There wasn't a cloud to be seen for miles. A soft breeze blew, creating a small wave motion in the tall grass of the open meadow. A few birds flew by, singing their joyous songs in celebration of the beautiful day. In the midst of the scene, a small foal lay in the middle of the meadow, mostly hidden by the tall grass.
He let out a small sigh as he watched a couple of birds fly by, feeling terribly alone. He had gotten separated from his herd during a fierce storm one night, and hadn't seen anyone since. I should just give up. It's been too long now. The foal let out a small whine before slowly and awkwardly standing up. He still hadn't quite grown into his legs yet. I wonder if there are any streams nearby to drink from. He perked up his ears for a second and listened. I think I hear some water. I can smell some on the breeze as well. Letting his senses guide him, he bound off through the tall grass in the direction of the stream.

 Xiang lapped at the cool, fresh, crystal clear water of the stream. Her first few days of life had been lonely, without another one like her in sight. She'd hatched all alone, and it's rather sad, being the only one of one's kind, though hopefully she'd see someone else shaped like her soon. That would be wonderful.
Looking up, she saw the answer to her hopes and dreams and wishes on the evening star: someone else who was shaped like her, only this one was brown. Maybe he or she was friendly and could tell her more about their kind?

As Toshiro came closer to the stream, he smelled something else besides just water. Another Kirin? he though to himself hopefully, continuing his leaping bounds. When he caught sight of the other foal lifting its head, he slowed himself down to a walk and carefully approached the stream. "Um, hello," he greeted somewhat shyly, lowering his head momentarily to get a few laps of water. "I'm Toshiro. Who are you?" His ears swiveled around to listen for her answer. He hadn't met anyone else his age before, so this was rather new for him.

The situation was entirely new for Xiang, as the filly called herself. She raised her head eagerly to answer him. "Hi, Toshiro! I'm Xiang," she said, suddenly shy. "Ummm...I hope this isn't rude...but I've never seen anyone like you or me before now, so...what, exactly, are we?"

(I know the front page says their eyesight is limited to respond to movement, so how much does that mean that they actually see? lol. Just wondering. XD wink
Toshiro tilted his head thoughtfully at the filly's question. "Um, well, I believe my parents referred to our kind as 'Kirin'," he replied with a soft smile. It faded into a frown however when the implication of her question dawned on him. "You hatched alone?" he asked, suddenly very sad for her. Sure, he had lost his family, but at least he had gotten to know them for a little while...

"Yeah, I hatched alone, Toshiro. We're called kirin? Are there more of us somewhere? You have a family?" She suddenly felt sad--sad that she was all alone, and sad that Toshiro was separated from his family. Then a thought crossed her mind. "Hey, Toshiro, we can be family for each other, right?"

Toshiro was surprised by the sudden flood of questions and wasn't sure which to answer first. He gave a small smile and decided to start by answering her last one first. "Sure, we can be a family. I'd like that." He paused for a moment to take another lap from the tiny stream before continuing. "Yes, there are others of our kind out there. I had a family before, but we got separated during a really bad storm." He paused again, reminiscing for a moment. "Hey, would you like to run around for a bit? It's a nice day today."

Xiang, smiled, truly happy now. She had a family now and she wasn't alone anymore. "Race you!" she called, taking to her creamy heels as she dashed from beneath the trees. "Come on, Toshiro!" she called back, laughing as she went.

"Hey, you got a head start!" Toshiro called after her, leaping nimbly over the small stream before giving chase. He leapt through the tall grass like a gazelle, quickly starting to catch up to her. He may not have been able to see her too well, but he could certainly follow the sounds of the grass being forced out of her path, her hooves quickly and lightly making contact with the ground, and her pealing laughter. He picked up his pace so as not to lose her.

Hearing his hoofbeats getting closer, Xiang slowed down to let him catch up. She had every intent on outrunning him once he thought he'd caught up. She couldn't help but giggle at the thought and the feel of the grass as it bent out of the way of her tiny body on its long, slender legs.

Toshiro's ears swiveled around to the front as he heard Xiang start to slow down. Was she getting tired? Or did she have something planned? Didn't really matter either way to him. He nipped her playfully on the tail as he caught up before pacing himself to run along beside her. This felt rather nice really. "Are you just getting tired or is there another reason you slowed down?" he asked with a smile. "And where are we racing to anyway?"

 It was the sound of their running and their laughter that woke Lachtna - he'd been sleeping some distance away from the stream, enjoying the warm sun and springy grass. Now awake, he yawned and stretched out his legs before picking up his head, ears pricked. "What's goin' on over there?" he called out to the two, still sounding slightly sleepy, though also rather interested.

Toshiro had been so preoccupied with Xiang that he hadn't even noticed the other male's presence until he spoke up. The foal slowed down quite a bit and turned in the direction of the voice, ears perked up and listening. "Hey!" He greeted, gesturing for Xiang to follow him and heading towards the other foal. "We were just racing. Did you want to join us?"

"Racing?" he asked, sounding a little unsure as he got to his feet, wobbling a bit a he yawned again. Before speaking any further, he shook himself rather hard, trying to get rid of the remaining effects of his nap, ears flapping audibly. "Well... okay!" he decided after another moment of consideration, a chipper note in his voice now. "I'm Lachtna, by the way... who are you guys? I don't know your smells..."

Xiang hadn't had a chance to respond before they noticed a new foal, Lachtna. She slowed down and watched quietly. "I'm Xiang, and this is Toshiro," she said, not cheerful. "Do you want to join our family?" Maybe Lachtna was lost, too, and would like a family to belong to. Anyway, just playing with him would be fun.
