just the sky, the night has more to see than in daylight. If we're talking about earth in the night and daylight, sure daylight has its advantages outweighing the night. Seeing the flowers and all the other critters coming out. But. The night also has interesting things. There's flowers that only bloom in the moonlight and shimmer a bright a yellow that you wouldn't see in the day. There's also bugs called fireflies that light and fly around like little mini lights." He smiled at her and tilted his head to the side. "Why don't we just say the day and the night both have their pros, shall we?" With a wink he turned to start walking with his new friend and listen to her new story.
"I haven't heard anything of a forest guardian having a war with our kind before but the parts about the weather sound more like mother nature to me. She has some extreme power, let me tell you. If it weren't for her we wouldn't have any of this," he said motioning to the fields and trees around them. "And we wouldn't even be here today. Maybe she knows your forest guardian. I bet they're best friends." With a chuckle he smiled to her again.

Astral smiled and looked at the stallion, as soon as her comments had left her lips they had been forgotten, just like a goldfish she tended to shift her thoughts from one subject to another. Now her thoughts were focused entirely upon the fairy tales she had been told, they lingered in her mind like memories of her own, playing in images and colours that whirled fantastically around in her mind. Perhaps he was right about the weather being part of nature rather than the domain of the forest guardian; perhaps she lent her powers to him due to being a friend? Similar to how Etoile helped her when they were on adventures.
Her imagination was running wild now, so much so that she began shaking and suddenly burst out with the words, "I want to go meet them!" She wagged her tail playfully, licked her lips and wiggled her rump once more. Excitement began to linger in every cell of her being; it flowed like her spiritual essence around her. She had not felt this excited for some time now, it was a fascinating sensation and one that could only be relieved by her curiosity being fulfilled.

Mel beamed at her excitement and let out a long rolling laugh. She certainly was a fun one. "Wanna know something?" He leaned forward and whispered in her ear, "You already have." He let her register that for a moment before continuing. "Mother nature of course is everywhere. She puts a piece of her soul in every living thing to keep it alive and growing. The grass and the treats you eat is a piece of her and that is how she nourishes you. Takes care of you like one of her own. The forest guardian I'm not so sure of. But if he does have the powers of the weather you're meeting a piece of him right now with the sun that shines down on us. I bet he watches out for us too, to make sure we're safe from harm. Hence the 'guardian' part. But as I've only just learned of him today that is just how I see it. I'm sure we can meet some equally interesting people though. The land's full of them!" He nodded and looked out over the rolling hills as the wind breezed by, causing the grass and the trees to wave gently along with it. A perfect day indeed for telling stories and meeting new friends.
