So, what songs are you guys working on?

I'm learning how to play Weezer's Say It Aint So. My band and I are planning to gig that song along with Hash Pipe. I'm mainly a rhythm player and I've stuck with that since I started, and the riffy bits and the solo are really kicking my a**, even though they're relatively simple. Our lead guitarist was recently kicked out, so wish me luck on getting my solo chops. sweatdrop

Practice your scales and work on using your scales a bit to solo. Also, practice muting with both hands. Something that may help with speed, but may take some practice, is to keep your fingers as close to the strings as you can without actually touching the strings.

But of course, if you're learning another person's song you won't get it down all at once. Sometimes it's necessary to get the frets down before you put it to the correct tempo. What I do is learn a little piece at a time and get it down at the correct speed before moving on to the next. Say there are 5 bars, I'll learn 1-2, then I'll learn 2-3, then 3-4, then 4-5. The reason I start with 2 seperate bars is so I can put them together at the correct speed. The reason I then start with the bar I left off at before learning the next one is so I won't studder when playing, transfering to the next part of the song as I go on to the next part that I just learned.

But songs I'm working on: Soothsayer, by Buckethead and Crystal Planet by Joe Satriani... Though I mostly just play scales and such and make up my own things. I haven't been able to play since I left home to my first duty station in Norfolk. The only guitar on my ship is in the Chapel and I want to use the internet to talk to my girlfriend when I can.... So instead of staying on the ship after I'm done with work I go to the building where I am now and use the wifi =x Point being I'm trying to learn the song but haven't had the chance to continue learning from where I left off in a few weeks...

Heh, Soothsayer kicks a**.
Right now, I'm trying to get down an amazing solo acoustic piece by Antoine Dufour titled Ashes in the Sea. It's an awesome song, and I'm hoping to have it down by February 19th, the date of my school's talent show.

I'm working in a few things at the moment. Right now I'm working on Eric Clapton's cover of 'Groaning the Blues' and 'On an Island' by David Gilmour. The latter is fairly easy, its just hard to get all the phrasing right, whilst the first one is a bit more tricky.

Been working on a couple of my own songs one called God's Eye:Helix Nebula and the other one is Chasing the Opposition. For God's Eye I'm working out some over leads and for Chasing the Opposition I'm workin on the arrangement.

But as far as songs from other bands, I'm working on the solo in Tornado of Souls (megadeth), some Scar Symmetry songs, and Michael Angelo Batios teachings (does that count?)

I'm learning a bunch of Symphony X songs. I'm learning 'Wicked' by ear, and 'Of Sin and Shadows's solo by ear. I can play it, but i'm still perfecting 'The Eyes of Medusa'... I really want to learn 'The Divine Wings of Tragedy' and, especially, 'The Odyssey'. biggrin

I finished Ashes in the Sea and then learned Drifting by Andy McKee, and now I'm trying to learn Rylynn by Andy McKee.
