Chapter One

Monica walked out of the movies with her boyfriend of two years, Ben, and blew a strand of her long auburn hair out of her face. She smiled slowly up at Ben, who shook his head and smiled back.
“What?” She asked, and wrinkled her nose at him before smiling again.
“Nothing,” he replied, and flipped his short, layered blond hair, “I was just thinking that you have such a beautiful smile, but you never actually smile.”
“I smile around you all the time, goofball, maybe you should pay attention to me once it a while,” she shot back jokingly.
“Babe, I hate to break it to you, but I couldn’t if I tried. You’re all that’s ever on my mind-it’s just not possible Monica.” He told her, and then added, “You don’t smile,” teasingly.
“You’re such a sweetheart-I don’t know what I’d do with out you in my life-and yes I do too!” Monica countered, and she stuck her tongue out at him. He rolled his eyes at her before smiling at her again, and decided to drop the subject.
“When I’m with you, I can’t help but smile,” she murmured softly, and her big, brown puppy eyes peeked up at him from behind her lashes. He pulled her close and kissed her lightly, and then opened the door of his old, beaten up blue truck for her, and she hopped in.
Ben went around to his side and slid in, and then started the truck. Monica slipped her delicate, manicured hand into Ben’s larger, rougher one, and leaned her head on his shoulder. They drove on for a few minutes in silence.
“I had fun tonight,” Monica whispered, and Ben’s hazel eyes glanced down at her briefly before smiling.
“The night’s not over yet babe,” he said before he stopped the car. He took the keys out and dropped them into his pocket.
“Close your eyes, and don’t open them.” he ordered playfully as he opened the door and stepped out of the truck.
“Sir yes sir!” Monica replied, and he laughed as he shut the door. She leaned back against the seat as she listened to him rummage around in the back of the truck, pull something out and leave. She drummed her fingers on the dashboard, waiting for him to come back. A cold feeling started in the pit of her stomach, but Monica ignored it. Her car door opened.
“Keep your eyes closed,” he said before scooping her up into his arms. She shrieked then laughed. She listened to the sound of his feet as they padded on the ground, and what sounded like waves.
“Ben, where are we?” Monica asked, peeking up at him. He glanced down grinning.
“Hey-no peeking!” Ben replied. Monica wrinkled her nose before she closed her eyes again. “It’s a surprise,” he said. Suddenly he stopped, and Monica had that strange feeling that something bad was going to happen again. Ben took a large step before sitting down with Monica leaning against him.
“Okay, open your eyes,” he murmured into her hair, “Happy anniversary baby,” he said, and she gasped. A blanket was spread out on the sand, surrounded by candles, and a couple yards away waves rolled onto the beach, illuminated by the full moon.
“Oh wow,” Monica breathed, and she turned so she could look at him. She kissed him lightly. “I love you,” she said.
“Love you too,” Ben whispered back.

Kyrian stared broodingly across the vast expanse out ocean, arms crossed. The wind blew strands of his shaggy dark hair across his face, but he ignored it. Soft footsteps walked up behind him. Larissa came to a stop at his side. She glanced up at the moon.
“We need food,” Larissa said, and brushed a strand of her silver blonde hair behind her ear. “You know we do.”
“I know.” Kyrian said, and sighed.
“We can’t go on much longer without it.” She said, her violet eyes staring coldly up at him.
“I’m aware,” Kyrian said, but he sounded distant.
“Tonight.” Larissa persisted.
“Larissa, I realize this too. I can feel the hunger as well.” Kyrian replied, his voice tinted with impatience, but he still did not look at her.
Larissa stepped back. She raised her slender arms to the moon and tilted her head back, closing her eyes as she did. Her skin started to glow, a white light that rose about an inch up from her skin that flickered and rolled from her chest in waves. The light was brightest at her heart, but tapered off as it grew closer to her elbows, neck and knees, looking almost like a white glowing dress blowing in the wind, with the light at her hands and feet glittering.
