Ranza bounced from room to room of Miss Exi's small cottage, her excitement barely contained. Today was, quite simply, her birthday. It was the one year anniversary of the day her mother had found her, former parrot, in the snow outside their apartment building. She smiled to herself and repositioned her crown on her head- gold plastic and rhinestones, fit for a king. Exi had given it to her when she arrived so that everyone would know that she was the birthday girl.

Later there'd be cake and a scavenger hunt, but people kind of needed to arrive before any of that could happen. She made her way out the front door and sat down on the steps to watch the road. The little white bus with no driver was going back and forth today to ferry the guests in. (She sincerely hoped people would come!) It was cold, but not too cold. Snow still clung to the ground, and it wasn't warm enough for it to melt, but it wasn't windy - it was just crisp. The weather was on her side.

Ranza wrapped her scarf around her face and shivered a bit. Feathers and coats didn't mix.

Dalal had been excited for days. A birthday party, how awesome! She had never been invited to one before and Lizzi had helped her to find a nice present for her friend.

Now it was finally time to go and Dalal was picked up my a little white bus. Curiously she looked out of the window and hoped that Ranza would like her present. Although she wasn't that much older the feathery girl seemed to be more experienced in life, Dalal thought.

She was dressed in her favourite loose purple pullover with a smiley on it who poked his tongue out. Lizzi had been forced to wash it quickly, otherwise Dalal wouldn't have gone. Luckily she had already told her so yesterday.

As they arrived Dalal climbed out of the bus and spotted Ranza right away. "Happy Birthday!" She exclaimed and held on to the neatly wrapped present she was carrying.

"Dalal!" cried Ranza, hopping up from the step. She bounded over to her friend and eyeballed the gift but didn't ask about it - that would be a bit rude, right? "Thanks for coming!"

She led the other girl towards the house. "I was waiting for people to get here," she explained. "You can go inside if you want. I think there's cocoa," she added, smiling. "Or you can wait with me?"

She plopped back down onto the step, stretched her legs out, and straightened her crown.

A woman in a very eighties prom dress emerges from the kitchen, her hair pulled into a side ponytail. Exi had just recently watched a half dozen brat pack movies, and is most certainly caught up in the.. allure.. of the 80s era.

"Righteous! You girls having fun?" she chimes, setting down a fresh batch of cookies. "Call if ya need anything, dolls! Cool beans! Okay!"

Thankfully for everyone involved, she disappears back into the kitchen, her lovely domain. Her son, dressed in neon, but not quite a sore thumb because of it, plays in his playpen with a rocket ship, making buzzy noises to himself while swinging it through the air.

The little white bus pulled up to the cottage once more, now with the addition of a tiny face squished against one of its windows. For the duration of the ride, Sabina had pressed herself there looking wildly around for the birthday girl. Now the time had come, her voice carried before she bounded off the bus, "Ranzaaaaa!"

Wobbling left and right with her attempt to simultaneously run and hold onto a wide, colorfully wrapped present, Sabina managed to reach the steps without slipping. Her hair in short ponytails and her cheeks flushed by the cold, she smiled at another older girl she didn't recognize then once more at Ranza. "Happy birthday Ranza!" she chirped.

Dalal smiled slightly and admired the crown on Ranza's head before handing the neatly wrapped package over to her. "For you." She said and was almost interrupted by the Exi. She nodded at her question and wondered if that person was Ranza's Mom but didn't say anything.

"I'll wait with you." Dalal decided and sat down beside Ranza on the steps. They were a bit cool and her mantis behind didn't like the temperature much, but still it looked like sitting on stairs was a thing people did at parties.

As Sabina approached Dalal wondered if she had seen her once before, but was quite sure that she hadn't. She decided to be quiet and just watch. And hopefully Ranza would like the present she had chosen. In there were some tattoos and a cool pocket watch.

Ranza smiled at Dalal and set the present down on the steps without opening it for now. She got up and ran over to the newly-arrived younger girl. "Sabina!" she squealed, because she was in a squealing mood. "It's so good to see you!"

"Thank you!" she said. "D'you wanna go inside? Or you could stay out here with me an' Dalal - that's Dalal," she added, pointing to the girl on the steps. "She's cool. We're waiting for more people. Do you want a cookie?"

Quincy had never really been to a birthday party outside of family and friends and must say that he was rather intrigued. After having a small celebration after he shot up a few inches and miraculously began speaking in relatively unhindered sentences, he was more than excited to see the eclectic girl once again. In his hands rest a small wrapped package, newspaper funnies with a few colorful ribbons. Inside contained a small collection of bits and bobs; a cog stuck together with a few blunt nails to resemble an airforce pin, a few brightly colored marbles and jacks, a large bouncy ball and a simple blank dusk-sky colored journal. It wasn't much but he hoped she would enjoy the gifts.

Aaron stood behind him, hand resting in the boys hair while the other arm held up his orange squish-brother of an alien. The guardian bent down to Quincy's ear level, pushing a cellphone into his hands. "If you want to leave press 1 for me and 2 for Kilani. Have fun."

