Ensign The rank of Ensign is the staple rank and the first commissioned officer in the Galactic Federation StarFleet. Upon graduation from Academy, most graduates become Ensigns. Ensigns handle most of the grunt work on warships, running everything from Engineering to Weaponry. During wartime, most Ensigns are promoted to the higher ranks after a few battles.

Lieutenant Commander A Lieutenant Commander, as the rank clearly states, commands Lieutenants. Usually the Executive Officer (XO) of a warship, the Lieutenant Commander's primary duty is to ensure that all of the Lieutenants do their jobs and ensure that the ship runs smoothly. A secondary duty requires that if the Captain is killed, the Lieutenant Commander assumes command of the ship until the end of the engagement.

Commander The rank Commander is often accompanied by the issuance of the first ship command, though sometimes Commanders can serve as XO on board larger warships. When issued a first warship, Commanders receive smaller warships, ranging from Patrol Crafts to Carriers. Being the first warship command role, Commanders spend their first year under a limited probation. As an XO, the Commander serves the same role as the Lieutenant Commander, though the duties are greater.
