January 109

It was a quieter than normal day today. Strange for the Academy....but a welcomed strangeness, nonetheless.

Angel had donned her winter wear, keeping her jacket close to her as she stepped into the unforgiving outside chill. A break away from the other girls and most of the general public of recruits was much needed for her. The dorms were at times quite noisey and made it hard to concentrate or contemplate. She usually found some means to do her work and review, but today she needed the comfort of nature.

Now just outside the main building, she took a seat upon a clear space amidst the snow and pulled out her journal from her jacket. She might make a few thoughtful contemplations today....but first there was the matter of the letter to attend to. She opened the book and pulled out the folded papers, leaning back against the wall as her emerald eyes read over each written word carefully. It brought a half-smile to her face. She only wished she could write exactly what she thought and felt to her parents and have them accept it. As it was, the letter already started off with them hoping that she was more grounded by this point.

"Same old dad..." She muttered to herself, shaking her head a bit as she read on.

An ear piercing scream resounded through the academy, bouncing off the walls and echoing through the open field. Followed by the voice was none other than a familiar green-eyed blonde boy who ran through the snow with his arms flailing wildly about him. He risked a quick glance back, as if expecting to see a monster chasing after him - which was the exact case, actually.

For only a week ago, Lora had been telling him the frightening stories of the snow monster known as Bigfoot. He was as large as a centipede and made of snow, and he stomped around looking for delicious blonde boys to eat. And being the gullible boy that he was, Keiran had believed her. Since then, he had been quite unwilling to go outside, even for training sessions (many of which he had missed due to his fear). Then the Drill Sergeant had sought him out today and dragged him outside, demanding that Keiran get over his fears and face the snow.

And he tried, really he did. But they had been standing at the practice range and before Keiran could even pick up a rifle, a large mound of snow had risen from the ground and growled. So he had bolted out of there, screaming as he tore through the fields trying to escape the big bad Bigfoot. Of course, if he had stuck around, he would've seen the snow fall off the "monster" to reveal a highly amused Nightwing (and not so amused Drill Sergeant). But he hadn't, so he was still running for his life.

Nearing the academy building, Keiran was relieved that he was near safety. Still screaming, he looked back once again, and his foot caught onto a rock. Then he pitched forward, voice dying as he face-planted right into the snow, right in front of Angel.

(( xd Too funny.))

Angel had ceased reading her letter about mid-first page, pausing to pen down her thoughts on her father's unbelievable stuffed-headedness when it came to her and her life. Another reason she was glad she was enrolled in the academy - a chance to take control of her own life. Oh, she would still work hard...that much hadn't changed...but it would be on HER terms.

She had heard the high-pitched scream and had glanced up with a curious gaze, glancing about her to make sure nothing was coming towards her. Judging by the pitch, she expected it to be another (perhaps younger) girl who was running from some unspeakable horror of some sort. Imagine her surprise when she saw it was a boy, and looking quite frightened as though some TRULY unspeakable horror was chasing after him. She was about to ask what happened when she saw his foot hit the rock just before he tripped. She curled up and braced herself as the snow flew from where he had faceplanted.

Once it had quieted for a moment, she dusted off the snow and looked over at him, hoping that he had not struck himself unconscious. She set her journal aside and leaned forward to gently nudge him by his shoulder.

"Hey, are you okay?" She asked in a gentle tone, "What happened?"

Keiran groaned inwardly at the pain reverberating through his head from the impact, though he was fortunate the snow had abosrbed some of the shock - otherwise, he may very well have split his head open taking such a hard fall. As his head cleared enough for him to think, he tensed up as he realized that Bigfoot might have caught up to him and had been the one to trip him!

So when Angel poked him, Keiran rolled onto his back and started screaming again, flailing his arms wildly about in an effort to fend of the attacker. But when he realized he was staring up at the sky, he stopped his movements and only the heavy breathing could be heard. Then he realized that someone had been speaking to him, and he turned his head to look at Angel.

