It is the modern world. Normalcy at every corner. Except, for those few who have special animals that talk and are intelligent. They are Spirit Guardians, or just guardians, and each one reflects the true soul of the human they are attached to. Not every person can find a Guardian. The Sacred Gaia is the life force of the Ether and the Spirit Guardians. It is the source of the Ether, and thus, of all magic. Those who have Sacred Gaia coursing through their veins are eligible to have a Spirit Guardian.

Each Guardian is unique. It takes the permanent form of the animal that its human companion is most compatible with. That reflects the true soul. Guardians do three things:

They are intelligent and can speak, as well as representing the most dominating trait of their human companion.

They grant a special, unique power to their human companions, such as power over the wind, for a bird Guardian, or the power of strength, for a wolf Guardian.

They allow humans to be able to open the portals between Earth and Ether, that mystical world which is the source of all magic. These 'gateways,' these portals as they are, cannot be activated without a Guardian, and only Guardians know how to find and use these gateways.

On Earth, magic is weakened, dull; a fragment of true power. In Ether, all magic is more powerful, considerably so. Ether is a wild, feral, untamed wilderness with no permanent settlements. It is a land of many beautiful and dangerous geographies, from perilous, towering mountains, to dense forests teeming with life and predators, to vast, barren deserts where only the strong survive.

Background: Shef is just another seventeen-year-old. He knows about Spirit Guardians because his father had one, though he seems to hate them... His father's Guardian was the last thing Shef expected.

Other: Regond is a bitter old owl who tends to rant on about the golden days. Every now and then, events cause him to recall and share stories about his travels with Shef's father.

Power: Uses ice to fight, either by freezing someone to death or creating sharp shards. As of yet, she's unaware of this ability and Narissa hasn't seen fit to tell her about it yet. Persuasiveness, often seen as charisma on Earth. Her natural charm allows her to have a lot of friends. She's also a cunning little thing... (In the Ether, she can manipulate people, but only to an extent.)
Personality: A bit of a clutz... She's one of those people that'll fall upstairs but can't bump into a single thing at night. Holly has an easy-going attitude, very friendly, enjoys joking around (that includes making fun of herself) but she can be serious. She likes to hang out with her friends (and her guardian spirit), but sometimes prefers to be left alone. A fun-loving, easy to laugh kid that'll listen to your problems, even if she has her own to worry about.
Background: Grew up in a large city before she moved to a small town on the outskirts... After her parents got divorced and her mom abandoned her, she got her guardian spirit. She thinks it was because of how remarkably well she handled her parents' break up and the fact that she took care of herself for a few months.

Background: Didn't have a human companion until Holly came along. Mostly spent her days going back and forth between Earth and the Ether, entertaining herself. Some of the animals she's spoken with have spread the rumor that she herself was there in the Garden of Eden...

Power: My night vision is excellent, so is my sense of hearing and smell. My nails grow quickly, and sharpen without my consent - my teeth are the same way. Some people have asked me if I was a vampire - laughingly, of course. I also have a lot more stamina than many people, and I'm stronger than most. My dexterity is unmatched.
Personality: Normally I'm laid back and very easy going, but once someone sparks my temper I'm uncontrollable for a very long time. I spout things I don't mean, I do things I eventually regret, and the only one who can bring me under control is my guardian. Sometimes though, we both go into rages of blood lust, and it takes time before both of us cool down long enough to make sense of things. I find comfort in the outdoors and with other people like me, but it's my natural instinct to be the leader in a group - if you want something done right, do it yourself. I also have the capabilities of being quite the b***h - and I despise vegetables with every fiber of my being. You're better off just not getting in my way.
Background: It was... strange. I needed someone, wanted someone to look at me and acknowledge me, and then all of a sudden, she appeared. She could speak to me - she could get inside my head, knew what I was thinking. At first I was afraid, I ran away - I wasn't the most graceful of people back then - but she kept finding me no matter what I did. Eventually, I stopped running, and turned to face her, thinking that she was some harbinger of death and that I was going to meet my end. I met my best friend instead.

