A Cerynei doe carefully stepped through the trees, she made sure to avoid stepping on any flowers for she didn't want to damage something so beautiful and defenseless. Her head throbbed slightly as she walked, it served as a constant reminder of her memory loss during the great fire in her old home. She had come to this land with others of her kind now that their home was a barren wasteland, but other then that she was absolutely lost. She barely remembered what had happened, having merely woken up on the ground in a burning forest. Her lungs had been full of burning smoke and her head filled with pain, she had barely managed to escape the fire and pondered now if it would have been better if she had just died by the flames. Despite the fact that she could barely remember it and it had been ravaged by flames, her heart still ached to be back, though she didn't know what it was about that place that she had missed.

Irena's pace sped up a little as she grew thirsty, she had been traveling for too long, her fear had made it hard for her to get much sleep and thus she was constantly on the move. She began looking for the nearest water source, even a puddle would do if she could find one. As she walked her ears caught the sounds of the forest, the chirping of the birds and the crackle of leaves beneath her feet, she remained wary worried about what sort of creatures might live in this new land. Slowly the trickling sound of a stream fell upon her ears and she relied on that sound to lead her to water, beginning to head in the direction it was coming from.

Mittrei flew lazily over the forest floor. She didn't bother to rise very far above it. She didn't have much use for soaring majestically or whatever it was that the stronger-winged soquili did with their time. She was content with flitting about.

It wasn't the usual time of day for her to be awake but the clouds above had darkened the area into dimness. It was enough for her eyes to be comfortable seeing, even in day. It was her habit to sleep at night, yes, but she had never let habits rule her entirely. The day I do that is the day my life will become relentlessly dull.

She was still musing upon this thought when she glimpsed something through the trees. It was first just the flash of light on water but it was something else too, something on the other side of the stream. She spread her wings wide and landed gently on the leaves below her. What was it? Some sort of deer? She thought she glimpsed the tufted tail of one of the deer that sometimes seemed to infest the area. She wasn't quite certain, though...

"You there! If you're not a dumb animal then speak up!" She shouted over the sound of the trickling water and hoped her voice would reach.. whatever it was. If it was simply a deer then she'd try to find something else to occupy her time with. If it wasn't... she might have found herself some entertainment.

Irena gazed down at her hooves as she walked, it had become a habit of hers for whenever she was feeling embarrassed of blue. Unfortunately for her that was quite often and she struggled to keep her eyes up and focused on whoever she was speaking to. She quickly jerked her head up, struggling with herself, she should be brave! After all she had managed to survive the fire and find her way to this land, there couldn't possibly be anything that she wouldn't be able to tough out. So why was it she found socializing so hard?

She shook her head as she walked up to the stream, her ears flattened as she craned her neck to take a sip. That was when she heard the shout and her head quickly snapped up, she hadn't noticed someone else nearby. Her eyes followed the brilliant colors and traced the edges of the wings, they were beautiful but ominous. She though back to what she remembered, Kalona had wings so was this one of them? Her eyebrows scrunched together as she thought trying to summon the image of what a kalona might look like, but she couldn't recall whether or not she had ever seen one.

That didn't matter as long as whoever it was wasn't going to try to eat her, so she turned her attention to the words. Dumb animal? She frowned, well she most certainly wasn't... she hoped. She wanted to reply but the words escaped her, "I'm not... not a dumb animal!" she shouted across the stream.

Mittrei's eyes widened with bemused surprise at the other soquili's reaction. She supposed she'd be fairly insulted if someone called her an animal... but she didn't look enough like one to merit it. This creature was another matter entirely. From this distance she looked almost exactly like a somewhat stocky deer. The mistake could have been made by anyone, really.

"If you're not, then stay put for a moment and I'll come over to say hello." Mittrei shouted her response and then flapped herself into the air again. She glided lazily over the stream and alighted on the opposite bank. She then trotted up briskly towards the other soquili. She was going to want a closer look at this one. It wasn't every day that one saw something as strange as that prancing around in the forest.

Irena frowned and froze in place, she didn't like the idea that this stranger was coming closer. She probably would have fled due to the fact she didn't know if this soquili was carnivorous, but her pride kept her in place wishing she could edge away. She had yet to meet someone so... rude until today, she could not recall anyone ever having called her a dumb animal before. She craned her neck and looked at her reflection in the water, she didn't look like a dumb animal did she?

The doe frowned and shook her head, her eyes darted back to the other mare and her strange wings. "H-hello..." she murmured backing away now that the mare was on the same side of the river. "see I'm... I'm not a dumb animal," she said quietly her eyes wide as she examined the other. The other mares colors were bright and beautiful far more colorful then her own, though she doubted they served as well for blending in. She pawed at the ground nervously, meeting others was always such an awkward experience at first.

"Hmmm... I suppose you aren't a dumb animal indeed." Mittrei cocked her head and scrutinized the stranger while talking, as if still uncertain of that fact. This creature was easily one of the most disorienting things that Mittrei had ever seen. She had the hooves, tail, and ears of a deer... but was not. Upon closer inspection she was quite obviously a soquili and the ability to speak anchored that assumption fully.

"Why do you look like that?" Mittrei didn't bother with the small talk. She was more curious than she was polite. "Does all your family look like that, or are you a fluke of nature?"

