I live near San Francisco so I try to visit often. (Since where I live is boring beyond all belief.) I was walking to a nearby mall with a few friends and I suppose the part of town we were in wasn't the greatest. When we were about to cross the street a car with two guys in it pulls up, start making cat calls, and offering me money! I was infuriated! They thought I was dressed as a french maid! I admit I wear the Gothic Lolita so the black and white would make sense, but what I had on wasn't at all revealing! I got scared so one of my guy friends shooed them off. I felt tempted to poke them in the face with my parasol. Has anyone else had this happen?

Sometimes people yell all sorts of things out the windows of their cars when I'm walking along a main road in my loli gear. I usually can't make out what they're saying though due to their speed/distance. So I just ignore them smile
What happened to you was scary! It was good you had some friends to back you up.
Lolita fashion isn't very well known, so people just guess at what your fashion is by linking it to something they know of. Hence all the French Maid, Little Bo Peep, Nurse, Little House on the Prairie comments (of which I've had the last three XD). Just because they don't know our fashion doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. It's just something new to them that they can't explain.
It's not your fault! Lots of guys I met seem to be attracted (sexually or otherwise) to the lolita outfits I wear even though (or maybe because) very little skin or body shape is shown.
Keep wearing what you like and enjoy it smile Don't let a few ignorant passers-by put you off our beautiful fashion heart

Dear, please do ignore them. I've gotten used to people like that- but I know how you you felt.
People here in the USA are not used to the Lolita style- they all compare it to the book, which is looked down upon. I hate it so much.
On an other note- you are just so lucky to live near San Francisco! They are opening a Baby the Stars Shine Bright there this summer!!

Wow, yikes. People just seem to get the wrong idea sometimes. Dressing nice =/= hooker. >:

I hate it when people make mistakes like that. I can also understand though how sometimes people who don't know about the fashion can get it mixed up with something else. It's like if we don't know about a certain something that we would sometimes come up with something we would recognize that can match up with the description. But they also shouldn't just automatically consider it as something hookerish. v.v
But as they said above, ignore. Lolita isn't all yet known in America so not everyone will be able to identify it correctly. -.-

It may be innocent lolita, but platform shoes and stockings are associated with hookers in the American mind, so I'm not surprised that you were given negative attention. The best thing that Lolis can do is continue to educate all they can about Lolita fashion and culture.

Yes I suppose you are all right. I do not ever plan to stop being the way I am. I may sharpen the end of my parasol for protection though. stare
Thank you for your encouraging words everyone. heart

Stuff like that happens. Either it's "I like your dress." for me... or (at cons most likely) some perv hitting on me. D: The worst part is I got groped at a con wearing lolita. And it wasn't anywhere near provocative.

Actually there are enough creeps in this world that it isn't just Lolitas that have problems with whistles and shouts from obnoxious people. I have problems walking down the road even if I'm NOT wearing my Lolita clothes! My friends call me the creep-magnet. Which doesn't make sense as I always dress so modestly. My mom laughed at me for not wanting a bathing suit unless it had a skirt attached!
Of course, I'm going to a college where all the men seem to be insane. The international students are the only polite ones.

I'm glad nothing really bad has happened to anyone here. I usualy get stopped and asked where the fancy dress party is. That may be because I live in a student town though. I have noever had anything really bad happen. I hope it never does.
