The sun was out, and the day was hot. Jua layed at the edge of the den, lazily rolled onto his back, staring out at the others playing. On days like these, he found himself zapped for energy, and usually spent his time sleeping.
Today, he didn't feel like going out with his twin, so he was left behind in the den. Jua rolled his eyes backwards to look upside-down at the bleak savannah.

Matope'Dimbwi wasn’t sure what he should do with himself. His family members were running around having their fun, but he wasn’t really the kind of puppy that liked to play games. He would much rather sit outside and guard the den when he could, looking out for the others to make sure nothing attacked them and they didn’t get into any kind of trouble.
In his mind, he was a great protector.
But his parents were near so that meant he wasn’t needed, thus leaving him without the slightest idea of what to do. Sighing, he moved over to his brother, as he was the only one lying down at the moment. Flopping over him so their bodies made and X on the ground, Dimbwi smiled slightly.
“Why aren’t you playing?” he asked his brother.

Jua huffed out as his brother toppled on him.
"It's too hot to be playing....." he rolled onto his stomach, eyeing his brother. "Why aren't you out there?" Jua's voice was whiney; he didn't have the energy to deal with his curious sibling.

Dimbwi rolled off his brother after a moment, landing in front of him and shifting around so that they were facing one another. He watched the pup for a moment, taking in what he had said with a thoughtful frown. It was hot, that much was true, but hot enough to not want to play?
Then again, he wasn’t playing either.
“I have a den to protect!” he claimed, tail beating against the ground and kicking up a small cloud of dust behind him, “I have to make sure everyone is safe and sound!”

Jua ruffled his brow; his brother was serious. Trying to hold back a small laugh, Jua rose from the floor of the den, shaking off dust. "Protect the den? From what?" he glanced out onto the savannah, where his family played happily. His eyes narrowed, trying to think of what could possibly want to harm this family of his. "Besides, with mom and dad here, you don't need to protect anything. They're a lot bigger than you, and it's their job." Jua's face showed sympathy, and he was unsure as to why. He wagged his tail side to side behind him, not knowing what his next move would be.

“Anything!” Said the young puppy in return, unaware that his brother was amused by his comment. He was being perfectly serious about needing to protect his family and the den they lived in. If he didn’t do it, who would? No one, that’s who. He was the only one who fully understood what it meant to be a protector.
Except for maybe his parents… maybe.
“They can’t do it forever!” he protested deeply, on his feet and prowling around. He was still smiling, content to believe he was needed no matter what his brother said. “You don’t want to protect the family? What do you want to do, then?”

Trotting over to his brother, Jua touched his nose to Dwimbi's. "But we won't always need protection, you know?" a grin slipped onto his face, and he turned away. "Sometimes you should just be quiet and let momma and dad protect you!" Jua bolted over, chuckling to himself, and tackled his brother, causing a great ball of dust to rise around them.

“It’s not a matter of NEEDING protection,” claimed Dimbwi rather loudly, letting their noses touch to show that he wasn’t backing down from his point, “you protect your family because you care about them, even if they say they don’t need it! That’s what I’m going to do. No matter what you say! I’m not going to just sit around and let the parents take care of everything! That’s just silly.”
He let out a short gasp of surprise when his brother charged him, bracing himself instead of trying to get out of the way. Falling over on impact, he rolled over on top of his brother, pinning him for the moment. Their weights were fairly similar, so he wasn’t going to be able to hold him against the ground long.
Given the opportunity, he nommed harmlessly on his brother’s ear.

Feeling the slight pressure on his ear, Jua tussled his head from side to side, attempting to shake his brother loose from his ear. "But when mamma doesn't need to take care of us, we'll all be big!" Jua puffed his chest out, trying to make his small figure expand. "You'll see; when we're all big, we can protect ourselves!" jumping around happily at the thought of himself as an adult, Jua whirled around and stared straight at Dwimbi. "We should go out." he held a wicked grin on his face, and anyone would know that this meant trouble.

“I bet you won’t! I’ll be there to protect you, even if you don’t think you need it!” Dimbwi protested as he rolled with his brother, trying not to smile though failing in that endeavor almost completely. He was having too much fun scuffling with his brother. Speaking had made him let go of the ear, but he was alright with it. There would be time for more ear biting later if needed.
Getting to his feet, he locked eyes with his excited brother, tilting his head to one side as his smile faded. “Hm? You mean out of the den? But where?” Oblivious to the thought of trouble being had, he was more than happy to go where ever his brother wanted to go. Had to protect him.
“Let’s go then!”

"Of course out of the den, silly!" Jua sneezed momentarily, then returned to his thought. He began to run out of the den, laughing playfully to egg his brother on.
He ran until he found a hollow tree that had fallen over. Jua ran inside, panting heavily. He hid silently, making no sound until he felt his tail being moved unwillingly.

“Hey!” Laughed his brother, charging out of the den after him. But Dimbwi had lost sight of where the boy had gotten to, unaware that he was hiding in the felled tree not too far from where he had stopped to look around. Blinking, he frowned thoughtfully, not about to let something like losing sight of Jua get the better of him.
So he sniffed at the ground, following his brother’s scent towards the tree. “I know where you are!” he taunted as he drew closer.

Jua thought his plan was magnificent; he'd hide until his brother was in a vulnerable position, then tackle him to the ground.
All of this went wrong, of course, when Jua eyed a snake sliding around his tail.
"Ah!" letting out a girlish squeal, Jua bolted from the log, running directly into his brother, landing them both on the ground.

“What’s going on?!” Yelped the guard dog, hearing the squeal, “do you need my help. I’ll save- AH!” He grunted as he suddenly found himself getting tackled by his brother. He was knocked off his paws, landing in the dirt with a light plop that managed to kick up dust around him.
Tail beating the ground in irritation, the puppy looked up at his brother, who had come to land on his chest.
“What’d you do that for?!” he demanded.

Oh my. Had he really been that frightened by a snake?
Feeling foolish, Jua lifted himself from his brother. While he had been scared by the snake, there was no way he was going to let himself show it anymore.
"Um...." his eyes were led back to the snake, slowly slithering around, minding its own business. "I just uh, tripped." Yeah. Of course he did. There was no fearful pup here.