Irena scowled, she didn't like that this soquili kept saying the word dumb. Most animals she had seen while traveling seemed pretty intelligent and she had the urge to defend them. She gazed at the other mare feeling like some sort of freak show to be examined for once, it wasn't a pleasant feeling and she shifted awkwardly, though she couldn't say the same for the other as her eyes traced the shape of the strange wings.

"I'm a... Cerynei," she said calmly, it was rather frustrating how many times she had been asked that question. Why did so many soquili have no clue that her kind even existed? "All cerynei look... look roughly like this." Her short tail wiggled slightly as she shifted positions, putting more weight on her left legs. "I'm no... no fluke... there are many... were many like me..." She looked past the mare across the river wondering how many of her kind had managed to survive and make it this far.

"Cerynei." Mittrei sampled the word. It sounded a little odd to her, like no name for soquili that she knew of. Apparently the world was still full of surprises. Were the cerynei a large race of soquili that Mittrei had simply never encountered? It was possible.

"Iiiiiiiinteresting." She said the word slowly while she still digested the new information. "So what are you doing around here then?" she asked with a cheeky lilt. "Get tired of living wherever cerynei usually live? Not that I mind sharing the area as long as you don't bother me too much." That was her general policy with neighbors. She'd tolerate them so long as they neither upset her sleeping habits nor irritated her with regularity. She had many that she tolerated as such... and a few that she had not been able to tolerate. Fortunately, those soquili had taken the hint and moved elsewhere.

Irena nodded, feeling increasingly the need to be defensive. It almost felt like most of the words being spoken by this mare were insults, but always one to give the benefit of the doubt she refrained form commenting.

"yes... I suppose it... it is?" She raised an eyebrow, the natives of this land that she had encountered so far seemed to find her just as interesting as she had found them, which in a way was sort of a relief. "There was a... a great fire" She paused frowning at what the mare said next. "The fires... killed many and... and destroyed our homes, but it was a... beautiful land... we wouldn't leave it if we didn't... didn't have to." She scuffed her hoof in the dirt feeling edgy, did this mare have something against her or was she just naturally rude? She furrowed her brow and chuckled at the thought, perhaps that was just the way she had been brought up and her way of acting friendly. "I'll try not to... pester you if... if i can a-avoid doing... so," she smiled.

Surprisingly, the accusation and sharpness suddenly dropped from Mittrei's face. Her expression grew to one of seriousness when Irena described what had befallen her people and something almost like sympathy came along with it. "Is that so?" Her tone had still not yet taken back it's mocking nature. Mittrei knew altogether too well what it felt like to feel driven by danger from one's home into the unknown.

"Well, that's too bad but you'll simply have to start fresh. It isn't as hard as it seems, you know." Mittrei cocked her head and looked at Irena for a moment, considering. "I think that you'll make it." Then in an instant her teasing was back, yet still different. It had a friendlier edge now as she continued to speak with the stranger.

"If anyone around here bothers you, talk to me. I have some pretty effective methods for dealing with creeps."

Irena looked at the mare slightly shocked, had she said something wrong? She furrowed her brow trying to recall anything that might have possibly been offensive, but couldn't come up with anything. The thought that she might have come off as rude worried her, but she directed her attention to the other mares words and nodded slowly. "Y-yes..." she said before gazing off into the distance, "It was really... really terrible."

A chuckle escaped her lips, this mare seemed to be trying to comfort her? If she was it certainly was a strange way of doing it, but she was grateful. A smile flickered on the doe's face, "I plan... on doing so... though it would be better if I could find..." she paused, should she tell her about the prince and the rest of the herd? "my old... family," she murmured trying to play it safe, though she was also searching for her memories. "Everyone around... here seems pretty ... kind so I'm sure it... won't be too hard."

The grin on her face grew wider, " Really?... Well...t-thanks!" she beamed scuffing a hoof against the ground. "I'll have to... come find you if... if I do!" She giggled slightly, this mare wasn't so bad.

This one would need a lot of training if she wanted to survive in what Mittrei called the "real world." Anyone who wanted to take advantage of her would be able to do so in a minute with that tragic and yet cute nature of hers. Mittrei had learned that half of succeeding in life was about attitude and the other was... was what? Was a sparse sprinkling of threat when the attitude didn't work? Even if you were a mostly defenseless flutter, like she was, a bit of threat could go a long way if you seemed like you meant it.

Not that that particular thought had much to do with the current situation.

"Haven't seen your family. Would have noticed if there were more about that looked like you." Mittrei actually stopped to think about this for a moment but came to the same conclusion. She would definitely have remembered seeing such odd looking ones about.

A look of disappointment briefly flickered across her face before she sighed, shrugging. She shouldn't have gotten her hopes up, after all it was obvious by the mares reaction when she first spotted her that she was the first Cerynei seen. She wasn't even sure why she was looking for others of her kind anyway, her memories wouldn't help in this new land, would they?

"I'm s-sure you... would have," Irena chuckled, tilting her head as she wondered what this mare was thinking about. "They tend to... t-travel in g-groups..." she murmured, staring down at the dirt and grasses surrounding her hooves.

She had come across several lone members of her species, but despite their kindness they hadn't really provided her with much help in finding her past or a herd. All she could do was hope she'd come across a group wandering through the forests.
