I was curious as to the relation of the name Light and Raito. Do they call Raito Raito in the japanese version or what? I'm slightly confused here. Keep in mind that I am relatively new to this series.

Raito is the Japanese pronounciation of Light. In Japan, L and R are interchangeable.

I hope I don't confuse you futher with this. Personally I like Raito better.

I mean in Japan, 'Light' sounds cool because it's foreign. However in English, it just doesn't sound that great because it's a real word here.

On the other hand 'Raito' retains the cool/foreign sounding. I think this is the reasoning beheind most of us who stick with 'Raito' over Light. Oh... and also because we're just *used* to 'Raito'.

I always used to wonder that Raito's name might have had the meaning of 'Right' as well as 'Light'.

On the subject of names, have you noticed...everybody else in Raito's family have names starting with 's'

Souchiro. Sachiko. Sayu

- then the name 'Raito' even seems to have a harsher sound to it too. This difference it also shown with Raito's hair. I wonder if his hair is supposed to be dyed red? ...or perhaps it's just that way so he looks more interesting.

O: I didn't even realize that... Maybe it's just to make him stand out more, to emphasize his differences with the other people in his family?

That seems like a good explanation.

That isn't why I use it. I don't give a flip if it sounds foreign or not, since I still know it's the same mearning either way. I tend to go back and forth between them. Just like I do with Nia (Near) and Mero (Mello)... however I never call Remu Rem or Ryuuku Ryuk. Don't know why *shrug* Just the way I do it.

For me, it depends... If I'm speaking out loud, I tend to say Raito. If I'm typing it, I guess it depends on the context... If I'm being official and guild-crew-member-ish (like for his b-day thread), I use Light, since it's the way the author said it was supposed to be spelled. However, if I'm just speaking as a fan, I'll often fall back on Raito.

Also, if I add -kun onto it, I say Light-kun, not Raito-kun, for reasons unknown.

Yeah, I was using Light then too, durring his b-day party.

Ooo! I know why! It's 'cause L use to always call him Yagami-kun and stuff! ... probably. You were brainwashed by L! Lucky-lucky.

rofl sure is!

I always say "Light" because it's one syllable, and it's what the artist put.
But I'm more fond of "Ryuuku" than Ryuk (I have a hard time pronouncing that...)
and "Remu" than Rem....
The only pronunciation I'll never make is "Eru." It seems rather pointless to me...

I'm more fond of 'Rem' to 'Remu'. 'Remu' sounds weird to me. I don't like anything that ends with 'mu'.

But Ryuuku sounds adorable!*cuddles him* 'Ryuk' sounds really serious which will not do for a *different* shinigami like him.

I'm not toofond of 'Light' either. It's because I read the chinese version. The chinese version of Raito's name in kanji(月) is moon. Moon and Light have REALLY different meanings...

There's no difference in pronunciation really for Remu and Ryuuku. When I actually say the names outloud I say them as Rem and Ryuk. As for Raito and L... I just say Light and L (never eru... since I'm sure I'd sound stupid trying to say it like that sweatdrop ).

... *giggle* Moon? Aww... that'd be cute, calling him Moon...

The Japanese merchandise says "Light" when it's written out in roman letters. 3nodding
