Like the topic says.
I love playing what I know so far, which is a F G and A....yeah. There's only 3 French Horns in the class that I'm in right now, including me, and oneof those isn't really good and the other one is rather kind of new like me, except he's better because he played trumpet before he played french horn, I played flute. I was hoping for tips and scales and anything that could help me really because I'm obviously not learning much in there currently. Please and thanks to anyone out there. ^.^

I would recommend getting a teacher right now if you have no one to really help you. Do you have scale charts and fingerings with you at least? what kind of horn do you have? Is it a single or a double? if I were you I would practice lots of long tones for now. Start really quiet, then slowly crecendo do as loud as you can play and hold that as long as you can. Do that with all the notes you know and eventually your lip muscles will get stronger and you will be able to play higher notes easier.

Thanks. I have fingering charts. I don't think I have scales. How do I know if it's single or double? It's the schools french horn. Alright thanks I'll do so.

if its a double horn it'll have a trigger key (which is where the thumb is) if you have a double horn (sorry to confuse you) then after A is a different fingering chart.

*Points at double you posted two times* sweatdrop Well mine doesn't have the thumb part. One of the other french horn players told me that, I just didn't know it was single or double.

ya if you have a thumb key (or a trigger) then pressing that will have your horn go from the key of F to B flat. Its good you have a single horn though because thats what most beginners start on.

i would recommend that you go out and buy a PVC pipe connector or fitting or whatever they call those? confused any way the point is that if you breath through it it will help stretch out your diaphragm and other musicals in your lungs. (trust me, if you do this right then it really helps you learn how too breath better). my horn teacher in eighth grade used this method to help me breath better.
also i would recommend that, if you can, get a horn teacher as soon as possible. they really help! smile my horn teacher was evil but she helped me become a better player so it was worth it.
if i were you i would ask my band director for a copy of the B flat, C and F concert scales, along with a fingering chart. then i would find time to practice with one of the other horn players and memorize those scales and most importantly the sounds and fingerings of those notes.
also it would be good for you to know if you have a B flat or F horn.
by the way a double horn is one that combines a B flat and f horn into one package. its like 2 instruments in one. good luck with the horn and i hope my advice helps!! smile

Learn and practice your scales! they may sound dumb or stupid and everyone will tell you that but you'll find that they come up! I can't emphasize enough for you to learn them!!!!!!!!

I won't look dumb because the only person that's attempting to teach me can't play either and doesn't know his scales. I don't know what notes they start on though. B flat concert? E flat? A flat? C? I think that's about all the major scales we play? Do you know the starting notes for them?

They let me borrow an Essentials Book from the school so I'm going to work hard with that. I actually started playing a song today which made me feel ultimatly good! :3

Bb concert - start on F Eb concert - on Bb Ab concert - on Eb C concert - start on G Um, I think that's right but I could be wrong. Remember, you always have one less flat and one more sharp than the flutes, trombones and tuba.....and any other C instrument.
