On Friday, I went to a Battle of the Bands concert type thing at my school. There were five local bands.

The first was Red Light Riot, a band that my friends and I hate, for both the quality of their music and the quality of their members. Well, they had broken up that day, but it was too late to cancel, so they hurriedly got some replacement members together. Of course, they had nothing prepared, so they just had one riff that they played over and over and improvised for 20 minutes. They didn't have vocals, and at one point the drummer and guitarist stopped, got up, and switched instruments, because otherwise they would have no variety. They sucked.

Then was Possible Side Effects, a freshman band with a high-pitched singer that sounded like a scene band. They brought a bunch of girls to cheer for the singer, too, which probably helped them place higher. Damn freshmen.

After that was Eastern Glow, a band made up of some of my best friends, and the main reason I came. Their originals were the best, but they played a cover of Rush's Spirit of Radio really well too. They had a LOT of feedback on the microphones, though...

Following them was some crappy freshman band that played covers of 3 Doors Down and Green Day, we didn't even listen, we went out to mess around in the commons during their set.

Then... There came a shock to me. There was a band that came out, and started warming up and fine-tuning their instruments on stage. As soon as I heard the distortion... I knew this would be heavy. They had been using a name that was something like Once the Fallen, but had changed it to The Resistance. The singer told everyone that they were there to have fun, and encouraged everyone to get up and come up to the stage. We did. When they started playing, it was epic. And not even just for a school concert. They played really good death metal, and almost everyone was headbanging, and there were groups moshing. People who don't normally listen to metal were standing up front, their hair flailing wildly. My neck was sore for the first time in a long time. Though, I am kind of upset that one of their members was the son of the guy doing operating the sound system, which may account for why they were the only ones with no feedback...

But then, I didn't expect anything more than a good time from them. I mean, the judges were middle-aged female high school teachers. They obviously wouldn't vote for the death metal band. BUT THEY GOT 1ST PLACE. I guess they based it off of how much they saw people enjoying it. 3nodding 'Twas a good night indeed. mrgreen

That sounds like fun. Though I never planned on ever playing in a school talent show thingy, simply because I know a lot people don't enjoy the music I'm into and usually only bands that suck do those things.

Does that band The Resistance have a myspace or anything?

It was, and it wasn't a talent show like you think of, it was after school with a $5 fee for tickets, it wasn't like where instead of part of the school day everyone packs into an auditorium. Still, I agree, usually the bands that play metal at these things aren't very good.

Not that I know of, I'll ask around tomorrow.

Nice, he sounds pretty good.

@Mega: Mnyeh, you know how school staff are. I half-expected them just to vote for what they liked.

nah, they do that at talent shows, but for battle of the bands, they let the audience decide.

actually, at my school, we didnt have any battle of the bands, and there was no "winner" of the talent show. they were too concerned that winners would make the losers feel bad, so they changed the talent show from a semi-contest into just a chance for anyone and everyone (with or without talent - there were no auditions) to get up and do something "for fun." lame, i know.

That's how ours is too, and the funny thing is, they don't even call it a talent show anymore, because you don't need talent. They call it a variety show. lol But the battle of the bands thing was a seperate thing after school, so they could do what they wanted.
