I can't believe what the critics had to say about repo, in the reviews.

So maddening.

Anyone else catch it?

Ooops. I just realized I posted in the wrong place. >.>

If anyone can move my topic, that would be awesome.

My apologies. <3

You wanted this in the main forum, yes?

The reviews do piss me off. I don't mind if someone doesn't like the movie and has legitimate complains--Repo! isn't for everone--but when they complain about it being an opera, or say it sucks because Paris Hilton "stars", I want to grab that person and shake them.

Sometimes we have to consider the source. I take most high-end critiques with a grain of salt because those people are looking for movies like "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood." Now, those are good movies (at least "No Country" is, I haven't seen the latter), but they follow the lines of art cinema, starred big name actors, and were somewhat geared towards the "intellectual" crowd. What defines "intellectual" varies a lot, but critics generally like when movies have deep themes and are vague (at times terribly so). "No Country for Old Men" was very vague at some points, and the ending was frustrating. I watched it and went "WHAT?!" because the rest of the movie was quite good.

Repo!'s definitely not for everyone (my friend was cringing and shielding her eyes during the violent parts, lol), but it seems that critics don't take that into consideration. To me, a lot of critics are very bitter people, haha. Whenever I review a film (I have a blog that has some movie reviews as entries), I say, "If you're this type of person," or "you enjoy X movie, then..." because that makes the audience clearer. I feel that critics need to not be so artsy-fartsy and broaden their horizons most of the time. >>;

Also, if you read the review by Ben Lyons, disregard it. He's considered an idiot by almost all other well-known critics. He thought "I Am Legend" was one of the greatest movies of all time. It was good, but that's one hell of an honor. o_o;

Edit: And why hello there Marmee. smile

By no means do I think that Paris Hilton is the next Kate Winslet or anything, but it sort of pissed me off that she was nominated for a Razzie for Actress for her role in Repo!.

I was wondering, did they do their research? She did a great job. And it seems she was nominated for just being Paris. (Off subject, but I had to rant).

But, I think that critics are just rating this movie low because they didn't know what they were getting into. I mean, not all stage to screen adaptations are good, but Repo! is a totally different thing. It's like it has taken on a life of its own. And I think that maybe because of LGF low promotion, critics just weren't that interested in really watching the movie, getting into it, and reviewing it fairly.

I never bother with reviews, no one opinion really matters to me when it comes to movies.

I think the reason most critics talked about Paris in this movie is because she the one that will get the most people to pay attention. If they said "Ogre in Repo!" or "Anthony Head steals hearts in Goth Opera" not to many people would read that. She is in the news a lot, so they just use her name. And like Execute Exodus said, critics like complex intellectual movies that you have to watch a few time to completely understand. Which is why some critics didn't like Repo! because you pretty much understand the plot after the first time you see it. All that really matters is that the fans like it.

I have a few friends who were really expecting to like Repo, but were severely disappointed, for actually different reasons. For example, one of my friends didn't think it was Opera-y enough and another friend of mine didn't think there was enough development of characters that weren't immediately related to the Wallace-centered main plot. So I guess there is a lot of different reasons for someone to not like it.

I also think another thing that the critics didn't like was that Repo isn't necessarily supposed to be taken seriously - a lot of it is quite zany and over-the-top. For example, Luigi stabbing everyone isn't supposed to be serious business, it's supposed to be laughed at for being ridiculous (or at least that's how it seemed to me).

...I'm guilty of only having read one serious review, though, so I'm not sure how valid my point is here >.>

Dear Marni, I am so SORRY. . . . . . .

I don't understand how the reviews could possibly be bad. This movie seriously needs more love and less critique. I mean, I realize the movie isn't for everyone, but it's amazing and I wish more people would realize that. Like my dad, -cough-.

It really upsets me when I see bad reviews for Repo!. It deserves much praise. It's the best movie I have seen for a LONG time. And the music is amazing.

Perhaps they rate it so badly because they weren't intelligent enough to follow what was going on. :0

I Don't Understand The Complaints, But People Have Them.
I Try Not To Listen To Bad Reviews, Some Really Good Movies Get Awful Ones. What Bothers Me Is How They Always Say That Hilton "Stars". In No Way Is She The Star Character. But, You Know, Nobody Knows The Names Of The Two main Characters. I Guess If They'd Said "Starring That Spanish Girl From Spykids" Or "That Old Guy From Buffy" People May Have Been Like "Ohhh."
I Do Understand That It's Not For Everyone, Though.
But Just The Originality Of That Type Of Musical Should Get Some Credit.