"Did you see Bigfoot?" he asked her in a whisper, still not moving from his position lying in the snow, mostly because his body was still sore from that fall. Keiran lifted his head slightly so that he could look around, and breathed a sigh of relief when nothing else could be seen. Then he looked back at Angel with a friendly smile. "Hello."

When the boy turned over and started screaming again, Angel couldn't help but flinch a bit and pull her hand back. She wondered if that hard fall might have damaged his brain somehow and sent him into shock. She was about ready to pounce him and hold his arms down in an attempt to calm him, but was quite relieved when he stopped. Good thing....pouncing a boy would have been awkward.

When his question came up, she couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. Bigfoot? She thought to herself. Last time she heard about that beast was when her grandfather was telling her of the old legends of the creature. There had been some evidence that it truly existed, along with several sub-species of it, but a lot of people had still discredited it as a hoax. And then how quickly he turned from being a frightened child to a friendly person.......well, it was enough to bring a smile to her face.

"No, I haven't seen Bigfoot....I doubt he'd come here, anyway. Too many wolves might eat him." She shited a little closer and peered down at him, looking over him to make sure he wasn't seriously injured. He seemed familiar....and she recalled seeing him around before, mostly running around either after something or from someone (such as a tyrade of girls who wanted their bras back, which she found particularly funny.) "And hello to you, too. You okay?"

Wolves eating a snow monster? The statement was absurd and seemed like an impossibility to Keiran at first, so he gave Angel a completely confused look. Pushing his back off the ground, he sat up and turned to face her, a curious tilt to his head. But the more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed to be, since wolves drank water - and snow was made of water. That brought another question to mind, which he voiced outloud, though not to Angel in particular. "Can Bigfoot melt?"

A short pause as Keiran considered his own questions, glancing thoughtfully at the wall behind Angel's head. An image of the large snow monster melting crossed his mind, causing him to giggle slightly. But then from the melting snow came a dark shadow which promptly turned into Nightwing - and he had no idea how close he was to the truth with his imagination. Shaking his head to rid himself of the image before the mental Nightwing attacked him, he suddenly seemed to remember that he wasn't alone.

So the Bigfoot incident disappeared from his mind and he turned his attention back to the girl in front of him. Keiran always had trouble keeping his mind one one thing at a time, especially when something else of interest was within sight, Angel being the 'interest'. He'd seen many people stick out their hands when they wanted to make new friends, and he decided now would be the perfect time to find out whether or not it actually worked - then he could try it on the faeries. Friendly smile returning, he offered his hand out to Angel. "I'm Keiran, but you can call me... Keiran."

Angel watched him closely, glad to see him sitting upright. It was a clear sign that he was far better than she had assumed, especially after a fall like that. Than again....sometimes serious injuries took some time to show themselves, particularly concussions. She prayed he didn't have one.

Hearing his question, it too brought her to make a thinking face. Emerald eyes cast upwards for a moment before she picked up a handful of snow, staring at it as she felt it melting even now in her warm palm (which was growing painfully colder as the moments passed.) "I believe the term used for snow-living bigfoot creatures was 'yetti.' " She muttered to herself, smiling as she thought of a great white monster made of snow running after you in full charge....only to suddenly melt into a puddle the moment it stepped into the warm sun. She, too, giggled but aloud. Angel dropped the snow and picked up her notebook, scribbling notes on her thoughts briefly. There was never a wrong time to write down a perfectly good contemplation when you had the means to jot it down.

Catching the movement of his hand in the corner of her eye was what snapped her back to reality. She looked up from her journal of thoughts and smiled softly to him when he introduced himself with the clear intention of a handshake. Closing the notebook, she reached up and took his hand with hers in a gentle, yet firm small handshake. "I'm Angel. Plain and simple. Nice to meet you, Keiran."

It was nice to meet someone who wasn't either grumpy as hell or scared out of their wits, like so many of the recruits seemed to be. She, herself, was taking it all just fine....perhaps better than even her parents thought she would. Oh, she would have to make sure to put that down in writing with her next letter.

