There. There were the bushes she’d crept through so long ago. So long ago. They were different, of course, they’d died back in place and grown larger in others. She’d know this place anywhere though. The border of her home, of her family’s home. So long, and yet... and yet not so long. She’d grown into an adult... well more or less; she was on the very cusp now of being a full grown mare as opposed to being on the cusp of changing from young filly to adolescent. It hadn’t been so very long, she doubted much would have changed with her parents. They would look the same, would be the same people. Her siblings would be different; she was both exited and terrified of meeting them again and seeing how they’d turned out.

As Sekhmet walked on, the waves on nostalgia continued to wash over her, conjured up powerful memories from foalhood. She had so many happy memories of this place and yet... and yet she was not sorry that she’d left. It had been the right thing to do for herself, the only thing she could’ve done and kept her happiness. Even if an arranged mating never came to her, she would have had to act a certain way here, be someone she wasn’t. Yes. It was good that she’d gone away, and it was better that she was back now. Half her life here, half of it with the Katilenuck. If she was still welcome here, that was how she wanted it to be.

Smiling to herself, Sekhmet walked onward, keeping her eyes open for familiar faces as she went.

It was easy to feel good about yourself after a successful diplomatic mission. It was also easy to feel good about yourself when you had two wonderful young daughters to play with, and several older children who were equally wonderful. Being wonderful yourself made it easy to feel good too. Deigo chuckled to himself and internally listed his virtues. Intelligent, handsome, witty, strong, a decent enough person when it came down to it. Yes, it was certainly a good day to be Diego; most days were of course but something about the chill fresh air and a recent lack of c**k ups made it better than usual.

He would go and find his two little girls, probably with their mother or the mother of one of their friends and play with them a while. Then he’d go and find Bastet if she wasn’t with them, then Sao and Andre, then report back to his father... Actually, change of plan, seen as Sekhmet was just over there he might as well greet her firs- Sekhmet! The golden stallion froze on the spot and stared. No mistaking it. Sekhmet. She hadn’t spotted him yet. What could he say to her?

“I hope you’re aware that you’re really rather late for curfew, young lady.” Ha, a witticism, a rather good one under the circumstances he felt. She was a young lady now too. His sleekness, her mother’s long flowing mane and tail, and when she turned to face him, her mother’s eyes with the same light of passion and determination. She had grown up wonderfully. He was definitely going to have to see off a few young stallions who liked her a bit too well. “It’s wonderful to have you home,” the golden stallion added with a smile when his daughter didn’t make an immediate response, “we’ve missed you.”

Late for... late for curfew. Sekhmet stared in disbelief at the golden stallion for a few moments, but when her father spoke again she grinned and bounded over to him. “Riruy!,” she nuzzled his neck and had to swallow a lump in her throat as he returned the gesture. “I’ve missed you so much, and I’m sorry,” she mumbled vaguely, “I know I’ve been gone a long time and that I didn’t say anything to you but... Well I had my reasons. I hope you’re not too mad at me.”

At least it seemed that he didn’t hate her. She regretted that she hadn’t told him now, or at least asked her mother to do so when the elder mare had caught her in the process of leaving. It had seemed like the only way at the time, but now she was sure she could have managed to get away even if she had told him, perhaps he would even have allowed her to leave. It would have saved both of them a lot of pain, but she couldn’t change the past.

Diego sighed and gave his daughter another nudge before stepping back to speak with her more easily. “No,” he said with a shake of his head, “I’m not angry. A while after you vanished, your mother explained things to me. I wish you’d told me yourself, wish you hadn’t felt the need to go at all but you’re back now, and that’s what matters. Have you seen any of the others yet?”

She had left to make sure that she never had to take an arranged mate, to make sure that she didn’t have to be a well-behaved lady all her life, to make herself... To make herself not quite part of the herd anymore. Yes, he was sure he could swing that; like his eldest children she would be a daughter to him, but not of the herd. He wished it didn’t have to be like that and... Well she’d always been a smart, sensible sort of a girl so he was certain that she had a watertight excuse to avoid what she had departed to avoid, beyond having rather disgraced herself by vanishing. He hoped she hadn’t done anything too extreme. He wasn’t quite sure what he feared she’d done, but whatever it was he certainly feared it.

He wished she hadn’t gone, wished it hadn’t been an issue at all, that he could have sworn to her she could be with whoever she wanted and live however she wanted. He couldn’t have done that though; it would have been a lie. They all had to act appropriately for their station in life; if they didn’t then members of the herd might start to question why they were in charge. That would be bad not only for himself and his family but for everyone; social upheaval was never pretty.