The light steadied, and at the same time she floated upwards. She floated in front of Kyrian and stretched out her hand to him. He ignored it and did the same as she had with his head back, but he kept his arms at his sides. The light pulsed through him in time to each heartbeat, and he opened his eyes.
He soared above Larissa and nodded his head at the distant outline of the shore. Together they flew headed for it, flying side by side. Kyrian glanced once behind him, curling his lip at the lonely island they left behind.

Monica rested her head against Ben’s shoulder; one arm each wrapped around the others waist and their hands linked between them. He played with her fingers, and she closed her eyes in bliss.
“I’m glad I’m with you,” Ben murmured, and Monica lightly pressed a kiss onto his shoulder.
“I’m happy I’m with you too baby,” Monica whispered back. Ben tilted her chin back and looked into her eyes, his hazel eyes meeting her brown ones.
“I really do love you Monica, and I want to spend forever with you,” Ben whispered back softly. Monica leaned up and gave him a long, slow kiss before pulling away.
“I feel the same way,” She said quietly, he head on his shoulder gazing up at him. He gave her a quick kiss and shifted so her head lay against his chest, her arms folded over her stomach. She listened to the sounds of the waves and as he rifled through his small back sports bag next to him.
Monica rolled over and wrapped her arms around his waist, then tilted her head to the side to try to see what was in the bag, but he kept it to the side of him, out of view. She wrinkled her nose and looked out at the ocean before she closed her eyes and just listened to his heartbeat.
“Got it!” He said softly, but she ignored him and stayed where she was. He lightly tried to shrug out of her grip, but couldn’t. She squeezed her arms around him tightly for a second then relaxed her arms and glanced up at him quickly, smiling mischievously. He laughed and pulled at her arms again, but she hugged him tightly again before she released him and sat up with an air of curiosity surrounding her. She cocked her head to one side and put her hands on her knees.
Instantaneously Monica could tell he was nervous. He started to speak a few times, but stopped. He got to his feet and reached down to her. For a fleeting moment she thought she saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye, but when she turned her head to look t it there was nothing there.
She put her hands in his and as she climbed to her feet he pulled up. The force sent her up and he caught her against him before kissing her again. She stood with her back to the ocean, the moonlight lighting up his face. He opened his mouth again to speak, but then closed it. She wrinkled her nose at him and looked at him askance.
“Ben wha-” But he quickly leaned in and kissed her lightly to silence her. He got down on one knee. Thoughts whirled through Monica’s head as she started to put the pieces together.
“Monica Ann Daigler, I love you and I always want to be with you,” Ben started. He reached into his pocket and took out a small black box and opened it. Inside it was a ring. “Will you marry me?” Ben asked.
Monica swallowed, her throat clogged up with tears. Her heart swelled and felt like it would burst from happiness.
“Ben-” She started, but a movement in the shadows caught her eye. A lone man stood several yards away bare-chested, dressed in nothing but a pair of black shorts off which a single silver chain hung, staring at them. He was ruggedly handsome, and the light wind blew a few strands of his hair across his face.
A bad feeling went through her stomach at the sight of him, almost like a punch in the gut. Monica blinked, and the man was gone. She quickly scanned the beach, but it appeared deserted besides her and Ben.
“Baby?” Ben asked as he watched her worriedly.
“Sorry I got distracted-for a second I thought I saw someone,” Monica said, but she kept glancing around. “Yes Ben, I-Ben behind you! Ben!” Monica shouted as a dark shape hurtled towards them.
Ben turned his head just as a petite blonde woman grabbed him by his hair and snapped his head back. A small razor blade appeared in the woman’s hand and he quickly slashed Ben throat.
Red blood spurted up from his neck and sprayed onto Monica. She screamed and raised her hands to defend herself, but the woman took no notice of her. The woman pulled Ben down and started to drink from the red river that ran from his neck.
