Rook sat in the carpeted designated child zone of the mall. His hands hitting a nearby large red block, not in anger but to create a steady drumming noise. The boy was bored and had been left to occupy himself here while his mother and sisters shopped for girly things, well mostly clothes as far as he knew but they all went into a girls change room to try things on and that left him alone. Rather than stand around in the store waiting his mother had said Rook could wait here.
The brightly coloured area contained large plastic shape sculptures a few baskets of toys and some books. Rook had found the shapes most interesting when he realized he could drum on them. Currently he was tapping out the tune be our guest as he's recently watched a movie containing said song and had liked it

"An da cap'n saiiiiddd--" a deep, gravelly voice came first, overlaying the sounds of a little girl muttering to herself. She had finally outgrown the screaming stage, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to show when she was unhappy! "Dat da lichen needed clothes. And de lichen is gonna GET clothes wedder she's dere or not, so you don't gotta be dere for dem to get you clothes."
"Don't want," Jordi muttered. "Was uggggllyyy."
"Da ledder one?"
"Da pink!" she said. "Don't like, don't like, don't like!!" She was being carried by the big rock man, and she didn't look as if she cared to get down, but her eyes fell on the toys in the play area and she started to squirm. "Down."

Rook's crimson eyes were drawn to the lightly fussing girl and he watched quietly to see what would happen. It might be nice to have someone to talk to, even if they were younger, on the other hand the boy had had several bad experiences with strangers lately and he was being cautious about them now.

The big rock troll gently put the little girl on the floor, giving her a few minutes to catch her balance before he sat down at the edge of the play area to watch her.
She looked around, her eyes catching on Rook for the first time, and started toddling towards him, her short little legs making surprisingly good time. She was barely over a foot tall, but she talked and moved as if she was at least three. In fact every moment she was around she seemed to be growing into her age.
"You like trains?" she demanded of the older boy when she got to him, clearly not bothered by the size difference in the least.

Rook nodded and smiled "Trains are nice, I like the ones on tv that talk." Rook was pretty sure no actual real trains could talk but the ones on the show Bishop liked to watch were pretty neat. " They all look so different but they're all important." That had been something of a boost for the boy who was suffering a bit of self confidence in his looks after meeting Iselda, the girl had barely agreed to let him help her when she was lost and he knew it was becuase he was different than her. Different than a lot of people.

She nodded, even though she hadn't seen that show yet. "Ever-one different," she repeated. "Too tall." It was said with the disgust of someone who was vastly superior, being the right height. "You's tall, too. I sowwy." Then she patted his leg.
It didn't even seem to cross her mind that he was different in other ways.

Rook was confused, he'd just been sort of insulted because he was too tall? But the girl pitied him for it? Uncertain of exactly how to respond the boy curled his long tail forward and let the end rest on top of the girl's hand, while he rubbed a bit self consciously at the jewel embedded in his forehead. " I like being tall" he admitted, he liked being able to reach things on his own and walk faster with longer legs and all the fun things that came with growth. In fact Rook wasn't sure there was any advantage to being short.

"Is okay," Jordan said, reaching up and tugging the tip of his tail off of her head. "Is good you like," she told him. Not that she could understand it, herself. Being short was great! For one, there was a lot less distance to fall!
"I is dwarf," she said proudly, shoving a thumb at her chest. "I has trains," she added. Life was perfect as far as she was concerned.

" I don't know what I am, but my name is Rook" The rubbery grey skinned boy said with a smile " I have drums." This girl was simple a little forward in ways but simple to understand and she didn't mind that he was different.

"Drums?" she repeated curiously. "What drums?" She was only about a week old, after all. She hadn't learned the words for everything yet. "They go chu chuu?"

Rook shook his head and briefly tapped on the nearby block again " It's a thing you hit like this to make music." Drums weren't exactly the easiest thing to explain and really Rook wasn't sure even hew knew what they really were, to him they were just drums.

"Boom?" she asked, listening to the noise. "Boom boom!" she said with a grin. "Boom boom!" She was at the stage that loud noises were the best thing EVER, and it showed. She started beating on the plastic with him, completely out of rhythm, but happy. "Boom boom!"

Rook nodded slowly, that was in effect the noise drums made. The boy found the smaller child's lack of timing a bit irritating but it wasn't horrible. instead he continued to drum himself trying to make a beat that could incorporate her chaotic drumming with his more steady sound.

She got bored. Her eyes wandered around and landed on the toy boxes, and she headed over, sitting down to dig through it. She pulled out a plastic train, joyfully placing it on the ground and pushing it around. "Chu chuu!" she said.
She seemed to have forgotten Rook entirely, until she looked over at him. "Chu chuu!" she said, waving the train in the air.

Rook smiled at the dwarf child and laughed a little " It's a very nice train just remember they stay on the ground." The last thing the world needed was flying trains zipping about filled with passengers in long loosely connected cards snaking around behind the engine wildly.
Never the less Rook made a soft whistling sound like a train to see if it would amuse the girl.