Sekhmet heaved a huge sigh of relief and shook herself to get rid of the tension that had built up in all her muscles. “Good, I’m glad you’re not angry, and I haven’t seen anyone else at all yet... How is everyone?”

Surely... surely if something bad had happened to someone there would be a certain grimness in her father’s face? She’d hardly even considered the possibility that all might not be well here; it was home, it was... it was safe. She’d been the one in danger, the one out alone in the wide world but something could have happened; it was possible. A trip. A fight. Enemies of the herd... well they hadn’t had any when she’d left, but they could have gained some. Anything could have happened in her absence, but her father didn’t look grim so it was probably fine. All the same, she could feel herself tensing again; he couldn’t answer her question soon enough! There had to be a reason he was still silent, but now he was grinning!

“Riruy! Tell! Please!”

Just as he was about to speak, a wave of worry washed over him all of a sudden, and he thought he saw... He thought he saw Sao and Andre and Bastet... Hurt? Dead? Blinking the golden stallion shook his head, disconcerted to say the least. He supposed those were the sorts of things Sekhmet could be imagining. It was cruel to keep her hanging.

"Don't worry, everyone's fine," he said after a moment with a faintly bemused smile to his daughter. "You have two new sisters as well, only just got back from Ryuten a few suns ago actually." His little girls. So many children he had now, it was hard to believe. He wasn't even all that old yet; nothing like a colt of course, but still well in his prime. He'd just been lucky, he supposed.

"Come on then; the others will be thrilled to see you," he said, nudging Sekhmet's neck and turning back towards the direction he'd been heading before he spotted Sekhmet.

What had that... that flash meant? It had been so vivid. Why should he imagine such a thing? He really had no idea at all. It was probably nothing, but he couldn't help being disturbed by it.

Sekhmet first relaxed and then found herself laughing and grinning. "New sisters? Great! I can't wait to meet them!" She did hope her father didn't think she was back for good... she didn't want to discuss it with him right now. She wasn't quite sure she could explain at all, let alone without hurting his feelings. She just... well, she liked Dahak. She wanted to know him better. She wanted... did she want more than friendship with the sly b*****d? She wasn't sure. She didn't know.

Sighing faintly to herself, the striped mare pushed thoughts of the Shaman aside. Worry about that later; for now she had family to meet and greet. It had been too long, far too long, since she'd seen her tree siblings and her parents. All her other relatives come to that. She did love them, she loved them so much... But she wasn't going to stay here. She didn't belong here anymore, and nothing could change that.

"So," she set off beside her father and gave him another smile, "other than new sisters, did I miss much?" Had Andre or Sao taken a mate yet, either by their own choice or through some sort of political arrangement? It was possible she supposed; they were all still rather young for committing like that but she knew many Nequus were promised and paired off younger. She could end up being an aunt fairly soon.

Deigo chuckled at the young mare. "Well, you missed my brother taking a mate and producing foals; three on his tree, two colts and a filly... Your mother and I are happier, we manage to get away from the herd and be ourselves from time to time now. She finds it especially refreshing; she can race and spar and get disgustingly muddy as much as she pleases." He never had been one for mud; Andre and Sabina seemed to have inherited his fastidious nature. Not Sekhmet so much; she was hardly dirty, but her long mane and tail were tangled, the tail a touch dusty at the end. She could do with a visit to the two-legs in his opinion, but nevermind; for now he was just glad to have her back.

"So what have you been up to?" he asked with a tilt of his head. "I imagine you must have had some interesting adventures..." None seemed to have left a mark on her though. She was the filly he remembered, only older, more mature, and with a worldly air about her. She had always been savvy, but now she had the experience to go along with her innate good sense.

Sekhmet shuffled her winged and flicked her tail nervously. She couldn't mention Dahak, not yet anyway. Later she would, but not yet... She did like his height. Jala stallion were supposed to be smaller than their mares, but she liked him tall and skinny and so very brightly coloured... Back on track, Sekhmet!

"Well, I've traveled a lot," she said with a nod. "I spent some time on the edge of Yisi, the eastern edge, then I visited Quirne and wandered north. Made one good friend, Ichsa stallion called Spyke, and we went around together for a while. When I went up northwest we parted though. Hope to see him again sometime soon; he was cool." He had been. He'd never stopped checking her out, but she hadn't minded really. He knew nothing was going to happen, and had been content just to look. Honestly, she had found herself rather flattered.

