THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LOCATION

Talk about ideas from reading books, playing games or watching TV and film that have inspired you, or have perhaps inspired others with regards to what's out there.

For example, Tolkien used the myth of Dracula and wrote the book in Whitby (North-east England - Yorkshire). He even used Whitby as a location in the book that Dracula visits. There was also a Russian ship that did actually have an accident near Whitby - Demetrius.

There's also a lot of information regarding how Bram Stoker got the inspiration for Dracula - Whitby Sights - Dracula Trail.

That's one example of a place that inspired an author in the 1800s within the horror genre.

What else is there though?

Inspirational places are everywhere, and I get a lot of inspiration from real life places I know of or have visited, or even read about, watched in films or played in games. Music inspires me a lot, but the general inspiration topic is in the Writer's Circle. This thread is about locations, real or fictional that have inspired others or ourselves.

I have two large canyons in my world. One is likened to that of the Grand Canyon, and the other is like the Black Canyon - both of which are in the US. I've never been to America, therefore never been to either, but I've read up about them. I'd had ideas for these places originally, but needed to look them up and learn about them before I could give them clarity.

So...

Hmm, I had no idea about the Demetrius. They should really make a movie out of that one...

So if this is about places... I got something to chat about. I may not know where to place a canyon in my worlds but, I suppose I could if I actually researched into landmass and stuff like that.

Let's see, places that have been inspirational for my writings...
...I suppose Mt Everest is always inspirational. I do have a volcano in one of my stories that is almost as tall as mt Everest is and is home to the dragons in the story. Anyone who wants to even see a dragon has to climb to a very high altitude just to get a glimpse of one. I made some of those dragons so that they can even take lava baths and that's purely fantasy but, there are other dragons there that can't come close to the lava. My first story takes the reader to such volcano and the main character has to procure a dragon tooth.

There are other places but maybe I should save them one by one or I'm gonna run out of places to talk about.

Any volcanoes that give inspiration for that at all?
You'd need to combine a volcano with an ordinary mountain really.

Almost as tall as Mt. Everest, but as active or inactive as.............what volcano? I can't imagine it unless I know. Is it dormant, extinct, regularly active?

Umm, I never had an actual volcano for an inspiration actually. I figured the whole continent came to be after the volcano rose from the ocean. You see, the continent the characters live on is kinda like Australia in a way and the volcano is regularly active. That way it doesn't have huge explosions that can terminate the life on the continent at any time. I'm sure we have volcanoes that are like that nowadays right? I'm pretty sure I've heard of some on the Hawaiian islands that remain regularly active, yes?

One in particular springs to mind. That would be Kilauea.

That place seems really good for a visit. Thanks for the link Mel!

You know, these days I've been thinking about adding a place like Stonehenge to one of my stories. I mean, places like that have powerful attraction on us humans, don't they? Who would take the time to actually take some giant rocks and arrange them in a way so that they'll face the sun as it rises over the horizon? I'm sure that a place like that could be nice to have in one of my stories but, maybe I could make it so that the arrangement of stones follows the moon instead of the sun and, maybe have something else in the site that follows the sun's movements like, wood carvings or such. What do you all think about this? neutral

I have a lot of wild terrain in my stories, mountain ranges and forests and stuff. I'm really terrible with geography though so I have trouble with anything aside from 1. Dense foliage grows near water and 2. Rivers flow from high places to low. So I'm actually buying myself a graduation present that's called Campaign Cartographer. It's meant to be used for D&D campaigns but the software looks like it would work well for getting an idea about landmasses.

Oh, another type of Stonehenge-style place to look into for inspiration could be Glastonbury Tor. It's said to be a really holy place and is in a triangle with Stonehenge and another spiritual stone landmark. They're supposed to be on key energy points on the earth or something. ^_^

That's pretty cool Ellia! I mean, the thought of a special program helping with how a map should look like is really cool to me. I've always wondered if my maps are well made and if they seemed realistic enough.

Huh? Glastonbury Tor? I think that's the place the folks at Square-Enix took inspiration from when they made another place called "Brightmoon Tor". See the connection?
Then again, maybe they were just stoned out of their minds, ha-ha-ha! rofl

*Falls to the ground laughing*
Well, I wouldn't know about that. But really, one of the reasons people build those stone monoliths is for calendars, rituals, etc. Modern spiritualists believe they were instinctively or intuitively put on the ley lines of the earth (lines of energy flowing beneath the earth's surface) for the accuracy among other random reasons.
There's actually a stone tablet somewhere with several languages on it that some society put up in case the apocalypse came and the people remaining need guidance. I can only think that they will think the same of that as we do of Stonehenge "Why the heck did they drag rocks out here for?" That would make me laugh!
Also, Fractal Terrains is a great quick-build for a world (where I am too lazy to properly map one out). And my posts have been kinda off topic.
In response to the actual topic, I find any type of forest (especially during specific points of the day) and rivers particularly inspirational for my writing. So few things in this world change so quickly while staying entirely the same. One of the quotes that come to mind when I am surrounded by trees and water is "The world is quiet here, and voices speak."

He-he, nice to know I can make people laugh. mrgreen

Yeah, I always wonder why Stonehenge was made for and if any of the movies or series I've seen have made a good guess about it.

Fractal Terrains, huh? Is that from a website or something?
That's a pretty cool quote Ellia! I suppose forests are a good source of inspiration, yeah. 3nodding
However, I don't find rivers as inspiring for some reason. Maybe it's cuz when I think of the word "rivers" I always think of "Joan Rivers", ha-ha! lol
