I never should have let Estrelas talk me into this.

Eponine's experience with Valentine's Day was limited to singing at galas and getting shipped in standard mail once (the Manager was a cheapskate). As far as she was concerned, it was an event where people went around in fancy dresses and suits and ate little cakes and drank champagne and listened to human singers (and one robotic one) sing.

And somehow fat naked babies and archery got mixed in. She wasn't too sure what when on inside human minds, but now, she wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to know.

So she sat under a cheap polyester pavilion (previously, it had been a parachute until an unfortunate meeting with a large sequoia), in front of a cute little garden set. Estrelas had stuck a large pink flower behind her ear. It had fallen out, and Eponine didn't know how to put it back, so she poked it on her hat. She wondered if she looked ridiculous.

Most of all, she wondered what poor soul she got paired with.

It had been a sad few weeks for the Irishman after he had come to the realization that his Italian lass was, in all likelihood, not returning to him any time soon. When the opportunity had arisen for him to join a Valentine's event, he had done so halfheartedly, only doing it because he hoped that maybe, just maybe, his lady fair would be there waiting for him. And so it was that the tall man had dressed in his best, having located some decent black slacks and a nice white button up shirt to wear before gathering up the flowers he'd picked earlier that day and heading down to the gardens where he'd been told to meet his secret Valentine.

Before entering the area, Shane stopped and took a deep breath, fidgeting slightly with his hair and straightening his shirt before walking in. Surprise was evident on his face when he discovered not Moira, but Eponine waiting for him there. Not quite sure of himself, he cleared his throat before putting on his best dashing smile and walked up to the woman, "Hello there, Eponine!"

He wasn't quite sure if she was the one he was supposed to meet, but he figured he couldn't go wrong and so quickly held out the flowers for her perusal, "Happy Valentine's day, lass!" Yet even this master ladies man couldn't completely hide the fact he was just a little saddened and disappointed by the lack of a certain Italian woman whom he had fallen so hard for.

Eponine jumped up when Shane came in. She nodded and squeaked a vague "Hi!" before noticing that he looked so sad.

Eponine's experience with sadness was limited to her own. She did not exactly know the exact motivation behind every person, but Shane did look so upset that she immediately realized what was going on!

"Oh Shane..." Eponine began in a trembling voice. Poor man! "If the flowers mean so much to you, you really don't have to give them to me!"

There were many things Shane could have expected Eponine to say. Such as questions about why he was so sad...why was he so sad at the sight of her...and so many more things that he was ready to wince and duck should she grow upset with him for being sorrowful when he was supposed to be her Valentine. So when Eponine blurted out in her trembling voice that he didn't have to give her the flowers if they meant so much to him he had absolutely no idea how to respond. There was shock...frustration...embarrassment...so many emotions to be had and so little time! It was the shock that registered first and foremost on his face, followed closely by embarrassment as his cheeks grew red and he ducked his eyes just a little, not quite sure what to say. For once, the witty Irishman was at an absolute loss for what to say and do - a sight many back at home would have paid to see for certain!

When words finally returned to him, he gave a small sigh and his blush deepened just a little as he shook his raven locks, "No...They're...for you Eponine. For Valentine's Day."

How awkward the moment was! Quickly, the tall man tried to recover, but only succeeded in clearing his throat and looking like an absolute buffoon. Desperately he tried to cover up his sadness by putting on a grin and chuckling just a little, "Did you expect us to be matched up for this event?" It was lame and not really up to his standard for dealing with the ladies, but so shocked was the clever man that he could, literally, think of nothing else to say.

Eponine opened her mouth as if to speak, then flushed and ducked her head, feeling like an absolute buffoon.

"Oh," she said. Valentine's Day was supposed to bring on an entire flood of emotions- love, passion, desire, happiness... Not embarrassment and idiocy. Well. Of course.