...BlueWhiteRed. Tall. Thin. Brindled. Diego blinked, and the image vanished. Dahak. He felt almost as though somebody had spoken, but no. Nobody had said a thing... He shook his head vigorously. This was getting creepy. "Well, glad you had fun," Diego said, dragging himself back to reality, "glad you're back as well. I've said that, but I'll say it again." He missed his elder children now. He so seldom saw them these days; they were all off living their own lives... and that was good. He was glad. He still missed them...

The image bothered him, the image of that stallion. A katilenuck. Why had he just imagine a katilenuck, and so precisely! He never pictured them with vivid colours; he tended to think of them as bays and greys and duns and chestnuts. Not blue white and red, for sure. And a name. Why had he named it, or thought somebody had named it? Perhaps it was the heat. A lie down in the shade and a cool drink would sort him out.

Sekhmet frowned slightly; for just a moment it had seemed as though there was something wrong with her sire... It had passed now though, whatever it had been, and she grinned at him. "Yea, I'm glad I had fun too, but I'm also glad to be back... I won't be living here as part of the herd all the time though." It was only fair to warn him. He might be expecting her to move back like a good girl. She doubted that, but it was possible.

"I'll be here some of the time of course," she went on hurriedly, "I've just... found somewhere else I'd like to be too. There's a guy... I think I like him, but... Well it's a bit complicated." She smiled sheepisly and shook her head at herself. It wasn't complicated. She was making it complicated because she was nervous. She wasn't really sure how she did feel about Dahak, but whatever it was it wasn't complex. He annoyed her, proud b*****d that he was, but she liked him all the same. He was smart, and he could be funny when he cared to and... Yea.

He'd expected that, but he couldn't help being a little crestfallen. At least she planned to be here some of the time; this wasn't just a flying visit before leaving again and never returning. "I hope he's good enough for you," Diego said with a wry smile after some moments of silence, "I don't have the luxury of being able to go and check up on him. I trust your judgment Sekhmet, always have."

As a father, he was always skeptical that anyone could be good enough for his children. You had to let them go, though, let them choose for themselves... Well, it looked as though his father planned to find a mare for Andre, but he had ensured that he son would at least be given a choice between a few if the sly old b*****d did decide he needed setting up.

Sekhmet chuckled. "Well, thanks riruy, nice to know!... He is though. He's great... Not perfect of course," she gave a snort, "but his faults are ones I can tolerate. I think. I guess i don't know him all that well yet but... well I feel like I do." It was nice to be able talk about his, even if she couldn't yet admit that the stallion in question was a high ranking katilenuck. She wasn't the silly sort of girl who sighed and fainted over handsome stallions buuuuut... Well, thinking of Dahak did make her smile softly, or at times grin widely. He was something alright...

When was she going to mention his herd? She had originally planned her association with the brindled herd as her let out. Now though, now she was actually here, she hesitated to mention it. She doubted anyone would be very pleased with her, even if she said her bit about improving the lot of the slaves she interacted with. Humm. Well, she didn't have to bring it up right away. Give it a few days, give herself time to think
PostPosted: Sat May 09, 2009 8:24 am

Diego nodded. "Well yes, nobody is perfect. Believe it or not, even I'm not perfect! Well, not always anyway," he gave a wicked grin. "Still, a lad with flaws you can roll your eyes over rather than scream about is good," he said with another nod. "Much better when people go into relationships knowing their partner isn't a deity embodied. So long as he can handle your flaws too, you might end up together for a long time."

He and Iona could have been like that... No. Not really. She had her lady love. She had loved him, but not as she loved her lost partner. He was glad that at least one of his children seemed to be headed for a normal romance; none of the elder ones had found lovers yet, or at least if they had, the lovers had never been brought home to meet him. That seemed quite likely. Most of them had nothing at all to do with him these days. At least he was close to Aquila, and to his younger children though.

Sekhmet tossed her mane like a willful young mare who couldn't see past the end of her own nose. "Flaws? Me? Whatever can you mean riruy! My only flaw is being far too perfect for anyone to handle without getting jealous!" Willful, maybe too blunt, willful, sometimes impulsive, willful... Yea, she had her problems, but Dahak seemed to like her all the same. It would be good to see him again soon if she could. She missed him. She hoped he didn't find some other girl in her absence.
