The night was cold, even for the dark-furred Helix that usually reveled in extreme weather. His paws seemed to burn from the snow that was packed tight to the rocky ground, yet somehow he found solace in the pain. So many years of loneliness... even his hurts felt friendly to him. Whereas he once had a place to call home, now all he could do was roam and hurt, and hope that perhaps someday, some one would come along to bring him out of his dark past.
Armand's head perked up as an unfamiliar scent hit his sensitive nose. 'Another Helix?' he thought, his red eyes narrowing. He gazed along the horizon, where the smallest strip of the sunset still remained. A shape... Was it another Helix? Or perhaps prey to sooth his hungry stomach? Or... perhaps he didn't care about the differences.

Darkness was gaining as Kaya sped through the snow. The sun was gone, she was lost. At least in the dark it was harder to see her brilliant green fur against the snow. But now, with that thought, the fur on her back rose... she was not alone, and hadn't sensed the other presence, until she wasn't far from it. Panicking, she prepared to run. But her blood ran cold as she saw a pair of red eyes upon her...

Armand began to trot forward, the shape in front of him growing ever larger. Even though the light was dim, he could just barely pick out the rich green fur and glowing emerald eyes. 'Ah, what a beauty,' he purred in his mind, though his face was set in a hostile grimace, his eyes shining red. Others might be afraid of the night, but it was his time to come alive. Night was day to him--darkness was light.
He smirked as he saw the other try to run, and dashed in front of her to cut her off. He simply stood there, his eyes running over the green form. What an unusual color for the North.
"Hello there..." he purred in a dark voice, a mischievous smile settling on his lips.

Kaya felt as if her heart was in danger of bursting. It was dead dark out, and she couldn't make out much of his form but his eyes, which seemed to put her in a trance.... She couldn't help but think that they were pretty. 'What's wrong with you?! Buck up!' She thought spitefully to herself. She wasn't one to be undermined by just anyone. But something about this helix scared her witless. Still, she pulled herself into a tall, proud position. "Greetings" She mumbled, refusing to seem weak. Her eyes darted past him... nowhere to go. She resisted the urge to bear her fangs. "Just heading home, so if you will excuse me?"

"Home?" Armand voiced sarcastically, pacing in a circle about her now. "What is a home, truly? A place to live? That could be anywhere. A place for your family? Heh, I've never had that. A place for your heart, perhaps?" He prowled right up to the female, chuckling inside at the desperate search for escape that her eyes made. His fangs were bared in a foreboding smile as he murmured into her ear, almost seductively, "But I do not have one of those."
Then he backed up, not wanting to upset her too badly. After all, what fun was a game without willing players?
"You will not find your habitation in this darkness, or in the snowstorm that threatens. Thus, I suppose you are stuck with me, hmm?" he purred, then straightened. "My name is Armand. Let it forever more be in the darkest corners of your mind."

Kaya couldn't tell whether her shivers were coming from his hot breath in her ear, or the sorrow in his words. She was calmer now and felt foolish for fearing him. After all, he was just another helix... right? The wind was picking up and it was already starting to snow. She would have to go with him regardless. "I'm Kaya. It has been a week or so since my last meal, and I'm exhausted. Where will you be staying?"

Armand's brow raised as he noticed her sudden relaxation. Did she really trust him so easily? Ah, but she most likely did not yet know what he was, or the extent of his dark heart. Oh well... even his malicious mind could not disagree with the fact that a bit of company would be welcome. At least for one night...
"Exhaustion is no condition to be in while in the north. One could simply lose their will to live, and lay down and die..." he murmured, though not only to Kaya. Many times had he wanted to fade away, but he had to hang on... just in case he found someone that warmed his soul.
"My dwelling is a cave in a stony outcrop, not too far from here. The inner reaches are secluded from the wind and snow. I also have meat stored in the entrance chamber, where the cold keeps it from spoiling. In case of a stormy day, right?" he said, turning around and facing in the homeward direction. He glanced back at the green female, giving a sly, yet slightly sympathetic smile. "You may rest there. Without harm from me, I promise."

'Why does he say such dismal things?' She wondered half-heartedly. She followed him from the back, keeping a watchful eye, or two, on him the whole way. At the mention of food, her stomach pains were too great to decline his generous offer. It wasn't too long of a journey, though the bitter cold probably made it seem longer than it actually was. Once at the cave he spoke of, Kaya felt slightly panicked; the mouth of the cave was almost halfway covered in snow already... and the possibility of being snowed in with... Armand... almost made her turn around. But would she last out there? No. She would have to risk it with Armand. And despite her famine, she remained composed and would wait to be offered food and sleeping arrangements... It was just in her nature to be overly polite.

Armand smiled to himself as he sensed Kaya's unease, but he hid the expression as he turned to face her. No need scaring her off, then having her die for no reason. There always had to be a reason for death, and senselessness would simply not do while he had a chance to prevent it.
He motioned towards the cave opening with a shrugged shoulder, a sly light shining in his bloody red eyes. "Well, here rests the humble abode. Enter if you dare, I suppose. Though you really have no other choice... But please, fear me not. If I had wanted to maim you, I would have done it before you even knew I was there." At that moment, he allowed his expression to softened only the slightest, offering her a piece of comfort. Then he turned, and climbed over the growing snow barrier to the dark confines of his lonely home.
Once inside, he motioned at a small stack of red meat in a black corner. "Food, for you. Take whatever you wish, and join me in the deeper confines. It will be warmer, I assure you." He turned, and disappeared as a wraith in to the darkness of the cave.

