James was never one to sleep on the job, but he'd made the mistake the prior night of staying up until three a.m. reading. It had been a dreadfully interesting book, so the blame couldn't be placed entirely on him. And besides, it was the university library - everyone was over at the computers, not wandering the towering shelves looking for books. He leaned against a rack and took off his glasses, first checking around for the Chief Librarian. The vulture-like woman was no where in sight, thankfully, and he'd only rest his eyes for a few minutes...
...and a few minutes later, James was fast asleep.

Generally, the spirits in charge of assignments were more prone to knocking people out but before they'd gotten to the pushing of books and making a small ruckus to clean up, the man was out like a light. Hey, that worked! Quickly they pulled his body from its current location and set to the task of removing his soul - which was pretty easy to do with a sleeping person as well as with an unconscious one apparently, who knew! - and leaving the body to wait for the end of the bonding. A thing magic cord placed 'round his neck, and left in a comfy bed while his soul was off being chosen by a deity, not too bad of a state to be left in at least, right?
When the man was allowed to wake up after the bonding a bit of extra time had passed - it seemed the spirits held him in between time and space for a bit so he could sleep it off since he made their job easy on them. Now he was resting on a bed in a room where a woman dressed in a red bellhop's uniform with purple skin and brown hair was waiting to see him. Um okay?
"Hihi! Glad to see you up up up!"

James woke with a snort, blinking dazedly with mouth slightly agape.
"Hhnghn."
Clearing his throat and sitting up, he stretched, yawned, and looked around.
"...oh. Oh dear."
He looked around a bit more frantically, biting his lip worriedly.
"This can't be good at all."

"Oh? Why not? Do you often get dragged places like this for the giving of magic necklace babies?" the purple female asked, looking about almost suspiciously before grinning back at James.

Giving the woman a look that seemed more at home on a deer caught in headlights, James reached up around his neck to find an unfamiliar bit of jewelry there.
"...w-what...?"

"Thaaaaaaaat's your relic." She explained quickly, flashing a grin. "You kinda can't remove it so don't bother trying cause that'll get painful and annoying reaaaaally fast. It's supposed to be like the house for the soul of the deity you'll be caring for so the people who run this made it so you can't take it off and throw away or lose the kid."

James, not exactly made of stern stuff, turned pale as his confusion and bewilderment made him feel light-headed. Chatter about some sort of....deity? As in god? - made his head spin, and James quite suddenly fell back onto the bed in a dead faint.

Cami shrugged, counting her job as done, and got to half dragging him to the transporter to send him back to where they'd found him. When James woke up, he was back in the library, the only proof of the visit happening being the relic around his neck.
