Okay, people. Another ramble about a jerk at the store.
Sooo... I went to the music store, and they had this special edition $5,000 Strat locked up in a glass case. So I asked to play it. The salesman was treating me like some kind of n00b and tells me, "This is more for serious guitarists. Not really for beginners. But I'll take it out and show it to you", and I was like "No, I want to play it". Finally he gave in and hooked me up to an amp and gave me a pick. So I shredded on it for about 2 or 3 minutes, and the salesman turns up and goes, "You know, you shouldn't strum it so hard with the pick... you could damage the finish" and starts explaining to me how picks can scratch guitars. Uh, the damn pick wasn't getting anywhere NEAR the finish.
Then this second salesperson turns up and snaps at me, "What's your interest in this guitar?" I answered, "Just trying it out", so he goes, "Yeah, well, you've had it for about 5 minutes and you have to give it back now. It's a $4,000 guitar" (dude, you don't even know how much the damn thing costs?!) "and it's in a glass case for a reason".
I was about to take their heads off (I've played way more expensive guitars in that store, and they never made the slightest fuss about it), but my mom chimed in and said, "Let's ask the manager."
The two salesguys didn't move a muscle, even after my mom asked them a second time. Finally she got up and asked the manager herself (who, BTW, is kind of friendly with us) and he said "Sure, let her play".
What bothers me about this incident is that apparently unless you're a big, beefy guy with a million piercings, it will be assumed that you know nothing about guitars, even before they've let you touch the thing. I mean, just because I'm a girl I have to put up with this?!
So, comments? Opinions? Anything like this ever happen to you?

Glad to be guy.
There are some douche bags here at this place called Apple Music Row, they are like that and I don't understand because it's not like they personally lose money on it. I get that the value could go down for nicks and scratches, but still. No need to get nasty about it.

The guys there are nice and friendly, so I haven't had to deal with any crap like that from my local music store. Although, the most expensive thing I've tried to play on there was a Dime Razorback Explosion. I want to try one or more of the ******** Taylor guitars they have in their acoustic section though.

It's s**t like this that makes me happy to live in a smaller town where I know both of my music store staff like friends.
Also, if you can't really afford it, I can see why they don't really want you playing it. You're totally not going to buy it and unless they've seen you play before it's nerve wracking on their end. You almost have to work your way up to those guitars smile

Haha, it's funny you say that. You do have some good points...People always think I work at the guitar store. Seriously. I always get asked for prices. It was funny at first, but now it's kind of annoying. It happens in CD, and bookstores too! I don't even look like someone that works there!

I usually look for the person that looks most miserable and ask them because they must work there. (why else would you be miserable in a guitar shop) Usually right.

Oh yes... I'm back...University is quite the ache in the scrotal region
I hate any kind of steriotyping that isn't comical, but this one REALLY takes the biscuit!
Personally, I'd have one of my 'beefy tattooed' typical pals come into the store, play it without the predijust, play it piss poorly, then really kick off saying one of the attendants is giving you filthy looks... then go Rock and freaking roll on thier arses!
On another note... Pob!

Not experiences quite like that, but I had an idiot at a music store try to give me steel strings for a classical guitar once... *shudders* I tend to avoid music stores.

and speaking of scrotal aches, how can someone say they avoid music stores? You make your own strings or something? That guy that tried to sell you some steelstrings prolly wasn't a musician. It's not his fault he's stupid.

It's not his fault he's stupid. He was a musician, just a stupid one who wanted to hit on me and wasn't paying attention to anything that I said. Clearly, he didn't get anywhere... but since my guitar takes nylon strings, they tend to last longer than steel ones would. I try not to change them more than once a year unless one breaks. Right after you change nylon strings, they stretch like a ******** and the guitar needs re-tuned after fifteen minutes of playing... I never really have the money to replace them more often than that either. *sighs*

He failed as a pimp, failed as a sales man, and failed as a musician. you should let him know that next time you see him, because I guarantee he also failed at seeing that.

I've not had anything that terrible happen, but I have walked into a music store that advertised guitar lessons, and the owner didn't even know the phrygian scale, then had the balls to tell me I was playing in the wrong key.
