Moloch walked through the forest like a sleep walker, heading for the clearing where he had been meeting with Avantasia every couple nights for a good few weeks. She was... oh, she was wonderful, and he didn't care what Kalida had to say. He flicked his ears back at the thought of Kalida's disapproval, but he wasn't a fool. Oh no. And he needed a queen, somebody to bear him good, strong heirs.

Avantasia was that queen. And she was so much more.

Kalida wouldn't ruin this night for him. Nobody would. It would just be him and his sweet, sweet Avantasia. And if anybody dared disturb them... well. It had been too long since his last fight.

Vidar was scouting an area he thought he saw someone lurking around. This thing has been bugging him for some time and he wanted to make sure he there were no spies and that his mind played a trick oh him. He was surprised when he saw Moloch not to far from him walking like a sleep walker. It seemed he didn't notice him as he approached from behind.

'' Lord Moloch. ''

He called out not just to get his attention but to see if he was really sleep walking for that fact could clear the mystery of someone lurking in this area.

Moloch froze as he heard Vidar's voice. Vidar, of all the stars! His least favorite, but still Avantasia's brother... Avantasia! And Vidar didn't know. How would he react, if he knew about Moloch's relationship with his sister. Moloch shivered, half tempted to tell him, to see him squirm, but he needed loyal followers if he was to become truly powerful. Rule the land, all of the other stars...

"Vidar," he said politely, turning to face him. Avantasia would have to wait, it wouldn't do to raise suspicions in her brother's mind. At least not yet.

So he wasnt sleepwalking. That was good for it would be a problem if he was. But there was still a question of that shadow he thought he saw.

'' I appologise for asking but do you usually roam around here at night? ''

If he got a positive answer than he could relax a little for if there was no spy then there was no danger for the heard. And if Moloch usually roamed in these parts well they had a better protection.

Moloch stiffened. So he knows. No! Don't lose your head, he wouldn't be this calm if he did. You and his sister...

"Yes," he said. "I like to... survey my dominions, see that all is well. I suppose you were doing the same?"

Good. Turn the focus away from yourself. And just hope Avantasia doesn't come looking for you.

'' Yes. I thought I saw someone sneak around here but I was afraid that it was a spy. I'm so much calmer to know it was you. Or did you see someone perhaps? ''

He thought he sensed stiffness in Moloch's voice. Maybe he startled him.The only thought of doing so amuzed him and if he would only care maybe he would allow himself to smirk and tease him a little. Instead he remained as he was till now with no expression of any feelings on his face.

"I commend you on your vigilance," Moloch said, trying to hide his increasing nervousness, "and no, I haven't seen anyone else around here."

'' It is my duty to see that this heard is safe. I shall bother you no longer. ''

Vidar bowed his head and prepared to leave when out of no where with a rustle behind her and in haste Avantasia came out of the bushes. Vidar looked at her in confusement for he thought that he left his sister fast asleep. What he didn't know is that Avantasia came to warn Moloch that her brother was coming to inspect the place where they have been meeting.

'' Avantasia? ''

''Mol... oh Vidar!''

Was all she managed to say while her brain was storming to find some good explanation. She tried to talk back Vidar from coming here and as usual pretended to sleep waiting fer her brother to be in deep sleep before she would sneak away. But tonight Vidar just couldn't leave this suspicion he had. She froze when she spotted Moloch also there and a wide smile formed on her face. This is going to be a really tough one. She knew her brother and he always seemed to see through her lies.

Good. Leave now. Leave leave leave - crap. Moloch suppressed a groan, and thought quickly, trying to salvage the situation.

"I see it's a restless night," he said, perhaps a trifle too quickly, "if so many of us have trouble sleeping. But we are the shadow herd, after all. How goes it, Avantasia?" Avantasia, such a beautiful name. Fit for a queen. He smiled unconsciously.

A smile? Moloch smiled?! This was first time that Vidar saw Moloch smile without making some grim threat. He noticed his sister has been missing from time to time and that she would bring unknown faint smell with her when she returned. And ideas that explained these things crossed his mind overflowing him with disgust. It just could not be true. Narrowing his eyes he looked at Avantasia and her eyes said more than he wanted to know. He turned his head back to Moloch.

'' You! What have you done! ''

Avantasia could lie perfectly well and anyone would believe her without doubting. But her brother knew her too well. There were faint chances that she could convince him if they were alone but she knew Moloch was hasty and his flaming temper wouldn't let him stay calm for long.

'' Now dear brother. Let's not jump to conclusions. I just couldn't find you when I woke up and I felt lonely by my self so I went searching for you. ''

She looked nervously at Moloch fearing his reaction to this all.

