Uh, so I tried making paper (on my own, not the best idea ever...)
I followed all the instructions and everything, but all I got was a gooey mess that wouldn't spread out into a paper-like surface at all. In fact, it looked a lot like wet lint...
So, does anyone who knows how to make paper know what I did wrong?

How did you do it?
I have made paper by liquifying shredded paper and fibers in a blender with water---- then pouring it into a dishpan with more water--- then dipping into the dishpan with a piece of windowscreen stapled into a picture frame---- then pulling up the frame through the paper-and-water slurry---- holding the frame over the dishpan while it drips---- then flopping the new paper upside-down off the screen onto a folded towel (fast!)---- then blotting with another towel--- and, finally, peeling the nearly-dry sheet off the towel and pinning it up, like clothing on a clothesline.
It takes a little practice, but it's easy when you get the hang of it.
You can make paper with lint, or old shredded paper, adding different fibers for color or texture. We've used all kinds of dried stuff---grasses, leaves, feathers, seeds.
It's fun. Don't give up! smile

homemade paper tends to be thicker than the stuff you can buy in stores. Wet lint sounds right, maybe it needed to be a little thinner, like sunsetsmile said, you need to let the pulp dry out.

Hm... I guess it probably was too thick. Should I have blended it more? Or just added more water?

I would just put more water in the container that you're dipping into. Don't forget to really stir up the water and pulp in the container, and try to pull up less slurry.
I saw people making mulberry paper on tv, they were pulling up so little slurry with each dip that it literally looked like there was nothing on the screen when they pulled it up! The paper was beautifully translucent when they were done. They used it to make paper umbrellas and lamps.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with heavier paper---it just depends on what you want to use it for. They used to sell molds in the craft stores to make all kinds of shapes and images (like angels), and these required thick slurry. Kind of like cookie molds, or butter molds---you popped the shapes out of the molds, and when the little emblems were dry, they were used to decorate boxes, etc.
I think it's just practice. And raw materials, of course. Have fun!

Wait. So you're supposed to put the pulp into the bigger container with the water and then put the screen in and pull it up?

Yes, then the extra water drains away, and what is left on the screen is your sheet of paper.

Then you flip it over onto a towel or something that is absorbent. You can blot it gently with another towel, then lift it up and hang it to dry.

It's the perfect thing to do under a tree on a hot day!