"Kay, dad." Quincy grinned and wagged his tail before waving to his father as he walked back to the driver less bus with minimal confusion...he'd probably forget the entire ride.

"You too! And your crown's so sparkly!" Sabina said in awe, wiggling on the spot. The wrapped set of toy swords in her arms prevented her from giving the birthday girl a hug, a condition which if left unremedied could be disasterous. Sabina was not one to live without hugs.

"Here, here," she said impatiently, thrusting the present forward at Ranza and maneuvering her arms so that she could squeeze her friend affectionately. Once satisfied, she released Ranza to wave at the other girl. Ranza said she was cool therefore it must be so.

"I'm fine," she answered decidedly; a cookie sounded really good but the other two, with their cool-and-older mystique thing going on, weren't having one at the moment thus she figured she'd wait as well. So, playing it cool, she looked from one girl to the other and asked, "Who we waiting for?"

"Hi." Dalal said to Sabina and looked at her skeptically for a moment before she decided to give her a try. After all she was younger and she had to teach her the lesson of life: Be cool and hate boys.

Still she felt a tiny nagging bit of envy in the back of her mind. Hopefully her present would be better than hers. "Don't know... are more people coming?" The mantis girl turned towards Ranza. "No boys, right?"

"A couple more," nodded Ranza, waiting. She puzzled over Dalal's question. If her answer was wrong, would she leave? But if she lied, Dalal would be angry...

"Just one or two," she answered. "Good boys. Not bad boys like stinky smelly Taig. Boys like Quincy." She liked Quincy. He knew who was boss, and was good at imagining. "Do either of you know Quincy?" she asked.

"Uh uh..." Dalal said and her antennae twitched slightly. "I once met him. He was ok for a boy."

The mantis girl wondered how parties were supposed to be like. She wanted her friend to unwrap the present and be happy - now! Dalal impatiently moved from one foot to another.

Quincy's ears perked up upon hearing his name as a sudden tightness grew at the end of his spine, filtering into his tail. It was like in the morning when you know someone called for you but you want to keep sleeping and further exacerbate the issue of being torn from running up and letting them know of your presence or sleeping for just a few minutes. For Quincy, it was like second nature as he hurriedly stepped over, stopping before the gaggle of females he had once met, but his attention was focused on Ranza. He paused abruptly, almost clicking his heels together in an action that wasn't his own and smiled sheepishly, remembering where he was and what he was doing here.

"Uh... Happy Birthday Captain Ranza!" He said excitedly, wrapped gift thrusted outwards towards the parrot girl. "It's very nice to see you again." By now his grin was large and genuine, tail wagging at a jaunty pace. He stepped back and looked towards Dalal, nodding in a short, curt but polite greeting.

"Miss Dalal." He tilted his head to Sabina and felt a rush of memory, falling and the young girl asking if he had any terminal diseases. "Sabina!"

Scanning the small crowd outside of the cottage, Aaron felt somewhat out of place. He'd seen a few of the children before, back at the chocolate factory long ago, but he didn't know any of them that well. Not that he knew anyone particularly well, but for all that Taig annoyed him deeply, Aaron kind of wished that the quirky boy was sitting next to him on the bus, making remarkably inappropriate comments and taking the focus off of the dark haired boy.

Spotting the girl with the bug butt who had seemed like she'd rather eat brussel sprouts than so much as look at a boy, he sighed and wondered if he could just stay on the bus until it left again on its route. Understanding machines though, he expected that this one would not depart again until its passengers had disembarked, he being the only "passenger" on its latest cycle.

Oh well; Ranza wasn't that bad...after all, she had feathers too, and Aaron's small, crisply wrapped box contained a feather brush that he'd designed himself to flatten and put straight bent feathers after sleeping on them wrong. Who else could appreciate it, besides the little green-haired boy who probably wouldn't know how to work it for a long time?

Maybe she could tell him how the bus worked so smoothly with no driver, Aaron thought as he hopped off the bus and its doors shut behind him.

Ranza grinned and took the gift from Quincy. She was happy that everyone was getting along so far - a cohesive crew was less likely to mutiny and all that. She invited Quincy to sit on the steps and then peered off down the path. There seemed to be another guest on their way from the bus, a boy with black feathers.

She knew him from somewhere! Oh, right! Aaron. Well, he was okay. Not as bad as Luc. She waved him over and hoped Dalal wouldn't be too offended by the sudden presence of Y Chromosomes. Not that Dalal would know what those were. She doubted Dalal had a four foot tall stack of Galactic Geographic magazines in her living room. Further more, she doubted Dalal would know how to read them if she did, which did not reflect poorly on the mantis girl, but on the parenting skills of her guardian(s).

She waved Aaron over and surveyed the group that had assembled. A pretty fine, if a bit motley, crew, if she did say so herself.

"Miss Exi set up a treasure hunt for us," she explained, and motioned to the plate of pastries. "And made us cookies."
