Ka'ohu
She was frolicking in the dirt. Quite literally frolicking. She had been hot and irritated by the sun's annoying rays, wishing for some rain, a cloud to shade her head, even a storm! But no, the sun was there again and she'd spent the last hour searching for a place to bathe.
What she'd found was a mud hole and that was currently what she was rolling in.
Her legs were caped in it, her sides lapped with it. Her face and back were splattered but not quite covered yet. Either way, the heat was gone and the mud felt comfortable and heavy. Yes, a few more rolls and splashes and she'd be ready for a nice long muddy, cat-nap.
What she didn't realise that said mud hole was just crossing into the borders of a pride. She also didn't realise just how much noise all the mud was making from being flung up into the air...

 Grumble grumble grumble.
Rarely did any good conversation come out of the pink male, and rarely did he bother wanting good conversation. The pride was rather frustrating, the shifts in power and the loss of the queen and a prince, the little prince being.. so little for so long. Try as Ahnik might, he couldn't stop worrying a bit too much about it. He couldn't be apathetic, he did care.. he just did not see himself as having a good outlet for it, so he was grouchy and solitary.
Grumble grumble.
...
What was all that noise? Ahnik was out for a walk, taking a good look around the lands because it kept him occupied and doing his job was the least he could do, after all. Rarely did he find anything, though, but his attention was caught by the sounds of squishy splashing. It wasn't something he heard often, so he went to investigate. When he spotted the muddy lioness, he didn't recognize her- not from the pride or from his past, so he approached with a less-than-impressed frown on his face. He didn't say anything.

He might not have recognised her, but Ka certainly recognised him. Okay, she didn't have many friends...actually she didn't have any friends. She didn't meet that met people passing by, either. That aside, Ahnik certainly did have spectacular colouring. So much so that even if she had over one hundred friends she probably would have recognised him.
"Grump-Face!" She called, tossing back her head and flicking mud that arched up into the air to land all around her. "Fancy seeing yous here. I betcha remember me, eh?" With a laugh, she moved forwards. "How could yah not. I mean, look at me!" She made a grand gesture, fell silent, then burst into laughter.
"Excuse the mess."

As soon as she called out to him, he knew exactly who she was- and his grumpy frown deepened greatly. He hadn't had the best of times talking to her before but now.. here she was again, right in the midst of his pride's lands. He was tempted to walk away, not let on they were in a pride's lands and hope she would just go away.. but it was a passing idea.
"I remember," he muttered, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. He could be reasonably polite. A little bit. Maybe.
"What are you doing here?"

Yes, he hadn't changed one single bit. Still the same old grump-face, even if he was a bit older and a bit bigger. Fatter? Or just bigger? She decided she'd not ask in case it chased him off before she'd even had a chance to spark up a conversation with him.
"Yous finally got yer mane, I see." She chuckled. "I ne'er caught yer name before, Grump-Face. I'm Ka'ohu, by the way. Or just Ka. More catchy, ain't it?" She moved a step closer, glancing at him through the tresses of her muddy fur. Then, she smiled widely and paused before responding to his question. She wasn't one for choosing her words, she just didn't feel like answering straight away.
"Rolling in mud. What else d'yah think? Lookin' fer squirrels?" She took another step closer. "What are yous doin'?"

Ahnik hadn't even realized that he didn't know her name, he didn't talk much to others- least of all to tell stories about itchy lionesses trying to defend a snack.. and he hadn't seen her since. She was quick to introduce herself, but not without giving him a rather apt nickname.
"Of course I got my mane, I said I would," he grumbled back, wondering if he should correct her on the name or just let her continue with the 'grump-face' name. Surprisingly, it didn't bother him as much. Maybe he was at peak annoyance by her mere presence.
"I'm patrolling for intruders," he hissed when she stated the obvious, though he could hardly be upset when he failed to mention she was in a pride's territory. But the cat was out of the bag now, "You're in the Outlands now so scram." No, he was not much of a welcoming party.

"Touchy, touchy, aren't we?" She beamed, seeming to take a great fondness for this new nickname. "You oughta learn some manners, Grump-face, else yah'll ne'er get yerself a smile." She took another step.
If she was bothered by the fact she was on a pride's lands, she didn't let on. In fact she didn't seem to look as if she understood the concept at all. She'd been born a rogue, grown up as a rogue and as far as she was concerned she could go where she liked. Was Grump-face really going to try to stop her? What was he going to do? Tackle her to the ground? When she was covered in all this mud? Hardly likely.
"Well, if yer lookin' fer intruders, yer in the wrong place. I ain't intruding on nuthin' but this mud. See?" And when he told her to scram she gave a sly smile. "Oh come on, don't be such a grump, Grump-face. Don't yah know how to have fun?" And with that, she scooped a pawful of mud and threw it at him, laughing merrily.

