...liking obscure bands. You really like their work, but it turns out that you can't actually get their music anywhere, either in physical form or even for download. There are 3 albums I'm looking for in particular and so far the only CDs I've found are 30-40 dollars, and one I can't even find at all. Gah. stressed

I have similar problems. I don't pirate, I use iTunes, but oftentimes there are bands I like that aren't on there. Also, I really wish I could get some t-shirts with album covers from some of the more obscure bands I like. But alas, they do not exist. Oh, how I wish for a tee with Wolfpack Unleashed's Anthems of Resistance on it... emo

I'd rather not have my computer get eAIDS again, kthx. Wasn't fun the last time. That, and I have sort of an ethical objection to pirating music from artists actually worth supporting, AND physical albums are something of a collectible for me.

pirating doesnt hurt the artists at all. seriously, they don't get jackshit from royalties, it all goes to the record companies. that's why it's the record companies, and not the artists, who were suing pirates, back before they realized that that tactic just isnt effective

Oh I know that labels vacuum up the profits, that's why I said it's "sort of" an objection. I still feel a gut reaction to want to patronize those bands I deem worthy of my attention and hard-earned cash, but I get a reality check in realizing what you said. I mean, if you play good music I think you should be rewarded for it, not just in a flowery, theoretical "it's reward enough having someone enjoy our music" way, but tangibly. Monetarily.

the monetary reward comes from tee shirts, posters, and touring

I have that problem too, mostly because a lot of the bands I like aren't signed to a label or anything and can't afford to mass produce their albums.

if you want to support a band, buy directly from them. oftentimes the record company does give them a stack for touring, personal distribution. so get in contact with them, doesn't hurt to ask.

Problematic if the band has broken up or was unsigned.

But, happily, I've managed to find one album at a reasonable price by visiting the label's website. I can feel okay about buying from Candlelight.