'' It is late and we should leave our Lord to rest... ''

Rage. It was a feeling Moloch understood well, and under different circumstances he might have attacked Vidar or exiled him. Anything to keep such a loose cannon away from his herd. But Avantasia... Avantasia would never forgive him. He couldn't do it. For the sake of Avantasia, he was willing to deal with Vidar. Kalida was right! How could a mere mare have so much power over him? Blinded. He trembled with indecision.

"Yes, rest," Moloch said, quickly seizing on Avantasia's excuse. "It has been a long day and tomorrow will be longer still." Recovering quickly, he gave Vidar a long, measuring look. "I lead this herd. And you?"

Risky, risky. But if it was going to come to a fight, now was the time. Now, before things got to far. Now, while Avantasia was here. Someone to insure cooler heads prevailed. Blinded, biased... yes, he was both of those things. But tonight he would know. He would know if Avantasia stood by him, and how firmly. And he would also know something equally important: how good she was at stopping fights. For, despite all the risk and conflict involved, Moloch still wanted Avantasia as his queen. And if she was to take such a place by his side, she had best be a wise and capable leader. Devoted to him and his cause, more help than hindrance. A strong mother for his heirs. Tonight... tonight would be the deciding factor.

'' You haven't answered my question... ''

And than it struck him. The faint smell his sister would occasionally bring with her was Moloch's. This low breed went to far and Vidar wasn't going to let it continue. The thing he feared the most happened despite his efforts to keep his sister in his sight all the time. They were supposed to stay only for short period of time here to rest and than continue they're own way.

'' You are right my lord. We have troubled you long enough and we shall take our leave early in the morning. We do appreciate you're hospitality to this point. ''

With that said Vidar took his leave stopping only to look why his sister isn't following him.

'' Avantasia?! ''

Aantasia stood still with her heart beating faster and faster as she heard every word her brother spoke. How was she going to make this right. And although she wanted to please her older brother she couldn't go against her heart. And after all maybe it was time to confirm his suspicions she believed he had. After all she won't able to hide her condition for long any more.

'' I can not leave Vidar. Nor do I wish to. ''

She only begged her voice not to betray her when she announces news even Moloch had no knowledge about so she spoke softly.

'' You should be happy for me dear brother. I am expecting and you shall soon be uncle once more. ''

Vidar knew even before she spoke. He could see it in her eyes and it froze him. For first time in a long time his face made expression. Angry expression with grin showing his snow white fangs.

'' Moloch you stupid fool. She is not well. How could you have done something like this. ''

This was situation he couldn't fix. Although he wished to leave this place he couldn't leave his sister behind. Especially while Kalida was part of this heard too.

He wanted to leave! Moloch prepared himself to invoke the oath of loyalty Vidar and Avantasia had sworn, but before he had a chance, Avantasia spoke.

Pregnant? He couldn't believe his ears. Already? He was going to be a father? His mind stopped, looped back to what she had said, searched for other possible meanings, and looped back once more. He was going to be a father? All that he had hoped for was in his grasp!

"Why," he gasped, "what's wrong?" He turned to Avantasia. Is she was not well, the babies would die, and she would die, and he would be alone once more. He could not allow such a thing to happen; he needed, even wanted and loved, this queen of his. And equally did he need and want heirs.

'' What is wrong with her? Have you really never noticed? ''

Vidar looked at Moloch with no expression on his face just a cold look in his eye. Could it really be that he never noticed two sides of Avantasia. A calm and fragile mask that hides insanity born from lost of her mate and first foal. That fool didn't notice she was more dangerous than she looked.

'' Vidar please stop speaking non-senses. There is nothing wrong with me. ''

Avantasia spoke with calm voice like all this was family joke no one would take serious.

'' Besides it was about time I got offspring. I am not getting any younger you know. ''

Her eyes sparked in strange glow for a moment and Vidar knew the storms raged inside her twisting her perception of things again while her perfect mask showed a memory of happiness from the past.

'' Are you sure you are up to the task that comes with responsibility? ''

"She has seemed well enough until now," he said flatly, eying Vidar. The fool! If he had something to say, why not say it? And to wait until now!

He eyed Avantasia, then Vidar, red eyes flickering between the two. Yes. There was something the matter - but what? What secret were they hiding?

Moloch could be impulsive, foolish. Blinded by ambition. But that didn't mean he was stupid.

"Avantasia," he said gently, "if there is anything the matter, you only need tell me." He smiled slightly, trying to draw out her trust. And if she wouldn't talk, perhaps Vidar would, angered by Moloch seemingly ignoring him once again.

But he wasn't. He was all ears for Vidar. As the old saying went, keep yours friends close and your enemies closer.