Power:All of the powers this ridiculous earthly form is blessed with, I suppose. But in my true form I have limitless power over fire and darkness - I am one of the more powerful Guardians, as I was simply existing in Ether long before the modern world appeared, watching and waiting for the time when I would find my human companion. I also have little quirks - for instance I am capable of differentiating different metals from each other based on smell, and I have a certain charm about me that allows Guardians to trust me easily, despite my outward appearances. Strangely though, Falian hasn't been able to channel my true powers yet, even though we've been together for several years. Maybe if I get her to Ether, that mental block would disappear. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway.
Personality:Usually I am soft-spoken and subtle, but if anyone threatens Falian even in the slightest an indescribable rage erupts from within me, and I have a hard time regaining my sense of self. It's sad to say that Falian also has that tendency to explode given the right conditions. I'm also a bit of a control freak, and I'm rather cautious. Falian, however, is rebellious in every way. Perhaps it's because of the way human society has treated her.
Background:I was in Ether since the dawn of man, pacing restlessly and emptily as I waited for my true person to appear on earth. Many other Guardians always remarked how strange it was that one of the oldest Guardians hadn't found a companion yet, and eventually I grew self-conscious and unsure, retreating away from the other Guardians and their humans into the forests of the Ether. I began to thinking that I was defective - that I was never meant to have a true person. Then Falian was born. I have two greatest days in my life: the day she was born, and the day she accepted me and we officially became bonded as the Guardian and the Guarded. Life is good.

Background: Raye Demme is from London. Because of his family's sudden and mysterious bankruptcy, Raye's parents sent him to America to stay with his grandparents. There, Raye was forced out of his luxurious life and into a life of tiring labor. There, he developed a passion for gardening, and soon began to plant his very own forest. This love for nature got him his Spirit Guardian, called Yemits.

Background: Yemits' power is weak compared to most of his fellow Spirit Guardians, but on Ether, where forests and open plains take up most of the world, his power is among the greatest. Always left alone to care for the forests in the Ether, Yemits does not talk much and is easily embarassed. At all times, he carries in his mouth the branch of a tiny plant, symbolizing his love for all forms of life.

Other: Yemits tends to ram people with his head when he is frightened. When he turns into his Ether Form, his voice becomes low and rasping and his personality changes, making him angry and violent. In battle, Yemits uses his fists and tail more then his power over plants. He calls himself the "Guardian of the Forest."

Power: Parallel Sight - this allows Calentine to have magical vision-oriented powers.
Personality: Calentine is hotblooded and bloodthirsty. He is rash and violent. An excellent warrior, he is almost unstoppable in close quarters combat. Against humans, at any rate.
Background: Calentine killed a lizard by cutting it with a shard of broken glass, and accidentally cut himself in the process. That lizard corpse generated Onstaan, a relatively young Spirit Guardian.

Other: Calentine fights for an unknown master. But his prerogative would be to always kill.

Background: Onstaan has been (unfortunately) chained to Calentine for his entire life, which has been filled with a great deal of murder.

Personality: Celes is sadistic and and cruel. But her more defining traits are her grace, beauty, cunning, and strength. Like that of a great cat. The cruelty and malevolence seem to have come about as a result of the corruption that power grants.
Background: Celes commited suicide. Or attempted to. She jumped from a cliff and survived. She would have died, however, if not for the interference of Saia--who was summoned during the instant of true beauty that was, in essence, the swan diving to its death.

As Celes becomes more savage and cruel, one might expect that her power would lessen, as her link to Saia lessened. However, grace and beauty is the truth of this pair's link. As long as Celes maintains her composure....
Background: Saia is an old spirit. He is 5009 years old... born just three thousand years after the Beginning. Few are older than Saia.

At first, like any sensible person, he didn't believe, until the horse, who called itself Sleipnir, showed him Ether, and is still looking for a scientific explanation to the horse and Ether.

Power: In Ether, she is capable of sprouting beautiful butterfly wings and can take flight, as well as having control of the winds. In that other realm, her very blood immediately becomes poisonous. While in the human world, however, she is merely light on her feet and is only capable of controlling wind to a certain degree. She - in the Ether - can also walk on water. Though she is adept at using her powers, she is unable to bring out their full potential because her lack of confidence in herself. Alhiria constantly tries to make her more self-sure.
Personality: She is soft spoken and fragile, and a bit of a coward. However, when people are relying on her, she will do what is necessary to protect them. She wants to make people proud of her, and she feels honored when people trust her enough to talk about personal issues. She is someone you can count on to listen and give good advice. She is also very self-conscious and is always afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing.
Background: She had always been a shy one, even when she was small. And instead of talking to people, she always talked to the butterflies that lived in the garden near her home. Surprisingly, one day, one of them talked back. Alhiria has been with her ever since.

