Does anyone know where I can find a good quote from the book describing Erik's appearance? Bibliomania's search function is down and I can't find my book. sweatdrop

There's a version of the book online, but right now I'm too lazy to find it. I would type it up, but I don't know how much time I have. For the gist of it, they never really give a solid description of what he looks like, but Christine speaks of his "Dead flesh" and "Dead hands". He does not have lips or a nose, and he's got four patches of hair on his head, but that's all that's strictly described. Otherwise, he just looks generally like a corpse, and has very cold skin. The descriptions are scattered about the book, so it's not exactly a one-place thing.

Don't know if that helps or not, seeing as to the fact that you wanted a quote, but ehh....*Shrug*

Actually, Erik had a nose... When the managers see him for the first time, they say that he has no nose, but then Leroux said that they were mistaken, since his skin/mask was so white that the luminosity kept them from seeing it. Well, that's what I remember from his nose-related descriptions, I hope I'm not wrong.

Hmm, I could have sworn he wasn't supposed to have a nose. Everybody draws him without a nose, and comment on it and stuff. I'll have to read the thing again to find out for sure....

I wish I had the book, so I could be sure. Since I watched the movie first, the thought of an extremely ugly Erik used to scare me... at first. So I made sure to read Leroux's descriptions very carefully. Though now I don't care about his appearance. He's ugly, but I still love him. I just can't take the corpse smell. *shivers*

Anyway, I'm not that sure about this, after so many people saying he's noseless and stuff. ><

Yep. I used to be a teratophobe (scared of deformed monstrous people) and now I'm a teratophiliac. Strange how your fears can turn into your desires.

And yeah, the smell would bother me. Which is why I go for Winslow. *Snicker* The worst that can get is sweaty leather. *Twitch*

OOOOOH!!!!! I HAVE A PICTURE!!!!! (from the book cover actually.) the link is

http://www.phantomoftheopera.com/uploads/cavt43188400e30f5.jpg

consider this: Erik had to have had lips, or 1: he could not have kissed Christine, 2: have you ever tried to talk without touching yours lips together? It's pretty much impossible. Also, what it said about Erik not having a nose was that the managers may have mistaken shinyness for transparency, because people would have their noses replaced with false ones (LIKE MICHAEL JACKSON!!!!! xd ) and it was shiny because it was made of synthetic products. Finally, about the corpse smell, it actually said "smell of death," which could have just as easily been the smell of oriental lilies (only someone who's ever been to a traditional funeral would know what I mean) because the lilies are the flowers associated with death. I actually really like that smell.

And thatnks, Alexis Of Shadow, for telling me why I think Erik is gorgeous. Apparently, I am a teratophiliac too!

I don't think Leroux meant that he was lipless, it was just that his face was so badly deformed that the lips couldn't be distinguished from his skin. He probably had very, very small lips, so it looked like he had none. I know some people like that.

Yes, that's what I was talking about! So Erik did have a nose, but it was artificial.

I really don't think that the smell of death was asociated with the smell of lilies. When I think smell of death, I think smell of a degenerating corpse, not funeral flowers. And I think that some characters said that Erik's smell was disgusting at certain points, so he really couldn't smell like a flower.

Think of it this way: The book took place in the mid 19th century, a time when hygiene, to put it lightly, was not so great. If you went back in time, you would be pretty grossed out by the smell of the streets in Paris. If Erik kept himself clean, he would have smelled pretty disgusting to someone who lived their whole life used to the smell of dirty people (that sounds really funny, I know). Christine was the one who said that Erik smelled of death, but she would not know what a rotting corpse smelled like, since the only time that it can be proved that she came in contact with a corpse was at her father's wake and funeral. At funeral's, the body's were scented and cleaned up. Since Erik spent many years in Persia, a place where hygiene was much better on the whole, he would probably still keep himself clean, at least to make up for looking dead. Christine would have smelled an alien smell to her, and automatically thought of her father's funeral. So would have anyone else who had ever been at a funeral.

Yay! Teratophiliacs of the world unite.

And yes, Erik was supposed to have a fake nose. But I meant, naturally, he didn't have one. Eheh.

Ruenia, people in Paris did smell bad back in the 19th century, but they used lots of perfume to make up for it. And even though you probably never smelled a rotting corpse, you would should have an idea of what it would be like. Christine would never think that a "clean" smell was bad, because it would be like the smell of perfume or soap, which was considered good, since the French used it to make up for their bad smell...

Argh, my post was so confusing.

well, anyway, everyone's entitled to their own opinions, and until something is proven about how Erik smells, we'll just have our own feelings about how he smells. Also, remember, when Christine smelled his hands, she was not only terrified, she was drugged, too! Who KNOWS what crazy thoughts were going through her head! blaugh
