Building your own greenhouse never got easier, or cheaper. This hoop-style alternative utilises pvc pipe to create the frame and structure of the building.

We built a greenhouse similar to this about 15 years ago, although ours was portable. We just used pipe for the bottom and attached the "hoops" with tee's, and attached them with tee's again at the top of each half-hoop. Then we sewed together chickenwire to cover the house, and lashed it to the hoops with wire. It made a very sturdy and easily-moved hoophouse.
The first summer, we grew cucumbers on the outside, and cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussels sprouts inside where it was a little shadier. Then in the spring (very early spring! like now), we covered it with plastic, then a tarp which could be adjusted for shade, and raised several hundred ducklings and goslings in it. It proved to be good protection from the coyotes and bobcats, and it was easy to regulate the temperature by simply adjusting the amount of shade and fresh air entering the house. The chickenwire covering kept ice and snow from collapsing the house.
A tornado finally tore the hoophouse up a few years ago, but I would definitely build one again. In fact, a half-width house used as a lean-to against a house is a great passive solar collector during the winter, and easily removed or repurposed when it warms up.
A small hoophouse like this, with an insulated north side, gets very hot very fast---as in sauna. Sweatlodge, anyone?

I'd love to have a proper green house. This year I'm more focused on figuring out a root cellar system.
