What Casia was doing at the mall was disobeying.
What she was supposed to be doing was buying new clothes. Casia was not against clothes in general. On the grand scale, she saw the usefulness of clothes and even liked them. She didn't want to go around naked. But as far as Casia was concerned, she already had all the clothes she needed. She had come with a whole bunch of them from Anna's house, and though they had gone out of style forty years ago, she liked them. Jane may have tried to make it clear that Casia was going to need some sort of formal outfit just to say she had one, but Casia didn't want to buy one. It felt like betrayal. A square sort of modern outfit in her rad old wardrobe, one of the few survivors of the transition between parents, would practically be treason. So instead, Casia sat on the rim of the mall fountain and watched people walk by. She wondered what she should spend the money on, but mostly she wondered whether Jane would go ape at her if she came home without anything. To distract herself, she rapped a beat on the edge of the fountain with her knuckles. She could worry about the parental unit later, for now she would just take some time to think.

Joshua was being dragged through the mall yet again, this time by his older cousin Almira. "Come on, you need a new outfit!" She insisted. "How are you going to impress those girls if you're always dressing so formally? Boring!" The teenager was insistant on making her younger cousin a star. She was into fashion. You name the clothing brand, she knew all about it.
Josh tried to explain that he wasn't interested in impressing girls. He wanted to go to the music store, and maybe pick up some new picks for his guitar lessons. He always seemed to lose those. "Almie," He said, pausing. He'd spotted a blonde girl sitting on the edge of the fountain. "Can I go talk to her?"
Almie, always willing to encourage her cousins to meet people, nodded. She'd keep watch.. when she wasn't busy looking at clothes.

Casia finally got up and stretched, wings fluttering gently. She wasn't jazzed to go shopping but she could at least say she looked. Heading towards the clothing store nearby, she saw that at least she wasn't the only one who wasn't thrilled about clothes shopping. There was a boy over there that looked almost grim.
...Was he looking at her? Casia paused, not sure she wanted to get closer, and then realized how stupid it would be not to go into a store because someone was looking at her. Of course he was, not everyone saw chicks with big brown wings go shopping every day. Sure, he wasn't too normal looking either, but that was more because of his threads than horrible genetic mutations. Calming herself down, she headed into the store, even giving him a sort of fluttering wave as she went in. She wasn't afraid of people looking at her funny, so there! Feeling a tad braver and a tad less paranoid, she paused and looked around. Which way to the girls' section?

Joshua blinked, but he was pleased he'd gotten a wave. He wasn't trying to look at her in any special way, he was just curious. He'd never seen her before. Well, maybe she didn't go to the park very often. And that was were Josh sent most of his time. He silently decided to follow her into the clothes store.
He tapped her on the shoulder. "Hi," He said, "I'm Joshua. What's your name?" He asked politely.

Casia swung around, only to see the boy that had been looking grim behind her. Because he didn't exactly seem stoked about being in the mall either, she relaxed and gave him a nervous grin. "Casia." she said carefully. She looked around the store one last time and gave up. The girls' section and dresses could definitely wait. "Those're some really boss threads." she informed him, gesturing at his outfit. "Any occasion, or are you starting a fad?"

Joshua smiled, "Casia's a pretty name." He told her. He blinked, he'd never heard the term 'boss threads' before. "What do you mean by that?" He asked. He looked at his outfit. It seemed perfectly fine to him. Was there something wrong with it? "Um.. Well..." He started. He didn't know how to explain.
"Mom likes to tell me I look like a prince in this outfit." He said. "I wear it to make her happy." Okay, a lie. But what would a girl say if he told her he felt most comfortable dressed this way?

"You know, they're cool?" the siren patiently explained. She scrutinized him, thinking of a few Disney movies. "Ye-eah, I can see that." she said slowly. She felt a brief stab of envy. She used to wear 60's clothing to make Anna happy, but now Anna wasn't around to be happy about it. She still wore it, but no one was wearing it WITH her, and it felt surreal. "Where's your princess?" she asked, mostly to distract herself from the memories of the guardian. It was a dumb question, but it was that kind of moment, the kind that needed some silliness in it.