Monica stood horrified for a moment, unsure of exactly what had happened as fear and horror clouded her mind and made it difficult to think. She turned and started to run as her survival instincts finally started to kick in. Her feet slipped on the sand but she kept running.
All Monica could think about was running away and getting help-it didn’t seem possible what had happened. Her breath came fast and erratic, blocking out all other sounds. Suddenly the woman seemed to materialize out of nowhere. Monica tried to stop before she ran into the woman but slipped, falling down onto the sand. The woman laughed unfeelingly. A chill ran down Monica’s spine, making her shiver as she tried to catch her breath.
The woman was tall and ethereal, with silvery blonde hair that cascaded down her back in waves and eerie violet eyes that stared coldly down at Monica. She had beauty beyond comparison, her skin lightly tanned and unblemished. Despite looking extremely fragile there was an aura of deadliness that engulfed the woman and made her terrifying to look at.
“What are you?” Monica shouted at the woman as she breathed hard and shook.
“I am more then you are capable of understanding,” The woman replied tauntingly, her voice cool and musical. Monica’s hands clenched in the sand, and her right hand enclosed around something hard and smooth.
The woman’s hand shot forward, picking Monica up by the front of her shirt and easily lifting her into the air, proof of the woman’s strength. Monica threw the rock at her and the woman tutted.
“Not too effective, is it now?” The woman said her full lips pulled back in a jeering smile. Monica tossed the handful of sand she still held in her left hand directly into the woman’s eyes, making her shriek in pain and drop Monica, who rolled on impact and started sprinting away.
Monica’s lungs felt on fire when she stopped under a small cliff with tall weeds that obscured her from view. She bent over, hands on her knees as she tried to catch her breath. A rustle behind her made her gasp and swiftly turn around, but it was nothing more then the weeds swaying in the wind. She backed up slowly, and swiveled her head from left to right on lookout for the woman.
She ran into a solid brick wall of a man. She turned to see the man from earlier and screamed, but it was cut off as he snapped her neck in one fluid motion.

Kyrian broke the teenage girl’s neck with ease. He pierced the carotid artery in her neck and drank his fill. The heady smell of the blood wafted up to him and the warm blood rushed over his tongue. Kyrian rolled his eyes back in ecstasy and then gently laid the girl down onto the stone strewn sand. He wiped the back of his hand over his mouth and then picked the girl up carefully before he quickly strode back over to where Larissa stood, her body tense with fury at the girl.
Kyrian raised an eyebrow at her as she glared at the small form in his arms. She walked to the boy and jerked him up, carelessly tossed him over her shoulder and stalked back, anger radiating out of every controlled step she took. Once she reached his side they both tilted their heads back and allowed the moon’s light to run through their veins, fill their bodies and lift them up.
They flew through the air sinuously and followed the coastline while the gentle breeze lightly ruffled their hair. Soon the beach turned into rocky cliffs that rose up from the water. Kyrian’s eyes scanned the sheer face. Once he found what he was looking for he and Larissa flew towards it side by side.
They landed lightly into the mouth of the virtually undetectable cave carved out on the side of the cliff. Before her feet even touched the ground, Larissa dropped her load unceremoniously onto the sandy floor of the cave with a muffled thump and disappeared into the back of the cave. Kyrian set the girl down gently next to the boy and felt a stab of remorse go through him for their deaths.
It’s who you are. They would’ve died eventually anyways-you just sped up the process a bit. Kyrian thought to himself. He shook his head, trying to clear it as Larissa walked back in with to containers filled with gasoline in her hands. She unscrewed both caps in graceful movements and tipped the cans upside down, drizzling gasoline over both bodies. Kyrian reached into his pocket and withdrew a small box of matches. He lit one and threw it on the bodies.
The gasoline quickly caught fire and spread, and Larissa moved to stand next to Kyrian who folded his arms. Together they stood silently and watched as the flames grew higher and engulf the two bodies in flames.