Kaya looked away shyly at his words. She didn't know whether to ease up, or be offended. She followed him inside and immediately went at the meat, but ate it mannerly. Once full, 'the itis' was starting to kick in, and she felt her muscles lax, and her eyelids become so heavy, she thought she would have to find her way through the cave blind. But she managed to find Armand in a back area, as instructed. Not knowing whether he was asleep or not, she laid herself a yard or so away from him, and was out before she hit the ground.
She was in a deep sleep, but came to slight consciousness a few times, only thinking of how freezing it was. Once, she awoke, and found herself tightly pressed-up against Armand and became alarmed. It was much warmer next to him, but she was embarrassed all the same. It was no brighter in the cave than it had been when she first got there (not that she expected it to be), but she had no idea how long it had been. She didn't know whether to wake Armand, or just go back to sleep...

Armand was glad to have seen the female dig into the food, knowing that he probably wouldn't eat it. Despite his joy of stalking, hunting, and killing, he lacked the appetite to eat regularly as a normal helix would do. Besides, while remaining at home in the north, all he usually did was roam and sleep. Nothing of that sort required much energy, and he never had a reason to expel any tiring emotions.
He had fallen asleep quite quickly, surprised at himself for trusting the female so easily, for he really knew nothing about her. But she seemed the timid type, not capable of doing any damage to a living soul.
Of course, he had once thought himself to be the same.
He awoke shortly after, noticing a strange warmth against his side. It felt... like another helix. Slightly on guard, he opened his sleepy eyes and regarded the dozing female. She... was beautiful. He thought that the world was void of beauty, but here lay an angel in rest, though his mind tried to deny it. If only his past loves would had stayed as close as this stranger, perhaps he would have turned out different. Maybe he would've had the capability to love.
But not now. Despite his sudden, alien yearn towards the soft, sleeping female, he slowly rose and walked to a lone corner, sinking down to lay his head between his silver paws. He had been so absorbed in his sudden emotion that he hadn't even noticed the increased breathing which signaled her as awake, yet he couldn't take his eyes off of her. Their ruby depths glittered in the darkness as the dark emotions in his soul swirled forever round.

He must have been awake; she felt him rise and move. She lifted her head, and expected to see him lying away from her. But her heart skipped a beat when she turned her head to see him staring at her. There was something strange in his eyes. Was he upset about her being up against him? Kaya opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. It seemed like they stared at each other for hours, until she managed to tear her eyes away from his. She looked down at her paws. She wasn't used to feeling so uncomfortable and embarrassed. But she reasoned that it wasn't because she was afraid of him... she didn't know why he made her heart race. She also wasn't sure she liked it. "Why..... What's..." She wasn't sure how to word her question without being rude or too blunt. She decided to go with the statement, "You're different." Kaya didn't look up from her paws, but hoped he would elaborate without her having to directly ask him anything.

Different. There was the magic word... of course, he reveled in that word most of the time, taking advantage of his difference in order to keep others away from him. But something about this female made him a bit sad when she said it, like it just wasn't meant for her to say. However, it was the truth. He was different, always had been, always would be.
"Yes, I am different," he mumbled, lifting his head. " 'Vampire' is the word you're searching for." His red eyes narrowed, though not in hatred. There was a troubled feeling in his heart. If this female stirred him so, then how would he cope with her fear, as well as everyone else's? Yes, he loved the fear. Ate it, as he ate food. But it didn't suit this beautiful female. It didn't suit Kaya.
"I am different in many ways, all of them being unpleasant for normal Helix's. I could be considered a nightmare. Is that what you think of me? Will you run from me?" he asked, his voice growing stronger and more sorrowful at every word. Yet, even as the strange feeling in his heart took control of his words, there was an underlying anger, frustration, at every normal helix running from him. He couldn't stand even the things he loved.

Kaya was on her feet in an instant. "Vampire?!" She almost continued with 'That's not possible!' but thought better of it, and merely stood there with her mouth gaping. She listened to his words with a churning stomach. There was so much pain in his voice, but it was his eyes that made her believe him. After all, Kaya was not gullible.
Slowly she relaxed and sat. “I knew you were different.” She whispered to herself more than to Armand. What seemed to be a long silence followed as Kaya processed his words. She spoke to the floor ahead of her as she carefully formed her words.
"You wouldn't hurt me..." It wasn't a question. This might explain her first vibes from him, but she couldn't see him as a nightmare. She looked up at him, ears floppy and eyes soft she said, " I will not run from you... unless you give me a reason too. But you can't help what you are. I mean, who am I to judge?"
She wanted to let him know she didn't see him a nightmare or monster or anything of the sort. But she just sat there, looking at him, head hung low. It felt strange to feel sympathy for someone like Armand... a vampire.
