I've just been thinking about what got me into guitar and what is forming me now.

For me I would say it was my friends and my dad. A few of my friends play guitar a lot, while my dad just is a casual player and plays whenever he has time along with piano. I would say now Joe Satriani and Steve Vai..and pretty much any other guitarist I can find are helping shape me now.

Anyway, what was your first influence that you into guitar and what is influencing you now?

My parents and friends supported me which first got me into it when I was thinking about it.
I am influenced by bands like Pantera, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Guns N Roses.
Guitarists that influence me are Dimebag Darrell Lance Abbott, Rhandy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Slash and Mick Thomson.

Well, My first influence was when I was 6 and played my bigger brothers guitar. then My dad started to teach me when he bought me a Gibson epiphone SG. Then I fell in love with AC/DC so now my major and biggest influence is Angus Young, an a little influence of just looking into the future and picturing myself playing my own music on stage with me and my friend(azure sakai94)

I guess my first influence was Brad Delson of Linkin Park, back then he was one of the few reasons I wanted to play guitar, back then a friend of mine had just started playing guitar too, so if he could do it, I thought I could too.
Now a days my teacher influences me, apart from stuff from magazines, classical music, rock, metal stuff like that, not just specific guitarists ( p.s. my Puerto Rican lineage is also an influence, mainly in the way I play clean, and that my guitar isnt strapped around my knees like most american players XD)

I know most people always say famous people like Ywngie, Vai, Satriani, Van Halen and all the other very famous guitar players but I listen to alot of underground black/death/folk metal.

And people inspire me with their talent and guitar playing of course. None of these are those famous guitarists.

Vegard "Ihsahn" of Emperor - Plays lead guitar and is vocalist too.
Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom - Same as Ihsahn.
Jari Maenpaa; ex-Ensiferum and Wintersun - His guitar playing and songs he writes/plays are just very inspiring for me.
Riku Hopeakoski of Catamenia - Good guitarist.
"Satyr" Wongrave of Satyricon - Just love all his work, writing, guitars and everything. Pure black metal.

My first influence was Eric Clapton. When I saw him playing the Over the Rainbow stratocaster, I knew I wanted to learn. Now, my influences are people like Lindsay Buckingham, Mark Knopfler, and David Gilmour.

Well, my main influences are my friends. I played guitar when I was 7, but I ditched it for dance (I was slow, leave me alone.) Now I'm 14, and I picked it back up. I love AC/DC, Guns 'n' Roses and Ozzy... My friend Sarah , not on Gaia, wants to start our own music, but, I dunno....

In the metal community, which is generally underground let's remember.
I know Emperor and CoB are big, CoB is very very big, but Catamenia? They are my favourite band but not often do I see many people talk about them eg in the Metal Guild or anything.

Do you know of/like Rotting Christ?
Their music is pretty inspiring to me, it always gets me in the mood to play guitar and write songs. mrgreen

And what'd you mean by you must become initiated?

My dad use to take me to guitar shops when I was young (he's a major instrument collector). However, I was taking classical piano lessons at the time, so that's what I played. But I always liked to randomly strum the guitars whenever I was there. After awhile though, I just lost interest in music in general for a couple of years, because I really hated my classical piano lessons.

When I got older though, I started listening to rock...it was probably the Smashing Pumpkins that mostly got me into the guitar. My parents found it a surprise and even ridiculous that I wanted to get back into the music business... but after over a year, my dad finally got out a Les Paul and gave it to me, which I play fairly heavily now.

Moral of the story - let your kids pick the music and the instrument. xp