Keiran vaguely heard her talking and then scribbling in her notebook, which piqued his curiousity once again. He was about to ask her what was in there when she introduced herself. Keiran blinked several times in an effort to comprehend what she had just said, eyes moving quickly from confusion to awe.

"You're an angel?!" he nearly shouted in his excitement, suddenly turning onto his knees and crawling towards her. His pants were becoming quite soaked by the snow, but he paid them no mind as he pressed his face but a few inches away from hers. Keiran had never seen an angel before and was rather surprised to see that they were more human-like than he had been told. He looked into her green eyes, examined her dark hair, and noted that there wasn't anything different him and her. Maybe they had special powers and that's what differentiated them from normal humans.

"Can you grow wings and fly?" Keiran asked, face bright with excitement but tone completely serious. He didn't see any wings on her at the moment, but maybe the could come out of her shoulders like in some stories he'd heard. Then another thought occured to him and he looked down at the notebook in her hand, pointing at it with wide eyes. "Is that your angel book of secrets?!" And then he glanced around, lowering his voice to a whisper. "I heard the book tells you where Fairyland is."

With his sudden excited outburst, Angel blinked in shock. And when he crawled so close until his face was but a few mere inches away from hers, she almost went cross-eyed and stunned to silence for a moment. He actually thought she said she was an angel?

His onslaught of questions had her speechless for a moment while she tried to comprehend every single one. He's serious... She thought to herself in sudden revelation. When his questions finally stopped, she couldn't help when a rather big smile broke out on her face and she giggled profusely, trying her best not to roll around in the snow with laughter.

"No no, my NAME is Angel. I'm not an actual angel," She finally managed to say through her little tinkling-bell laughter. "As far as I know, that is. I don't have wings and I can't fly. This isn't a book of secrets that tells me how to get to different realms.....but it is special. It's my best friend."

She smiled softly to him and looked down at her journal, at her fresh scribblings and thankful she had it with her. Her sweet, hardcover confidant....

Keiran continued to smile as Angel broke out in laughter, always happy when he made others laugh (even if it was at his own expense, only because he doesn't realize it most of the time). But when she answered his questions, his face fell in disappointment and he rocked back onto his heels, muttering a soft "Oh."

But her next statement confused him greatly as she claimed that the book in her hands was her best friend. Now Keiran had heard his sisters calling their wolves their best friends sometimes, so he had always assumed a best friend was someone who could read your mind. Maybe the book she had was magic and it could read her mind! The awed look returned to his face as he stared intently at the notebook in Angel's hands, as if waiting for it to suddenly break out in song.

"A special book... like magic?" he asked excitedly, eyes shining brightly as he refused to tear his gaze away from the book. Keiran glanced over the cover, noticing nothing special - then again, he had always been told that something didn't have to look different to be special. Except faeries, of course. This brought another thought to his mind. "Do you think it can tell us where Fairyland is?"

Angel frowned a little bit when she saw his face fall as she broke the news that she wasn't all that magical. Her eyes turned down at her book again, softly touching the cover as she took his disappointment to heart. True.....she wasn't that special. Even her parents must have admitted at one point that she wasn't. She tried to be, though. How she worked so hard so she could make them smile and nod with approval.

She was brought out of her downward reverie when he asked if the book was magic. She looked up to him, still appearing rather crestfallen as his other question came. She wasn't sure if she wished she was magic or not...maybe even that wouldn't impress or bring pride to the eyes of her parents. They already thought she was a daydreaming slackabout.

"No, it's not magic...and it can't tell us where Fairyland is." She spoke in a softer, more disheartened tone as she leaned back against the wall once more. "It's my best friend because I can tell it anything....I can ask any question and write down every thought that I have, whether it's real or imagined. It will accept me wholely and unconditionally and never discourage me for asking things that might seem silly to most.

"It doesn't talk to me, but it doesn't have to. It takes in what I write in it and listens, letting me come to my own wonderings and conclusions without interjecting some kind of harsh logic. It's all the things that make a journal...and a friend." She half-smiled as she spoke so fondly of the simple little blank book, of which she had filled already a third of it with her various ponderings, ideas and observations that no one else would ever know.

