((This RP takes place on the beach about two miles north of the Great Leap Waterfall and the grass area to the west of it. Already in place are Embri and Lachtna; we're interested in having one or two more Kirin join them. <3 Not too many, however; Lachtna in particular gets a bit skittish when there are more than about three others around him.))

User Image It had been about a week since their strange encounter with the being that had called herself Aerithe. In that time, Lachtna had grown rapidly, and no longer looked quite like the colt Embri had first met. Still, he was far from all grown up - his horn was still a bit short, and he looked awkward at his new height instead of majestic. So far, the two younglings had merely been sleeping wherever they ended up at night, with no really safe place to return to and call 'home'.

Currently, he was trying to change that.

Earlier, while wading in the shallows and trying to spot a fish to add to Embri's diet of grasses and other vegetation, he'd taken notice of a small rock formation a bit further along the beach. He harbored a strong suspicion there was a cave hidden there, tucked where he couldn't see it. He'd wanted to investigate right then and there, but... well, Embri would never forgive him, and more than that, wouldn't ever let him forget that he'd left her behind.

Galloping back to where he'd left her, a sparkle in his eyes, he kicked up quite a bit of sand in his path. "Embri! Embri, I have a surprise for you!"

One more go... I know I can reach it!

The young filly was preoccupied with her task at hand. Tantalizingly hanging from the branches above were clusters bright green and gold fruit she knew were sweet and tasty. Problem was, they were out of even Lachtna's reach. The two hungry foals had gotten all of the lower bunches already. Tongue sticking out of the side of her mouth in contemplation, she backed up a few paces, judging the distance. With a sudden lunge Embri gallops forward, kicking off from the ground and beating her wings. Neck outstretched, she manages to catch the lowest branches with her teeth, landing in a heap but with prize in mouth. She turns at the sound of Lachtna's voice with a grin, trotting cockily towards him with the branch held high above the forest brush and tail flagged. Her ears perk up at the mention of a surprise. Well, I've got a surprise of my own! Not totally useless today. The filly was secretly rather chagrined that her bigger friend managed to do most of their foraging. I don't get it.. I eat as much as he does, but still I don't seem to be growing nearly as fast.

No answer? No yell back? That was odd, he thought, blinking and shaking his head. Maybe she was sick, or... when he caught sight of her and the branch she'd managed to get, he stopped in his tracks, jaw dropping. "H-how did you... when did you.... I've been trying to get one of those branches down for the past couple of days!" he finally managed, sounding both amazed and a bit grumpy. "You're short and your wings don't even work yet... how'd you get up there?"

After a moment of thought, he shook his head. "Nevermind. Hey, why don't you leave that for now, and come with me?" he then asked, fairly dancing in impatience. "I think I found something interesting. Would you like to come explore with me? It's further than we've gone before, but I think it's safe. I didn't smell danger, anyway..."

Absently, a small way to let her know he really appreciated what she'd done, he reached out and snagged one of the pieces of fruit between his teeth, tugging it from the branch. As he waited for her response, he ate the treat happily, tail flicking back and forth, ears pricked forward.

The little filly pranced happily in place, setting the branch down on a large rock before pulling off some of the fruit for herself. "I jumped." she said simply, eyes twinkling. "Where there's a will there's a way! Been practicing, my wings are getting stronger." In the mornings, while you sleep half the day away, lazy boy. she kept that thought to herself though, hungrily chewing the sweet round fruit.

"Exploring? I thought we'd explored the whole coast as far as half a day's walk. Did you find something interesting?" It had been one of their first activities, to make sure nothing dangerous was living nearby. The filly perked her ears curiously, chewing another fruit. "I'm game.. better finish those first though, you know what happens if they spoil." One of their first mistakes had been gorging on the fallen sweet fruit, some of which had fermented and given them both horrible headaches the next day. They wouldn't make that mistake again!

He glared down his nose at her, annoyed, then smirked internally. "Maybe as far as you could normally go in half a day." he answered loftily, tossing his head. "Not as far as I could go. You're so short that you're bound to be slower than me, after all." He would pay for that later, he was sure, but for now, he just wanted to push her buttons in repayment for taking away some of his excitement. He quickly took several more pieces of fruit, picking at them as he spoke.

"We stopped right before that slight rise to the north, remember? That's when we turned back and went south again. There weren't any fish nearby today, so I went farther out, and topped it. Just beyond is where I think the cave is." he nodded, then gave a light snort. "Maybe I should have just went to check it out on my own, missy. Next time I will, you just see if I don't." he nodded, then sighed, using his tail to flick at a bug that was nosing about his fruit.

"We should be able to make it there before the sun goes down, with a little bit of time to spare for exploring. If you can move those short little legs of yours fast enough anyway, old souled one." he teased, giving a whicker of amusement.