Chapter Two

“Hey Mikey, you comin' down for the game tonight?” Jimmy asked as he passed Kyrian’s desk at the police station.
“Nah, sorry Jimmy I have to get home and start packing up. I really wish I could.” Kyrian replied as he looked up from typing.
“Aw that’s no fun now man. It’s on of your last days out here-you gotta stop by and have some fun before you head out. It won’t be as fun without you there man.” Jimmy persisted.
“I’m sure you and everyone will have a perfectly good time without me there Jimmy. I would if could, but I really need to finish getting everything packed for moving. This is actually my last night here.” Kyrian said.
“Yeah yeah I know I know. Can’t believe it. Seems like only yesterday you were walking in through the doors.” Jimmy said companionably. He used his white sleeve to wipe his forehead, which glistened with sweat. What little hair Jimmy had was plastered to his head, not a surprising fact as it was the middle of June.
“Try four years ago,” Kyrian said, still typing. There was an awkward pause for a second.
“You know what your problem is Mikey?” Jimmy asked as he made himself comfortable. He leaned up against Kyrian’s desk and sipped his can of soda. Kyrian arched an eyebrow at him.
“No Jimmy, why don’t you fill me in?” Kyrian said, humoring him. Kyrian glanced up at the clock quickly-it was eight thirty at night.
“You’re too darn involved in your work and stuff. You take life way too seriously.” Jimmy said lazily as he crunched up his soda can and tossed it into the wastepaper bag next to Kyrian’s desk. Kyrian laughed.
“Seriously man. When was the last time you just said forget it and did something reckless, had some fun?” Jimmy asked as he tipped back his soda and drained it. Kyrian rose up from his squeaky old chair.
“Jim, just because I don’t publicize my every move doesn’t mean I don’t have fun anymore. I can assure you I still do,” Kyrian said as he walked around the desk, clapping Jimmy on the shoulder as he walked by.
Kyrian walked out of the police office, waving to people as he passed by them. He walked at a leisurely pace through the town.
It was kind of James to invite me over. I know he terrified of me. Would’ve been interesting to see his reaction if I had actually taken him up on his offer though. He probably would’ve wet himself if I had.
It’s sad that this is my last day in this town. You’d figure that I would be accustomed to moving by now. Kyrian thought to himself, and he smiled a bit. He glanced at the sun. which was climbing lower. He picked up the pace as he neared the edge of town, breaking out into a brisk jog. He knew he was cutting it close today-if he was the sun’s rays touched him during sunrise or sunset, it was a slow, painful death.
Kyrian neared his simplistic white house with only minutes to spare. He let himself in through the front door, shut it and locked it behind him. The house was untouched, looking exactly as it had the day he had bought it. No furniture adorned the rooms, and there weren’t any household appliances or even a television plugged in anywhere. Despite that Kyrian did make sure to keep everything clean and he dusted and washed the floors regularly.
He walked through the house, closed all the blinds and locked the doors. He walked down the hallway to the where the large rectangle cut in the ceiling was. He pulled the door down and unfolded the ladder, ascending into the dark attic. He drew the ladder up and pulled the door closed, efficiently blocking out all light.
Kyrian pulled his laptop out of a large black bag and pressed the power button, watching as it whirled to life, its lights throwing the room into relief. He drummed his fingers over the keys as he waited for it to start up.
He typed in a search for houses up for sale in Missouri, browsing. Kyrian flipped through houses, but none in particular caught his interest.
First I need to figure out what town I want to transfer to. It’s pointless looking for houses. I’ll be sitting here for hours if I do. Kyrian thought. He narrowed down the search, selecting Bourbon, Missouri. He flipped through houses for a bit until he found one. Kyrian pulled out his cell phone; cheap, simplistic silver prepaid one and dialed.
At ten Kyrian finally climbed down from the attic for the final time, the black bag with all his worldly possessions slung over his shoulders. He walked out the front door, and shut it behind him.