Other: She loves flowers and is very friendly with insects. This however, excludes spiders. Having taken ballet ever since she was a little girl, she is also an excellent dancer with a natural, delicate grace.

Power: Control of the winds and the gift of flight. Also poisonous blood and flesh.
Personality: On the surface, she's quiet and sweet, but she is of the poisonous breed. She is always kind to Floreta, but sometimes she treats others with surprising scorn. She is scathingly sarcastic, but never to Floreta. Most of the time however, her Guarded's nature rubs off on her, and Alhiria is as kind as Floreta. She is keenly aware of the emotions around her, despite her attitude sometimes. She just chooses to ignore it.
Background: Alhiria has never been too fond of Ether, preferring to people-watch on earth with the other butterflies as she watched and waited for her special someone. Then, one day, a small girl went over to the flowerbed where she lay, and spoke to her. When the girl's soft, musical voice reached her ears, Alhiria knew she had found the one. They had been together ever since, having gone to the Ether several times in the spance of twelve years. They are inseparable.

Other: She's not particularly fond of her Ether form. Why? Because she can't fool anyone that way.

Personality: Loner, quiet, scheming, a bit crazy
Background: Lucius's father is a violent drunk and his mother is just trying to get by. His older brother just up and left the house one day and he hasn't been heard from by his family since. Lucius plans to follow in his footsteps. Langsley, his Guardian, came to him because of his dexterity and sleight of hand with a bit of ink, graphite or paint.

Other: Lucius loves art and puzzles and has a taste for the morbid (he's a nice enough guy, though). He believes that school is a waste of time because of the system and consequentially does not go often.

Personality: Similar to Lucius; it is difficult to say what she may be thinking.
Background: Langsley feared to approach a human, feeling that no one would really want a spider guardian, though when she saw Lucius she immediately knew that he was finally the one, and slid into his life without making a scene.

Other: Lucius doesn't know what a Guardian is, due to their lack of communication, not that it matters much (to her).

Spirit Guardian: A blue and orange tree monkey.
Power: Electricity. When "Kiki" changes worlds or situations dramatically or sharply blue veins circulate around her for a period of time. The energy surges in streams out of her hands.
But like all monkeys- Kiki has agility and flexibility.
Personality:
Kiki is a lover of mischief, and trickery. She has a penchant for desirable items, and has an inhuman knack for climbing. No fear of heights,
which is good and bad.
Background: Angéleke was abandoned at a young age.
With power hungry law-breakers at the heels of her Mother and her Guardian, Her mother dropped her down a waterfall in the middle of the Forests, hoping either the fall would kill her or she could drown to death before the Evil people took away her power.
Well, just so happened that was the day the four-month-old girl learned to swim.
And swim she did, right to safety of her Guardians warm fur.
Her monkey companion is much older now, but both still possess chilling similarities.
She has yet to go out into the human world, but longs to do so.
Although, growing up with Gypsies and animals doesen't exactly make you the most modest person.
So those from the human world may find her a tad.. *ahem* brash.
Although, she could just be trying to con you into a pretty necklace you are wearing or that lovely piece of clothing.
Maybe thats how Kiki is never wearing the exact thing twice?

Power: Electricity, inhuman dexterity, agility, and flexibility.
Personality: Mischievious and Witty. Unfortunatly, the years have made him less eager to jump around, so He'll calmly wait for Angéleke to return or usually sit on her back or saunter around the branches.
When he becomes lively again though, challenged or angered he'll quickly return to his younger, energetic self.
Background: Kal was the Guardian of Kiki's late father, and stayed with her mother until she betrayed him. Imagine, throwing your own daughter to her death?!
Odemunk attacked the foolish mother [who ended up alive after all]
And then went after the child, and decided for himself to teach her the ways of his magic- going against the ways of the family code.
It was supposed to be passed down through the men, but Odemunk had to do what was right.
Other: He's rather cute, isn't he? He has a wisened accent.

Power: Rat can alight in flames, without being injured or damaging her clothing.
Personality: Rat is quiet, independent, rebellious, down-to-earth, and observant--basically an introvert. She doesn't really care to talk to anyone at all, even her Guardian.
Background: Rat was one day walking along the path, in a park. It was winter... and a child, ten years old, was walking along the lake. When the child fell into the ice... Rat did nothing. She stayed behind her tree, and when help came, it was too late. Out of that tree dropped Nipp.