The little filly leveled her best glare at Lachtna. Of course it wasn't nearly as scary as it should have been, seeing that she had to look up to do it. "It's not my fault you inhale more than a Nrach'nor presented with an all you can eat buffet. You could at least have said thank you." Annoyed because he was mocking her small size Embri snatched up the branch and its remaining fruit and trotted off towards the sandy beach with them to eat alone.

Of all the ungrateful males I could end up with. Hrrmph. My legs are not that short, he's just older than I am. Just wait until I can fly. Then we'll see who gets left behind! She looks longingly up at the birds riding ocean thermals. The last of the fruit disappear down Embri's throat and she tosses the bare branch aside. "Fine, let's go, but this had better be good. I don't fancy spending another night sleeping on the sand, or do you not remember waking up with the tide around our hocks?" True, she hadn't seen any problem with sleeping on the warm sand either that first night, but they'd quickly abandoned it for drier pastures.

That was a dirty trick, he decided, watching her go off on her own. Making him feel guilty and like he was the scum you could find on the rocks revealed when the tide flowed out just wasn't fair; he'd rather if she yelled at him. "You know, having the water wake us up wasn't that bad." he murmured a bit defensively. "At least we didn't get pulled out into the deeper parts, and we got a bath." Then, with a resigned sigh, he walked over to her and nuzzled his muzzle against her neck. "Come on. I'm sure it will be interesting, and that we'll get there and be out with enough time to get to the grass."

There was a moment of silence as he pulled back, eying her carefully as he tried to figure out if she actually would answer. "What's a... a Nrad... Nrach... that thing you mentioned?" he questioned, stumbling over the unfamiliar word. "Is that another one of your weird before things? Or did you just dream it up the night we ate the bad fruit?" He'd had terribly strange dreams then, after all, including one where he was a large fish, bigger even than a Kirin, swimming in an alien underwater world. Gently, he nudged her again then, trying to get her to start along - he really, really wanted to see if there was indeed a cave, and if it was one where they could spend nights when the weather got bad.

"Nrach'nor... those bristly fat herbivores that are always rooting around in the leaves looking for food. Don't know why, but they look like Nrach'nors to me."
Embri tosses her head and shies away from Lachtna's nuzzle, still irked. Without another word she sets off towards the northern rise.

Sand plumed up behind the filly's hooves as she pushed off the ground and beat her wings, bounding along like a deer. Why does he have to swing between extremes? Always either the laid back, gentle protector or the cocky, arrogant snob. Never anything in between. Maybe it's just the fact he's stuck in the middle, neither foal nor adult. With a mental sigh, she gives her head a slight shake. Hrmph. Let him run and catch up, Mr. Long Legs surely won't have any problem overtaking such a "small" filly as I.

The gently undulating seagrass rustled pleasantly, waving back and forth in the breeze. The sand was hot, and Embri was glad she spent a minimal amount of time with her hooves in contact with it. Nary a cloud marred the crystal blue sky, though that meant little here on the coast, for storms were known to sweep up with little warning. For now, at least, the weather was beautiful, a good crisp breeze and warm sunshine.

After spending most of the day wandering in search of food, then taking a gallop back to their impromptu meeting place, Lachtna wasn't quite at his best when it came to speed and stamina. And, at the moment, he was glad of it - it made his controlled canter after the filly look a little less faked, and more as if he really were laboring to catch up to her. When he did, he stayed at her side instead of dashing ahead, enjoying the way the exercise made his muscles ache slightly. "If we keep up at this rate, we'll get there in no time." he told her, sounding rather pleased with the idea. Already, the hill to the north seemed much closer, though he knew that was probably just his imagination.

"Embri..." he started after a moment, then stopped again, thinking it was better to struggle through an apology after the running was over. She was still mad at him, it seemed, and he didn't really know why; it would be hard enough when he could devote his whole attention to the task, let alone while he was trying to breathe properly and keep his hooves from tangling up in each other.

"Race you to that boulder ahead!" he shouted instead of continuing on with his awkward original sentence. Then he spurred himself on a bit more, passing her, being careful not to kick sand up into her face as he ran. Maybe by the time he got there, he'd have figured out what to say.

If not, it would probably take a good five times more of that distance to reach and climb the rise. Surely that would give him enough time.

The little filly flicked her ears back at the sound of Lachtna's approach, his regular hoofbeats keeping time with her own.

Thump-thumpity clip-clopity thump-thumpity clip-clopity

Embri let her mind wander. He never mentions Aerithe ... not once, since that day... I'm not sure it was even real, myself. Maybe that's why. He's so grounded in the present, the now. No matter where I go or what I do, something, a sound, a smell, the way something feels, reminds me of the ... other place. No matter which way you look at it, we're as different as can be. Be Kirin... what is that supposed to mean, be Kirin? I don't know *how* to be Kirin.