Kyrian breathed in, taking in the different scents. Freshly cut grass from the neighbor’s yard wafted over and mingled with the greasy traces of a cookout, wet dog’s fur, and the rich smell of the earth and filled his nostrils. A light wind blew by, making the leaves on the trees rustle.
Kyrian tilted his head back, and the moonlight lifted him into the air. He quickly rose up above the town, angled his body to move faster. He flew past the town, past the beach and over the vast expanse of the ocean. His bag swung a bit and Kyrian adjusted it briefly before speeding up a bit more.
As he approached the dismal island on which Larissa lived he slowed a bit and straightened up in the air. The small island rose up from the water with jagged sides, making it difficult to approach from the water. It was a cold slab of gray rock, with a small cave set back on it. Kyrian slowly descended down onto the island, his feet lightly trailed on the rock before he touched the ground.
He adjusted the shoulder strap of the bag, and then set off at a brisk pace to the mouth of the cave. It was barely discernable in the night, seemingly nothing more then a pile of rocks. Kyrian stepped carefully on the broken cobblestones that led to the entrance. As he drew nearer it began to come into focus however, but before he could enter Larissa came out. She wore a pair of ripped jeans and a simple white blouse, and had a tan bag slung back over her shoulders as well.
Together they silently turned to look at the moon. They floated up, high above the island.
“Have you picked out a new town yet?” Larissa inquired without looking at him, her violet eyes staring forwards instead.
“I have a few ideas,” Kyrian replied coolly. Larissa waited, gave him a swift glance before focusing ahead yet again.
“I was thinking Missouri,” Kyrian continued, but Larissa shook her head.
“Somewhere by the ocean.” She ordered.
“I’m weary of the ocean Larissa.” Kyrian replied.
“I’m not. It’s too hard to hide on land anyways,” She persisted, but Kyrian shook his head.
“You’re young yet. You could live among the humans and not have to worry about finding another place in the wild.” Kyrian said, but this time it was Larissa who shook her head.
“I won’t live like cattle. I’ve yet to figure out how you do it Kyrian. They could just as easily break in and kill you while you sleep at dawn.” Larissa shot back. Kyrian was quiet for a moment.
“You doubt that I am meticulous in protecting myself? Do you believe that someone could enter my house uninvited?” Kyrian questioned her, and he raised an eyebrow in her direction.
“No, I don’t. But people are becoming more high tech as they go. It’s much easier then it used to be back in the days of knights and castles, keep that in mind. One day your trust in the people not to harm you is going to be what gets you killed.” Larissa replied to him.
“You should know that I’m older then knights and castles as you so eloquently put it. It’s your trust that no one will find you that will get you killed. It’s on a matter of time before a human finds wherever you made your home and kills you in your sleep. You sleep without the benefit of a locked door remember that.” Kyrian retorted, and they both fell silent.
“Missouri will do,” Larissa said at last, and Kyrian nodded in reply. They flew over the land, moving rapidly. The coasts of Californian beaches were long gone as the miles melted together.
They stopped for the dawn in a small town in Oklahoma, rented a room at a small town motel. As they walked through the room they covered the windows and locked the door.
“Light might still get in,” Larissa said disapprovingly as she looked at the flimsy blinds the motel provided. Kyrian shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m sleeping in the bathtub, I’ll be fine.” Kyrian said, and he grabbed a flower printed pillow off the bed, stuffed it under his arm and walked into the bathroom. Just as he started to shut the door Larissa opened it and came in next.
She glanced distastefully around the room but said nothing. Kyrian shut the door, and she put the flower comforter from the bed in front of the door, ensuring that no sun could get through during dawn.
Larissa stepped into the bathtub and pulled the shower curtains closed around her, making Kyrian smile in the darkness. He took his pillow and made himself comfortable in the corner. As the first of dawns ray touched the earth, both fell into a deep sleep.