Background: Nipp was born when Rat was. Of course, she wasn't always called Rat.

Power: Given a distinct advantage over his opponents in hand-to-hand combat. He's unusually quiet and rarely bumps into things.
Personality: A blunt, strict leader who only gives praise when earned and does not accept quitters. He's a strong believer in learning from your mistakes. Although ambitious and--some say--abrasive, he has a rarely-seen compassionate side for his students.
Background: After he turned fifteen, he led a life pretty much on his own. He was always exceptionally narrow-minded until he met his Guardian. Harlin was freeing a dog from some cruel group's idea of a game when Damascus sought him out.
Theme: Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace
Other: Graceful, quick, and dexterous. He's a martial arts expert/teacher in the Ether.

Power: In the Ether, Harlin can be inhumanly fast and strong. His eyesight also improves, but that may just be the magical effects of the Ether taking place.
Personality: Similar to his human companion, but maybe less strict and more compassionate. He doesn't believe in coincidences.
Background: Lived a relatively short life without Harlin, at least compared to other Guardians.

Gender: Female
Spirit Guardian: Queenie the Cat
Power: Unparalleled balance and agility, not to mention flexibility. Gives Marina cat ears and tail in the human realm, but also allows her to change into a cat-demon in Ether, similar to how Queenie changes into her Ether form. But she doesn't know this yet. Right now, she can only change into a regular house cat. Her fur/skin is retardant to fire and electricity. Also, she doesn't know this yet either, but when she becomes able to change into a cat-demon, she and Queenie will also be given power over light - the flames of the sun, able to gain energy from the sun and snow. The flip side of this though, will be that they both become less powerful at night.
Personality: She is sassy and can take a beating, though she has a sharp tongue and is very wishy-washy with who she likes and who she doesn't. She doesn't like people, and has a very keen sense of smell. She loves to play, and she loves fish. She is merely a shadow of the sad, tearful little girl she used to be, but she can been snappish and cruel at times, hateful at the world. However, you can rarely pin her personality down, for she rarely speaks. Queenie often talks for her.
Background: Having been brought up in an abusive household, she was thrown out one day by her alcoholic father and - with nothing to live for - attempted to kill herself on the first snow of the year. Queenie managed to stop her in time, having been born of the very blade Marina had tried to end her life with. Together, they have managed to put the smile back on Marina's face.

Other: She took gymnastics when she was a child, and she can also play piano.

Age: 2
Gender: Female
Power: Flexibility, balance and agility, along with skin retardant to flame and electric currents. She also gives her Guarded Neko ears and tail in the human world.
Personality: Queenie, being young, is a bit stuck up and tends to stick her nose into the air quite often. She is fierce for such a tiny Guardian in the human realm, but that courage is shown in her Ether form. Not many Guardians like to mess with her when they base the competition purely on size, and she likes it that way. But if the rival sticks around to realize Queenie isn't very strong yet, it's up to Marina to yank the cat away before she gets in over her head. Queenie is ridiculously headstrong. And who can blame her when one looks at her Ether form? It is the reason why she prefers the Ether over the human realm. She is one of the most beautiful Guardians in the Ether. One wonders why she and her human's colorations out of Ether are so... simple.
Background: There has never been a world without Marina. Queenie doesn't want there to be.

Power: On Earth, it's the ability to yell and be heard over a mob. In the Ether, her voice becomes a weapon, rupturing eardrums and immobilizing people/things (More like they can't move since they're bent over, clutching their ears in pain). It's more or less aimed, meaning whichever direction her mouth is turned is going to get the worst of it.
Personality: Goes out of her way to do about the exact opposite of what she's told. She can be defiant, sarcastic, and disrespectful when she doesn't get what she wants. She does have a twisted sense of honor, however.
Background: Erin never knew her parents and grew up in an orphanage, running away when she was five. She got her Guardian after she stirred up a riot on Earth. What can she say? She's a li'l rebel.

Other: She's lived in the Ether for a few days now and already has a good sense of direction while in it, although she's not nearly as good as Kiki.

Bakka

Both singular and plural in name, the Bakka are residents of the upper canopies of the Sylstern Forest. They feed upon smaller creatures, and remain direly feral despite the increased influx of human travelers. No Bakka has ever showed sentient intelligence. They carry venom and spin webs, and are as large from head to web spinner as a man is tall. They are somewhat quick, and as all insects, very powerful for their size.
