It was astonishing, Kash thought as she made her way through the mall. Ever since she had traded snakes with her sister things had been going her way! To prove it, she was holding a brand new MP3 player that she had gotten on sale from the shop she once hadn't been able to enter at all!
It kind of sucked that she hadn't gotten the chance to download some music to it, but at least nothing had exploded around her when she went in! And her daddy had even bought her a twenty dollar itunes card so she could download things as soon as she got home!
Of course he had bought both a blue mp3 player and the same card for her sister, but she had been the one to find it! And now she was looking for a new shirt, because she was positive that she wouldn't be dropping things down her shirt after this. New clothes would ROCK. Maybe she'd even get the chance to try white one again!

She had the volume on her own MP3 player turned all the way up. It sounded better that way, even though she was listening to basically the same songs. Not that she liked them, because really she didn't. Just, Luka expected her to like these songs, so she tried really hard to do just like he expected. Even if it included standing in a shop with clothes she didn't like, buying things she didn't really want to wear.
Well, Dad had wandered off somewhere. Into the men's section, she supposed, since it would make sense for him to be off that way. Maybe she could grab something she did like, but... What did she like? Asimov's castoffs were the things she really liked to wear, she supposed. Sleek things...
Pausing in an aisle, she stopped fiddling with her ancient black ipod nano to look back around a rack of clothes. Green scales? On a girl? Well, okay, it wasn't too odd as odd things went...
For the second time in as many days, she found herself staring wistfully, almost creepily longing to be like the other girl she saw.

"Oooh," Kash said as a rack caught her attention. "Those look good!" She headed for them, only belatedly noticing that the girl next to the rack was looking at her. Then she paused, her red eyes blinking as her mind racked her memory.
Had she met this girl before? She was lousy at remembering stuff like that, to be honest, but she would have remembered clothes like those, right? "Hi," she said a bit belatedly. "Find anything good?"

Magdelen jolted back a step, quite uncertain as to what the girl with green scales had just said. She took off the headphones- loud, bass-like reverb could be heard clearly from them. Well, it couldn't hurt to talk to her, decided the white-haired girl. Someone like this, she'd probably never see again, so she turned down the volume on her music player and smiled. It looked a little forced, like she hardly ever did anything but frown.
"I'm sorry," she said, even though she wasn't really. "I didn't hear you. What did you say?"

"I asked if you found anything good," Kash said, not phased by the awkward smile in the least. "I'm shopping for something cute, and slightly punkish," she said, motioning to the plaid skirt and the baggy black leg warmers that had red ribbons holding them up right below the knee. Her shirt was black, as well, a dress shirt with a red picture on the back of a dragon. She even had a plaid newsboy hat tilted on top of her head.
"You look like you've got good taste, so I figured I should ask!" she added with a grin.

"Oh," she said, looking down at her clothes. She did like these, but she hadn't seen anything like it on her admittedly limited travels through the store. Mostly she had been sulking about having to shop here. "I haven't been looking around much," said Magdelen. "But I like your clothes. The hat is nice." She could never pull one off, especially in plaid, but it looked good on this stranger.
Then she looked around, and spotting a white shirt that laced up the front, she pointed it out. "That looks nice," she said, gently touching one of the ribbons. "It would be nice with your skirt. Don't you think?"

Kash looked at it, hesitating. Who knew how long her good luck would last, she asked herself. "I do like it," she admitted. "But maybe I shouldn't get white. I have bad luck when it comes to wearing white. It's like stains are attracted to it."
But it looked so cute, her inner clotheshorse said. "Think they've got it in green or red?"

"We could look," she said. "It would be right nearby, don't you think?" She certainly didn't know, since she had never been in this particular shop before. All that really mattered to here were the gaudy, photoshopped pictures of girls her age plastered on the wall and the really weird-looking logos and labels. Magdelen leaned over the rack, feeling self-conscious; because of some of the treatments for her condition, she really smelled like medicine. "Sorry," she mumbled, flipping through the rack.
There! "I found a really dark red one," she said, pulling it out to show the green-scale girl. "But the other colors are all yellow."

"Eww, yellow," Kash said, wrinkling her nose. She didn't mind yellow in paintings and stuff, but she wasn't very fond of wearing it. It always made her look sallow. "And what for?" she added as she picked up the red shirt, looking around for a mirror. "The yellow? That's not your fault."
Then she headed for a nearby pole to see how the shirt would look on her.

She didn't notice? The scent of sickness, like something gone sour and bleach, seemed pretty pervasive to her. Magdelen pulled the sleeves of her leather jacket over her arms and frowned. The other girl seemed pretty nice, but she already knew that you couldn't really trust how people acted on the outside.
Still... she followed the girl's tail, paying no particular attention to the clothes hanging on the racks. "What are you doing," she asked, clearly confused.

"Mirror!" Kash said. Sure she had noticed the smell, her sense of smell was closer to a dog's than a human's. But there wasn't anything the other girl could do about it, right? "Ohh, looks good!" she said, holding the shirt up to her. "And it's my size, too! Awesome find!"
Then she looked around. "Now either pants or a skirt, which do you think?"

"Oh," said Magdelen, ivory eyes following the mirror's reflection back to the other. She just grabbed whatever looked good. It didn't really matter, anyway. "Um, pants, I guess. Denim or slacks, I guess. But not too long, 'cause then it would look trashy. I think. It would look nice if they were ankle-length, maybe a centimeter longer?"
Only then she couldn't wear them with flip-flops or sneakers with visible socks. "You'd need sneakers, though," she said, "with socks you couldn't see. Or boots."

"Boots!" Kash said, liking the idea a lot. "And a belt, you know, one that's too long so it hangs down over the hip?" Then she stopped. "But we haven't found you anything yet. What are you looking for?"

She grinned, finding the other girl's cheer infectious. "That sounds like it would look good," she agreed, but she came up short at the question. What was she looking for?
"I don't know," she said. "My dad wants me to get new clothes, since I grew. I've never been here before, though."

"Hmmm," Kash said, looking at the other girl thoughtfully. "What do you like to wear?" she asked. "You should always wear stuff you like to wear, right? And since you just grew maybe you should try a few different things out to find out what that is!"
Then she started with the most simple question. "Do you tend to get dirty a lot? I do, and that's why I wear dark colors. But if you don't you could go with lighter ones!"