Josh smiled, he was relieved that 'boss' didn't mean anything bad. He paused, and had to think about her next question. Could he consider Nataya his princess? "I don't really have a princess," He explained with a grin.
"More of a fairy."

Casia raised an eyebrow, smiling. "A fairy. I can dig that." Princesses were just pretty, but fairies were pretty and magical. It made sense to her. Not sure whether the fairy in question was real or for the sake of conversation, she persisted. "Are they a good fairy or an evil fairy?" She paused to consider that technically sirens were also supposed to be evil and labelling wasn't fair. She added, "Or is it a more sort of neutral thing?"

Joshua smiled, his friend was one of his favorite subjects. "She's a good fairy." He said happily. "She's really nice. Her brother and I are best friends." It was a safe topic, as long as he didn't mention her name. He didn't know if Casia knew her or not. He assumed Casia would.
Or if she hadn't, she would. You couldn't live your life without meeting Nattie.

Casia had indeed met Nataya, but as a baby. The sugarplum fairy wasn't quite at the top of her mind. Instead, she waved a finger at him and acted very stern and serious. "And you'll protect her and be dashing and stuff? You'll be the most princely cat around for her, and you promise, cross your heart and hope to go deaf?" Going deaf was a fate worse than death to Casia, the worst ting she could imagine. Beethoven could handle it, but the siren couldn't even imagine it.
As she said the words, she couldn't help but grin. Everyone knew real boys weren't like that, but it was fun to pretend and admonish this formal looking fellow. In some ways he reminded her of Antony, only he was actually acting like she existed. It was pretty golden, and she decided maybe it hadn't been such a bad idea to go into the clothes store after all.

Joshua nodded, he already planned to protect his friends. His parents were always commenting that he was dashing and brave; though they might have been teasing him. "I promise." He said, nodding again. It would be horrible to go deaf, though. He didn't know how he'd be able to sing if he went deaf.
"But what's a princely cat?" He asked, curious.

Casia nodded, satisfied. "Good, now keep it." she told him cheerfully. She paused as he asked her what a cat was. She guessed it had been the wrong word to use, he had already made it clear he didn't know much 60's slang. "Well," she explained, "A cat is a cool person, like ourselves, and a princely cat is a cool person who also acts princely." She pointed to him. "Like you, right?"
She looked him up and down and then looked at the clothes around the store. "So what's a prince doing shopping here? Doesn't really seem like your style." Then again, it wasn't Casia's style either. Getting an inkling and remembering his face, she asked "You didn't get dragged here, did you?"

So a cat was a cool person. He couldn't wait to tell his mother that when he got home. She probably already knew; she seemed to know everything. That wouldn't keep Josh from dutifully informing her of the terms he'd learned on his trip to the mall.
"Er.. I'm not really a prince," he explained. "I like to play that I'm one. Mom says I'm too nice to be one, really." Thali had only recently told her son that she thought a real prince would be vain and much less polite. He frowned as he pointedly glanced at his older cousin. "Yeah.. My cousin, Almie." He said in explaination. "She thinks I need to dress more like my brother." He rolled his eyes.
Dressing like Vincent clearly wasn't an option.

Casia nodded, thinking again of Antony, though not on purpose. "I can see that, too." she decided. "The real thing can be a bummer."
That figured. Why did older people always try to boss people around? "Well, why should you have to dress up like someone else?" she proclaimed hotly. "You shouldn't have to dress up how some... Some bogue thinks you should!" She stamped her foot for emphasis, brown eyes lit up rebelliously. She wasn't just talking about Josh. She was letting out her frustration at even having to be in this lame mall. "And... And they just expect you to obey them without even asking if you want to! 'Go buy a dress!' What if you don't want a new dress from the mall? What if you don't LIKE all the grody, stiff formal clothes?"
She paused and coughed embarrassedly. "That's one example, anyway. Um. Yeah." Trying to regain control of the conversation she added "We've gotta question authority, after all." somewhat defensively.