"Oh. Um." She looked up at the flowers. They were very nice and fresh-looking. "Well, I... I bought flowers and candy for you too... Um. Sort of. Well... You see..."

Eponine sighed and proffered the bouquet of radishes and box of dinner mints. She wasn't entirely sure if it was normal, but Estrelas was a human, so she'd know, right?

"No, I wasn't expecting to get paired up with you!" She hesitated, realizing that that could be interpreted as a veiled insult. "Err- No, I don't mean that you're a bad person to be paired up with, I just mean that I didn't think that... I mean, I wasn't sure who I got paired with and I was surprised to see you- I mean, not that it's a bad thing!"

All Shane could do when Eponine presented her radishes and dinner mints to him was blink, before glancing back up and flashing her a hearty grin, "Well, lass, now I just need a main dish and to pick the wine and I could cook up a right good dinner!" He didn't mention, of course, that he'd need lettuce and such to make the salad to put the radishes on, but he didn't want to fluster her if he could help it. Besides, it was actually kind of cute that she'd given him a type of food and a dessert when he enjoyed cooking so much....

Of course, things never go as planned, and in his attempts to NOT let her see how sad he was or how flustered he was...he had gone and made the poor woman flustered. Both hands went up into the air as he patted it, smiling and trying to calm the woman down, "Don't worry, Eponine! I didn't think you'd meant it as an insult..." There was a small, awkward pause as he pondered about what to talk about and he cleared his throat before taking a wild shot.

"So...lass, how're you today?" Another charming smile lit his lips as he watched the woman, and the corners of lips quirked up just a bit more as he winked, "And how's the winter hat farin', by chance?"

He liked it! He liked it! Eponine hid a grin of relief. Looks like Estrelas was right. She thought that giving plant matter and hard stuff was a rather strange way to celebrate a holiday like Valentine's. Looks like it was normal after all! "I'm sure you would," she piped up. She remembered seeing Shane in the kitchens before, when she was on the way to check on the chickens.

How was she today? Immediately, the phrase "Fine, thank you, would you like to see membership programs for the Theater?" ran to her tongue, but she swallowed it.

"How am I?" she repeated, then thought for a while. "Well, I guess I'm fine." She smiled happily as he mentioned the hat. "Oh! I am taking very good care of it. I just washed it this week too," she added, so that he would know that she was taking very good care of the hat. "The hat is fine too."

There was a pause. Wait. She just said she was fine. She just said the hat was fine. There was something that came after that...

"Would you like a program- um, I mean, how are you today?"

Shane couldn't quite tell if the woman had grinned or if she hadn't, so he settled for a polite smile that he hoped would do the job. Perhaps sometime he'd have to invite her down to a nice dinner or something, late at night when the cooks were less likely to be around and therefore catch him in the act of using their ingredients and cooking, well, better than they did. Or at least, he did in his mind.

When Eponine repeated his question, he gave a small, encouraging nod and smile, hoping he wouldn't frighten her off as he so often did. Another smile touched his lips as he heard her say she was all fine, though a dark eyebrow quirked at the 'I guess' part. How could you guess you were all right? Well, that was a question to ask later and not on such a pleasant day, no matter how depressed he was feeling, he knew he couldn't bring the nice lass down with his moping about. A small chuckle left his mouth when she mentioned the hat had been washed and was doing just fine. He was glad she enjoyed the gift so much, even if it had taken him a little trouble to locate another one of similar style and pattern.

With a small tilt of his head at her question, he wondered how best to answer that. The truth was he was depressed, upset, and unhappy, but he didn't feel right dumping that on the woman on Valentine's Day, so instead he settled for a soft smile that didn't quite reach his eyes and said, "I'm doin' all right, lass."

Kerry blue eyes glanced around the gardens and his smile grew a little broader, "Do you like the gardens a lot, Eponine?" As far as he could recall, almost every meeting the duo had had was in the gardens and so he was interested to know if it was, in fact, one of her favorite spots in LOTUS.