Keiran frowned when her demeanor changed from a smile to a look of disappointment, and he wondered why that was. He seemed to be meeting a lot of sad girls lately, but he was always too nice to ask why. He knew the reason why he was sad was because his sister had died, but he tried to keep the thought out of his mind as much as possible so that he didn't bring others around him down with his depression.

Maybe she was said that the book couldn't tell them where Fairyland was, Keiran decided when she answered his question. Not knowing where such a wonderful place was is a very sad thing and he had spent many nights not sleeping as he pondered what special places the door to the magical place could be located. Maybe he could cheer her up if they looked for Fairyland together!

"Let's look for Fairyland together then!" he said with a wide grin, glancing down at her book when she called it her friend. Keiran was confused as to why and how a book could be someone's friend, but then again, he had Lora as a friend so he wasn't one to judge.

"And then when we find it, you can tell your friend all about it so we'll never forget where it is!" Keiran continued with sincerity - most people might have taken the statement sarcastically, but he was honest. He respected who and what others chose as friends, nobody how strange it might be. He himself had been called a 'weirdo' several times, but it never phased him - he believed everyone was a 'weirdo' at fault. The ones that showed their strangeness were the brave ones, in his eyes.

"I wish I had such a loyal friend," he suddenly commented, rather absent-mindedly. The way Angel described her notebook, Keiran wanted something like that. Maybe he should get himself a book to write in too.

She wasn't entirely sure how far into her downward fall she had gone, but hearing him suggest that they both find Fairyland made Angel quirk an eyebrow and crack a smile.

This guy was truly something....so innocent, whimsical and carefree. Then again, that could mean he was also hiding something. She had often noticed that people who either seemed withdrawn, frightened or generally carefree were trying to hide something. Angel never pried, though she was always curious. His innocent demeanor did trouble her, though. Innocent could also mean gullable, which left open room for him to be taken advantage of. He seemed so sweet and she prayed that such things had not happened to him.

Hearing his possibly absent-minded remark, she looked to him curiously and smiled sympathetically. "Well...maybe a notebook would do you some good. That way you have a friend like mine, even when your human friends are busy."
PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:20 pm

Keiran felt his own spirits lift at the angel's smile - he never liked to see others sad and did everything he could to make them happy. That was one of the many reasons why he was so optimistic and never allowed a single negative thought to infect his mind.

"Well, I do have this one special friend," he started hesitantly, squinting his eyes in scrutiny as he wondered whether or not Angel could be trust. After all, the last few times he had shown others his 'friend', they had tried to steal him! But the girl seemed nice enough, so Keiran reached into his coat and pulled out a half-foot long plush of a black wolf. He held it up proudly for Angel to see, grinning like a kid in a candy store. "This is Mini! He's my bestest best friend in the whole wide world!"

Ever since his sister had made the plush for him, Keiran was never without it... except during physical drills because Nightwing had tried to eat it last time and he ended up running around the academy screaming. But other than that, he had a special pocket in his winter coat where he kept Mini safe and warm, always with him like a security blanket.

Angel tilted her head curiously when he mentioned, quietly, about his own special friend. She wondered if he would show or tell her, surprised and rather happy when he pulled out the little plushie. Her smile grew bigger as she was introduced to Mini, glancing over him with her ever-observant eyes. It was handmade, to be certain, but well done. Anything that was handmade was special and filled with love, which gave it a spirit of its own....or so it seemed to her, at least.

"He's so cute," She commented, leaning forward to the plushie. "Hello there, Mini. I'm Angel and it's so nice to see that Keiran has such a good friend with him. You keep him safe for me, you hear?" She giggled softly and looked back up to Keiran with sincerity in her eyes.

"You're lucky you have him. I can see that he cares for you a lot. Keep him close as long as you can." There was a hint of nostalgia in her voice as she recalled the day where her father took away her stuffed toys when she was thirteen. The first step to being a practical adult, as he called it. She remembered how she tried to be strong throughout that day, only to fall apart and cry through most of the night. She dearly missed her stuffed dog Ambrose.
