I first saw Rael at an airport in Dayton. This happened less than a month after he stood trial before an international court for claiming to be the first person to successfully clone a human being.

If you don't know, Rael is the author of several books and the founder of the cult religion, Raelianism, the largest and fastest growing UFO-based religion in the world.

When I saw him, he was dressed in a long white robe with a hood that streched skin-tight around his head. He had a beard and wore a huge metal medalion around his neck that looked similar to but wasn't quite a swastika. I know it was him because I've since seen pictures of him. He was just entering the concourse on his way to catch an international flight.

The books he wrote explain how we were created by aliens and were placed on this planet to mature as a species. Now, we're mature enough to know the truth and Rael was chosen as a prophet to inform us all. He has collected millions of dollars to build an "embassy" for the aliens, where they can land their ships and have a place to stay during their visits to Earth.

The original location of this embassy was originally going to be Israel. (Yes, it IS more than a coincidence, the similarity between "Israel" and "Rael".) They even changed their holy symbol, from a design patterned off the swastika, to a design shaped like a jewish star with a spiral in the center, hoping it would gain the support of the Jewish people.

The reason for Israel to be the chosen place? Israel is in the cradle of civilisation, and one of the Jewish names for God is Elohim. The race of aliens that created mankind told Rael that they are called the Elohim. Perhaps the Jews just got confused over the years... Nevertheless, they said no, repeatedly, despite many hard-to-ignore petitions from Rael and his followers.

But that's okay. The aliens came back and told Rael since the Jews wouldn't let him build on their land, he could build the embassy anywhere he needed to.

With apparently over a million followers worldwide, it is not uncommon to run into Raelians holding elaborate and exotic ceremonies in parks in major cities. Even though this is not the main way they worship, doing this spreads public awareness and brings new people into their movement. These public ceremonies almost always include a de-baptism ceremony.

Did I mention we were created by aliens?

I'm sorry, I can't take that seriously no matter how hard i try, though being created by aliens if a Lovecraftian idea, and HP Lovecraft IS one of my favorite authors, I cant' take them seriously. I always think religions like that are going to end like that cult where the leader killed everyone with poison Kool-aid.

You know...there was a time when I really saw this guy's way with things. I really did.

But honestly...any religion where the leader is supposedly the one and only prophet among them of some divine message typically has more questions surrounding it than answers.. besides, THIS:

THIS guy is supposedly the guy aliens selected as a high and mightly supergenious messenger of their word? He looks like Dr. Wiley in his younger years! What kind of poster boy is THAT?!

Anyway...you know, I heard ex-scientists of the Raelians posed nude for Playboy or something. I guess that just goes to show how far they've come along in recent years. whee

Now wouldn't it be weird if he built the embassy and aliens really did come down?

It's kind of like Scientology only we were an experiment of aliens, not reincarnations of alien souls. eek

Personally I find Raelianism more feasable than Scientology. Sicentology has more followers, but I attribute that to their secrecy. Not until a member reaches a certain level are they taught that we are reincarnated aliens. Raelians tell it "as it is" right from the very start.

If they really did clone the first baby, where is it?

If they really did clone the first baby, where is it?

Very good question. I did a bit of looking to try and find out.

The official answer from the Raelian website seems to redirect the question away from the subject:
Quote:
Q: Where is Eve, the clone baby?

A: The Raelian Movement is an organization which is completely independent from Clonaid. Clonaid is the name of a project (not a company), and it is managed by a raelian member named Dr. Brigitte Boisselier. Neither Rael nor the Raelian Movement bring any funds to it, and they have no relationship whatsoever with Clonaid, besides their moral support concerning the cloning technologies. For more details visit clonaid.com.

http://www.rael.org/e107_plugins/faq/faq.php?cat.1.14

On the Clonaid website I found this:
Quote:
If the attempts to declare us as criminals at the UN level are dropped then proof of our achievements will be published. They will not be published, however, if cloning is declared to be a crime against humanity, as some would like it to be. It would be foolish of us to give evidence that could be used against us. Meanwhile our reproductive cloning program will go on and our patients can be assured that we will always respect our non-disclosure agreements under any circumstances.

http://www.clonaid.com/news.php?11

It can be asserted then that the baby is living a normal life under foster parents, hidden away from the public eye. Not very convincing to the evidence for human cloning, but hey, the doctor had the child's best interest in mind. This does raise the moral factor though... If you can PROVE someone was cloned, they'd never rest the rest of their lives... Is it worth it?

Or perhaps it was a hoax from the start, cleverly designed to attract media interest in the Raelian Movement... I for one can say that my first time hearing about Rael was when he was in the news for the supposed human cloning.

I heard about Rael for the first time in my ethics class grade 9. At that time (4 years ago) it just seemed like a big joke to me and I have to say that it still does. I'm more than sceptical about the seemingly cloned baby. As you said the arguments for protecting the baby's identy are very doubtable. Whether it's just a hoax I don't know, but I just hope that it is! Because if they really did discover how to clone a human being, they don't seem like the most suited people to keep that knowledge!