Ahnik narrowed his eyes and simply stared at Ka'ohu with the same grumpy, unmoving face. He didn't care about smiles, especially in a lecture from some strange, scratchy outsider. So, he wasn't even going to bother responding to that particular remark. He never smiled, not really. And that didn't other him.
He considered his options, she really wasn't causing any trouble or posing any threat- but she didn't see to care that she was on a pride's land, which was enough to make him suspect she might not care about their rules. As he understood it, at least respecting them as a pride, their rules and their way of life.. and you were not necessarily chased away.
"But the mud is--"
He didn't get to comment, instead he was forced to evade the pawful of mud that came flying at him. Fortunately, it missed his face- but he still got hit in the shoulder.
"Very mature," he growled, "I'm not here to have fun."

She giggled as the mud struck him, cutting off his words and making him even grumpier than before. It was far too much fun winding up this lion. No, she wouldn't leave just yet. She'd push his buttons, get him real angry, then she'd scarper. She didn't know his name, but she certainly knew where he lived and one thing was for sure. She'd be back to aggravate him in a couple of days when this was over.
She smiled.
"Ew look! Mud on yous!!" She laughed louder, shaking muddy strands of fur out of her eyes. As he spoke again, she lifted her face and looked at him, seeming sort of sad that he'd not even laughed a little bit. "No fun, eh?" She blinked. "Then...what're yah 'ere fer? To chase mud-monsters outta pride lands?"
She stepped towards him again, wriggled as if she were thinking of pouncing him. "No wonder yer such a Grump-face. Yous need to get out more."

Ahnik didn't need to know exactly what she was thinking to know exactly how much fun she was having harassing him like this. He needed to calm down, to not react and stop her fun where it was so she would actually leave him alone. The problem was that she was too good at making him angry.
His eyes narrowed at her but he still did his best not to say anything more about the mud on him- but he was very tempted to agree with her on the mud-monsters thing. If only because it implied that was what she was, and he was OK with that.
"I'm just fine," he grumbled, watching her very carefully when she moved like she might pounce him, "I don't need anything. Just go away."

"Are yous suuuure you dun need anything?" She replied as smoothly as she could with her rough voice. "Maybe I could teach yous to laugh or something, since I'mma such a nice person and all that." She bounded towards him, leaving the muddy ground behind in an attempt to see how far she could push him without breaking the thread.
"Yous have good eyes, Grump-face, maybe if yous smiled some more yous wouldn't be so oogly." She chuckled. "I ain't no beauty but I sure is prettier than yous." She waved a paw to flick some mud free.
"Mud baths are good for the fur, yous know that? Good for the fleas too. Stops the itchies."

"I'm sure," he replied in the same short and grumpy tone he always had and he stood tensely, watching her as she moved closer with an alarming speed. He didn't move, though, determined to stand his ground. His blue eyes narrowed further when she dared to compliment them and call him ugly. His glanced moved over her when she said she was prettier than he was, and he was ready to open his mouth to comment when she continued about mud.
"I don't have fleas," he snapped, "Are you done yet?"

She pouted a little. "Oh yous no fun. I'm trying my hardest here to be yer friend!" She stomped a paw and made to push up against him, determined to get some sort of reaction out of him other than: 'go away' or a grumpy expression.
"Was yous not given much attentions as a furling, Grump-face? That why yous don't like chattin' or laughing' or rolling in mud - or any of that neat stuffs." She blinked, purring. "You could come scavenging with me, if yous want to."
She wasn't quite sure why she was making an effort with this guy. Most lions and lionesses she steered clear of, but maybe it was the fact that this lion went out of his way to avoid her, which made it so tempting to chase after him. She always had liked a challenge.

His expression changed ever so slightly when she used the word 'friend'. He knew he never really had any friends, and he had never really cared- but he also never recognized any of his interactions with this strange lioness as her attempting to actually befriend him. It was weird, she was weird and he didn't need any friends, especially if this was what it was like.
He didn't care much to talk about his youth, either. He'd been around for the founding of the pride, his siblings being in power, his mother dying before he could even develop any real memories of her, sticking mostly to himself and trying to figure out a way to be as important as everybody else- and failing miserably.
"No thank you," he snapped with a strange polite twist, though he was still rather cranky, "Why would you even keep trying?"

Her face twisted into a frown and she knew she was going to be leaving on the same negative note as last time. But really, she had tried everything and if he wasn't up for scavenging what else could she offer? Nothing, that's what.
"Fine." She stuck her tongue out at him. "I won't keep tryin' then." She bounced away and eyed him with a look that she said she really didn't understand him at all.
"I'm goin' now, Grumpy-face, but be warned, I'll be back. This is the best mudbath for miles around, right? So, you can come chase me off again sometime." She flashed him a grin and, pausing to itch behind an ear, she turned and made off across the savannah.
