January 109

The second Oak Tree. The large tree grew close to the edge of White Shadow's training area, well out of the way of harm, but close enough so that everyone could enjoy it. It was a popular spot, one taken for granted because of its large branches and its location, and no one had ever thanked the Tree. Not to common knowledge anyways. It was so easy to take advantage of things when you see them everyday, especially when they're inanimate, non-sentient objects.

/You're going to play that piece of metal?/ "Its called a Flute. And yes, I am going to play it. Lordy-lou Feather, you've heard me play the Piccolo before." /Yes. But that thing was at least half the size of this thing. You don't have enough wind in your chest to play it!/ "I admit I'm a little rusty, but I certainly do have enough wind to play it, thank you every much!" Glancing up from her lap, the young Rider made a face at her Wolf, taking a swat at the feathers protruding from the Wolf's broach. "Let me be Feather. Go find Mist and teach her something, I gave Chehero the day off, but the pup needs to learn more." /Hmph!/

Watching as her Wolf left her side to trot away with her nose in the air, Vala sighed before attaching the foot joint to the rest of the flute. It was true, she had been favoring her Piccolo recently, its small stature much more easy to carry around than her normal Soprano flute. Lifting the lip plate to her mouth as she closed her eyes, Vala drew in a breath before blowing it out in a stream, moving her fingers over the keys in a simple 'hot cross buns' to warm up. Running through the practice song twice, the Private deftly switched over to a song her Grandmother had left behind for her in one of her old books. Fauré Fantasie had been passed down from generation to in her family, and Vala knew from the notes on the music sheet, it had been composed by a man named Gabriel Fauré.

Fingers tightening in the black wolf's fur, Alister let out a breath watching it rise as a puff in the cold air and not for the first time, cursed Twilight's furry little soul. Of course such a mental curse was met with an amused snort from the wolf under him as she bounded over the last snowy blockade before slowing to a trot as they passed through the fort's gates. They'd both been bored, which was how Twilight had convinced him to leave the warmth of his nest to do a bit of wandering. Of course...he hadn't expected that wandering to lead him not only down to the one lake he never wanted to see again, but also to an even more unexpected spot. His cousin's grave.

Twilight hadn't been too happy about the final destination either but he'd simply stayed there staring at the sad little dead flowers near the grave marker. The flowers would bloom again once the spring rolled around, he knew that. That didn't mean the knowledge had stopped his mood from severely darkening and now as he tightened the strap that held his violin case on his back, Alister scowled. After that little visit he'd had half the mind to head into the city and rip at his aunt...again for letting the girl go to the Academy. She was always sick, always trying to be brave and gods be damned quite possibly the only member of his family that he actually liked.

You're pulling my fur out... Huffing the wolf looked over her shoulder at her annoyed rider and pondered kicking the man off in the snow. Of course such actions would no doubt result in her getting shot at. Not that she could fully blame him for being annoyed and a little homocidal. If you want to take out some fustration go play that violin of yours...or go shoot at some targets for a while...and no not living ones either.

Not even bothering to answer Twilight, Alister merely sighed and kept his temper in check. No need to snap at Twilight...she'd merely suggested the idea nothing more, thus not deserving of any abuse. That just left one thing for him to do since the wolf had already crushed his hopes of getting to shoot at some of the recruits, take up a perch some where and grind his annoyance out on the violin. And if that didn't work there was always the option of locking up in his room for the rest of the day.

That in mind, he nudged the wolf toward the old Oak tree, still too far away to hear the music drifting from beneath it...

--- Rubbing the sides of her muzzle on the snow to freeze and remove the blood that had collected on her lips, Feathershroud lifted her nose in mid stroke as she picked up another wolf's scent. After successfully sweeping all of the rabbit's uneaten remains into the hole she had dug and buried it, the Gamma padded out from the tree line to watch the dark wolf and her rider draw closer. She had seen Twilight from time to time, but never talked with the female personally, other than communication in battle. Flicking her tail as she decided on what she felt like doing, Feathershroud pulled out into the deeper snow, slowly making her way at an angle to intercept the wolf and Rider if they intended to stop near by. She was bored, and hopefully Twilight felt like talking... ---

Unaware of the oncoming company, Vala continued to play her tribute to the tree. The sun had come out from behind the cloud banks for the first time in days, and the shadows of the leaves on her legs reminded the Private of days that had long since past. When her mother had shifted her attentions onto her brother because of his talent in painting, Vala had moved to her father, helping him whenever she could with the farming. Though usually her range of help was feeding the smaller animals and playing her flute for her dad and the others he worked with. It wasn't much help, but everyone had thanked her for it, laughing in good sport when she blushed and ran away.

Faltering in her breath as an idea distracted her, the Private happily filed it away for future use. Visiting her parents sounded like fun, she hadn't seen them in forever, and she really wanted to see her little brother. Despite the fact he was only five years younger than she was, he was still a little kid in her mind. Shaking her head slightly, Vala lifted the Flute to her lips again, picking up Fauré Fantasie from where she had stopped. The song was almost done and she was determined to finish it.

Movement from the corner of her eye caught her attention and Twilight tilted her head to one side for a moment considering whether or not to look before giving into the former and turning her head just enough to see Feathershroud making her way toward them. The other wolf was riderless, but there was also the faint scent of blood in the air, a rabbit. The other gamma had went hunting alone then. Bobbing her head in greeting, Twilight gave a faint smile slowing to allow the red wolf to draw near. "Greetings Feathershroud." she said lightly before the first drifting notes of a flute reached her ears. Cocking her head to one side she gave a rumbling growl that bore nothing but pure curiosity. "Someone else seems to have taken an interest in music..." she mused out loud, flicking her tail as her rider stiffened slightly.

Twilight's temporary stop puzzled him for a moment until he saw just what the wolf was looking at. Another wolf, a red one. Frowning slightly at the sight of the gamma, his mind finally registered just which wolf it was. Feathershroud. If only he could remember her rider's name. Letting out a sigh he shrugged it off. He'd probably remember the name later on, but at the moment there was no point in even worrying about it.

Twilight's off hand comment about someone else and music made him stiffen a bit even if he couldn't catch the sound. Someone else with an affinity for music...? Maybe this day would turn out well yet.

-- /Greetings Twilight./ Adjusting her gait to match that of the other female's, Feathershroud gave the Wolf's Rider a tilted glance before returning her attention back onto Twilight. Her ears moving to catch the mentioned tune, the burgundy Female pulled back her lips in amusement. /That is my Vala. She plays a piece of metal called a Flute. Right now, she's playing a tribute to the oak tree./ Arching her neck slightly, she continued. /At least humans are starting to appreciate the Forest./

With each step she took, the feathers on her broach bounced a little, but their movement was familiar therefore went unnoticed. /Does Your's play then? Before you mentioned someone else having an affinity for music./ --

Holding the last note, Vala lowered the flute a few moments later, inhaling freely. As she leaned back, Vala let the head of her flue rest against her chest, closing her eyes with a sigh. Although sun was making it warmer, it was still nippy in the shade, forcing the Private to snuggle farther into her jacket. She would play another song in a moment, but for now, she settled down to watch the leaves swirl out of her reach. "Feather just needs to chill a little..."
