Do you like Traditional Irish Music?
  Absolutely!
Nah, I prefer modern Irish bands.
  I listen to both, actually.

No Irish Guild would be complete without a place to discuss Irish Music!

In this thread, you may post anything related to the topic, be it lyrics, links to musicians, your own songs, etc. Got any recommendations? Tell us!

I guess I'll start off.

I've always been a huge fan of Loreena Mckennitt, ever since I heard her music as a young girl. I don't think I've met anyone who's heard her music and not liked at least some of it.

Also, I love the Choral group Anuna. I wish I could hear them perform, that they'd tour either the US or Canada. heart I know they've done performances with Riverdance in the past.

That's not the extent of the groups I like, but I don't want to ramble on. whee

There is a great group out there called Dervish - I got to hear them play a few years ago for a St. Patrick's day concert in my home town, and they're great.

I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a good band that does traditional Irish music.

Sweet! Thanks. I also got to hear a Traditional Irish band first hand back home. The group's name is Teada. I really enjoyed myself, and they're quite talented.

Another band I can think of off the top of my head is Cruiskeen, but it's a little harder to find info about them - plus I've only heard the one song by them, which was Finnegan's Wake.

But here's what Owl Records has to say:

I love Irish pub songs, that you can sing along to. There's an Irish singer named Harry O'Donahue that my family goes to see play a lot, and he plays a lot of fun Irish songs, like the Old Dunn Cow, Black Velvet Band, Whiskey in the Jar, Mick MacGuire, the Flower Seller and songs like that. I could listen to songs like this all night, and often do when I go see him! Good times. Audience participation is fun!

The Chieftains, Saw Doctors and Great Big Sea are the traditional irish bands I have on my playlist, they make cool-y-o music. *nodnod*
I also like the recent folk/punk bands, including Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.
yush.

I listen to a bit of both, at my school (scottish founded) they have a pipe band, and although they play mostly Scottish Based Pipe Tunes, when they do the big performances for like sport days, alot of the mid music and intro music before and after songs is Irish which i find kick a**.

As for Modern Bands, I dont listen to alot of music that isnt of a certian style, clal me narrow minded, but its what i enjoy.

Oh, not too much more than a year, because it was sometime after I moved into my apartment, which was only just a year ago.

Probably right around this time, actually. But yeah, I love it when people pass along musical gems to me.

I'm a big fan of a band called Gaelic Storm. And I know I'm probably going to get kicked in the shins for saying they're better than Flogging Molly, but they're better than Flogging Molly (Don't get me wrong. I like Flogging Molly a lot.)You've probably heard them, but not heard OF them. They were the party band in "Titanic". During the big spinny scene that everyone copied for a long time. xp

There's a huge Irish festival every summer around Lughnasa that features a bunch of great Irish music in Dublin, Ohio. Everyone from Dublin, Ireland makes fun of it big time. Cause it's just recently been voted a wet precinct ("It's about bloody damn well time, you pansy excuses for Irishmen!" -Bohla's boro player as he slams a Guinness).

I'm pretty much into traditional stuff, like The Cheiftains, Bohla, Gaelic Storm, Cherish the Ladies, Celtic Woman, the like, but I'm not gonna lie to you. I've got some Bad Haggis on my playlist.

Thin on top. They play every summer in Bundorn.

Great little band for whenever you want to just relax and have fun. <3
