i currently have a 20 gallon tank with four fish. i have a needle gar, a paroon shark (which i will be taking back to the store for someone else to purchase for it has grown to large and leaves my fish in danger), i have a jaguar catfish, and then my pride and joy which is my black arowana.

i will be moving up to an 80 gallon tank and will be getting a few more fish. i will be purchasing a phoenix fish to go with my arowana which is known as the dragon fish, a tiger catfish, and really hoping to get a king king pleco and armor pleco.

any of you peps have other suggestions or thoughts on my community please let me know.

i think that 80 gallon is too small for all those fish
i dont even know if 80 gallons is big enough for an arrowanna
heck i saw a 300 gallon tank and it looked too small for an arrowana

well it is true it is a little small but not at this point in time. still little. they will grow to be 3-5 feet long but it takes a good 30 years for them to get full grown.

my philosophy is
ALWAYS think of a fish as being fully grown
so i never think of arowanas as 4 inch fish (or however big people sell em)
i think of em as 4-5 foot giants and i'd never buy one unless i could give it like a pool to live in XD
if you cant provide for it RIGHT NOW at its full size you may not be able to or willing to later

and i dont think it will take it 30 years to get too big for the 80 gallon
fish do grow surprisingly fast

maybe just keep it alone in the 80 gallon that way it has a better chance of having good water quality and less of a chance of getting sick and dying WAY before its time

i wish you luck with it! my boyfriend likes arowanas and would like some but we'd totally have like...a 4 foot "pool" set up for any cuz thats just a BIG fish

well 80 gallon tank will last me at least two years and you need to learn growth rate of all the fish you own and my arowana is the slowest of them all
some grow fast in which case 80 gallon wouldnt last long but with black arowana it will, and if i save a dollar a day till i need to upgrade ill have more then enough to do it. My philosophy is prepare for the future dont contemplate it.

um
prepare for future not contemplate? if you are preparing wouldnt you be contemplating?

and growth rate depends on water conditions and food
your fish will grow faster and at a more normal rate if you take THE BEST care of it
GREAT water and varied food
if you have crappy water your fish will become stunted, malformed, and not live as long and the same ole boring food wont provide it with the goodies it COULD and SHOULD have...i swear i have like 5 different kinds of food for my fish XD

THAT is what growth rate is dependent on
fish dont REALLY have a set rate

i just hope your fish lasts as long as it should
30 years is a long time
if you at least keep it alone it would have the best chance :3 would have better water conditions too cuz big fish have big bioloads

fish do actually have a different growth rate
i had a silver arowana that grew 4 inches in a month and a black that grew 1/2 an inch in the same period
same water and food
people will try to make them grow faster by over feeding and i feel sorry for those fish
they will get drop eye and get sick and such
and they will only get fatter (those people should not own fish IMO)

Yeah I don't agree with that whole over feeding. Poor fish. How is your big fishie? I remember you asked if it was sick or a different type. I hope it's just a different type. I'm getting a figure 8 puffer after I finish setting up the tank. It's going in it's own brackish tank. Weird how they naturally live in fresh but do better in homes as pets in brackish water.

EDIT: ok decided to do dwarf puffers
SOP CUTE

my arowana is good, he is just in his 'ugly' phase. i just added a baby flowerhorn to my tank and it is so adorable but i need to separate it for a while till it grows some cause it is small enough that it may become a meal poor thing.

i agree that dwarf puffers are cute, what are you putting it with?
PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 9:33 am

they are going to be alone in their own species tank because they are nasty little fin nippers
i COULD put them with my current set up because of the bio type similarity but my flowy finned fish wouldnt appreciate it.

thats true but i dont like having just one type of fish in a tank. to boring to look at IMO. unless there is more then one color razz
PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 1:59 pm

oh but do you know nothing of puffers XD they are SO AMUSING and cute! they could never be boring. heart and some fish NEED to be in species tanks or else it just gets crazy @_@

i like themes. my big tank (55g) is labyrinth fish (mostly betta...about 10 females and 1 male...and one random wild type betta that i THINK is betta falx...the pet shop people didnt even know they had it XD)
the two biggest fish are a pair of pearl gourami
and then i have a pair of honey gourami and a pair of killifish and a chocolate gourami which isnt doing to hot (hardest gourami to care for) and i think only one kuhlli loach now

not to mention the 8 males in separate tanks
and now my puffers (once i set the tank up which i should do now XD )

my fish store just got in knifes so i might get one
they are so playful
i love em so much
PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:41 pm

they get real big sweatdrop well 1 foot...dont think you have a 55 anywhere for it do you?
you should slow down on the large fish XD and if they get sick you can kiss it good bye sad i had one
got ich and even with a small bit of meds it died
you MUST try to treat with saltwater bath
they dont have scales so meds just kill em

HA
big....
i have arow and gar that get big i will have to remove knife in the future cause it is to small lol and i dont need to slow down cause they grow slow
i use bath before meds cause that is more chemicals and is never good for a tank
anyways i didnt get the knife...i took the sick turtle at the store and am just gonna get back to health then i can trade in for somthing else or keep but i dont trust turtles once they get bigger