Lachtna's surprise challenge startled Embri out of her reverie, and she blinked owlishly as the bigger colt dashed past her. As he ran past, his long creamy tail whipped past her muzzle, ticklish and fluffy. "A race, hm? Well, I can't match you in power... but I bet I can beat you in strategy!"

The sand dune they were climbing was not entirely sand. The long shoulder where it met the sand grass and forest beyond was dotted with good sized rocks, big enough for a nimble set of tiny hooves to land on. Slogging through the loose silica was hard work, and Embri had better ideas. She quickly hopped to the nearest rock, pushing off and gliding towards the next higher one. Leapfrogging along the rocks, she trailed Lachtna but managed to keep up.

"H-hey!" he shouted when he looked back on hearing her first landing, blinking in surprise. "That's cheating!" Well, maybe it wasn't, not really, but... it certainly wasn't fair! He knew that, with his longer legs and more powerful build, he could probably manage to do the same, but he wouldn't now. Not now that she'd been the one to start it. No sirree. He'd do it his own way, and he'd still beat her, and that would show her... Soon, he was working too hard to form a coherent thought. The sand trickled down under his hooves, making it difficult for him to get firm footing, and he was continuously almost tripping.

By the time they'd gotten almost to the top of the dune - and the boulder - he was panting, and Embri was very close to overtaking him. "Un...fair!" he gasped once more, then gave one last surge of strength, jumping the last few feet. He never did see whether he got there first or not, because as soon as his hooves hit the ground, he plopped down to the sand to take a rest...

And promptly overbalanced, taking a tumble down the other side of the dune.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:12 pm

"Lachtna!" Embri yelled and leaped over the last rock, watching the half grown stallion tumble over the sandy ridge and down the other side of the dune, out of sight. She waded through the sand, pawing for traction while trying to not suffer the same fate.

Stupid, hard headed male! Why does competition drive every other sane thought from their heads? Embri chided silently, hoping at the same time he had come to no serious harm. Carefully she works her way over the top of the dune, looking down to see what had become of Lachtna.

Fortunately, he didn't seem too badly hurt, though perhaps in shock... but that might not have been from the fall at all.

For, rising in front of him in a great curving arc was a gigantic rib bone of some huge animal almost picked clean - the sea birds perched atop it and the crabs slowly gathering along where it rested against the sand would surely finish the job soon. The male was staring up at it in open mouthed wonder, eyes wide and full of mixed awe and fear. "E-embri?" he managed to choke out after a moment. "This, um, wasn't here earlier, I don't think. If it was, I didn't notice... and I would have noticed."

He gulped, then pulled his eyes from the sight to look up at the filly, snorting. "I wonder what... what it could have belonged to..." One of the giant fish he'd dreamed he'd been flashed through his mind, but no. That was impossible. There couldn't be a fish bigger than a Kirin... but then, what had this massive bone come from?
PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:58 pm

Soft feathers and a gust of sea breeze lend the filly enough lift to glide down to Lachtna, giving the carcass a wide berth. She lands almost neatly, stumbling a little in the soft footing of the sandy ground. After giving Lachtna a visual once over and shaking her head almost imperceptibly, Embri turns to look at the massive rib.

"Now that is odd... and rather ... stinky." The filly wrinkles her nose distastefully, not wanting anything to do with rotting flesh. She trots off to one side, putting herself upwind. "Whatever it was, it was ... really really big. Where is the rest of it, you suppose? It's quite strange there's only one bone, usually there's a partial carcass or a full body... " The forest and beach were not always as idealic as they looked. Hunters still had to eat, predators rarely bothered taking the lean pickings of their kill with them. They disappeared quickly enough as other creatures disposed of the remains.

He'd forgotten their earlier fight now, along with the tumble he'd taken, and her worry for him - no, his entire focus was fixed on this bone. "I bet it came from the water." he murmured, shaking his head in wonder. "I mean... I've never seen anything as strange as this. Except for... well..." he fidgeted around mentioning Aerithe's name, skirting it as someone would any 'embarrassing' topic of conversation.

"It isn't that stinky, you know. Most of the meat's gone... and I wonder if the rest of it will be up here by the time we come back through. We'll have to keep an eye out, won't we?" He sounded excited and anxious, and fairly pranced as he made his way around the large bone, eyes not leaving it again. He wanted to find more of it, to see the skull and whatever else would wash up, wanted to try and imagine a creature of such impossible bulk and girth. With only this much, his brain just wouldn't stretch that far.

"Come on... we better keep walking. We're almost there..." he finally murmured reluctantly, sighing heavily. "I'll come back tomorrow and hope it's still here, since you think it's stinky. If I find anything interesting that isn't, I can bring it back, after all..."
