Owen slinked through the darkness in the forest. Everyone was asleep at the teepee and his mother was off doing who knew what. More than likely she was off somewhere with his father. They had the strangest relationship compared to everyone else in relationships at the teepee. It made him wonder what on earth had brought his parents together, though knowing his mother she saw it as a challenge that she needed to prove she was right about. He sighed and shook his head. There he was being analytical again just like his father. That made him huff in disgust. He wanted to be nothing like his parents and all of their strangeness. Shaking his head again he continued on his way to where ever.

Hmm. Night-time. Her favorite of all the times. It was the perfect blend of darkness and spook, with just a dab of mystery. Plus, hardly anyone was ever around. It was 'too dark outside to go and play' or 'Kalonas lurk at night...it's not worth the risk'. Whatever the truth, it didn't matter. Night time was by far the best.

It doesn't hurt to mention that her Mumsy and that annoying younger sister of hers always slept during the night. Rainbow Sherbert, as she was rudely named by that stupid mare she HAS to call mother, did not want to be bothered by either of them for they never really seemed to accept her. Well, Tiramisu did....but she never talked. And if she DID talk, it was about her Daddy, or GrandDaddy, or brother. Never, ever about anyone else. How often can someone talk about the same thing before they are considered boring? Mumsy 'hated' her, too...but not as much as she did Bertie...since Tira was the baby of the family. Ugh, whatever. As long as Bertie had a legitimate home to come to whenever she liked, it was good enough for her. Her family was as twisted, messed up...too many soquili running around from different parents but also same parents type thing. No one ever stayed connected, save for her Uncle Ian, who had a mate that he loved and didn't leave.

Whatever floats everyones boat, she supposed. Family was always going to be family whether she liked it or not, and she cared deeply about all of them....if they were to be in any harm. It wasn't as if they expected her to show her affection. That was something that she liked about all of them, they were bouncy and flamboyant, and didn't care if she never talked to them like a daughter or a sister, or whatever....should.

That was why Bertie liked the night time. To get away from all that. To be herself BY herself, and not have any worries at all. And technically she wasn't ever by herself, for her imaginary, invisible friend George stood by her side from the day she came out of her basket. As to what George's looks were, or species for that matter, was unknown even to her. All he had was a name, and a personality. They could talk for hours on end, and when other soquili came upon her and saw her talking to...nothing they would always give her strange looks. Screw them, it didn't matter what they thought! She was happy being friends with George, he was always there for her.

It would be, though, nice to find someone....real. Some with a shape that she could see with her eyes instead of her mind. Someone whose laugh she could actually hear, and whose smile she could actually watch form. Someone whose conversations weren't limitted to things that she started, and finished. It would be nice to walk the moonlit paths in the forest, and hear hoofsteps other than her own. She met a few soquili, but none of them lasted very long....none of them were friends. The thought of never finding a friend...or even a lover didn't bother her too much, as Bertie was incredibly independent....but still....it would be nice....

Only time would tell....

Owen continued on through the night. He should have woken Ramiel up and dragged him along. Both were about the same age and as different as night and day. The other stallion was way too stuck up and needed to get out more and have fun. But nothing Owen did ever made the other change in any way. He never got mad at the pranks Owen pulled and never really laughed...in fact he never did anything. As the black stallion began to analyze his friend instead of his own family he realized he was better off leaving him at home to sleep cause he wouldn't be any fun to bring along anyway.

The black stallions mind then switched to the other that he lived with. Dustin, the black wind stallion that occasionally was at the teepee was yet another mystery to him. He seemed like he didn't have a care in the world and came and went as he pleased. The only one he really talked to was Settia, who was the oldest among them all, and Sadie who was yet another mystery. Even his own mother was a mystery as he had no clue if she had any family other than his sister, father, and him. If you could call them a family. They really didn't act like the other family that lived there, which was Settia's family. That family was always doing things together and getting together and stayed in touch. His family wasn't like that. He hadn't seen his sister in quite sometime, his mother and father were always off doing their own thing and he had never met any of his father's family and he knew there were a lot of them. His mother had no clue if she had any other family or not and didn't seem to care.

During this whole thought process, Owen had stopped in the middle of the forest. He soon realized he had done this and growled at himself. He was again being way too thoughtful and analytical for his own liking. He needed to find something else to occupy his mind before his thoughts drove him crazy. Though if anyone else were around and had seen him they would already think he was.

The mare, so very close to turning around and walking out of the forest, heard a noise. Someone...or thing seemed to be marching toward her. She geared up ready to fight whatever mystical beast her crazy little mind decided to make up. That was it, afterall....wasn't it? Just something that she thought up to give her company...nothing else. There would be no soquili in his or her right mind to walk around the forest at this time. Or were they crazy, like her? The noise stopped almost as abruptly as it came which intrigued Bertie even more.

This had to be an actual living, breathing creature. A soquili hopefully...and by the sound of it, it probably was...oh what joy! Perhaps since said soquili was wandering about by themselves so late at night, they had the same mindset as her? Would she be able to connect with them? Oooh, the anticipation of what could come was too much, the small mare took off running toward the noise she once heard...

...Only to stumble across a stallion, young....she could easily tell, by the way he held himself up....and lost in thought. Had he moved an inch? The stallion, whose black coat blended in so well with the surroundings (good thing she had night vision, would she have seen him them?) could have easily been frozen there, for all eternity. What? Oh no! Bertie was not about to let that happen. Whatever horrible creature had done this to him was going to pay! PAY! The tiny mare began to gather small sticks that fell from the dead trees above. Maybe....maybe she could make a weapon? If this stallion was in danger of being frozen forever, she was going to help him!

But then a growl escaped his troat....she heard it loud enough to where she believed now he really wasn't frozen in the forest forever. Oh! Well...there goes her fun but at least the guy was safe, right? Right! "Hey, buddy...thinking about something really intense, were you?" She giggled and pranced her way over to where he stood, showing herself. "Sorry, I just found you standing there, and I thought 'this guy must be in trouble'. So I was going to stand guard of you and fight off all the evil that was to come....I...."

Uh...a bit too much information coming out of her mouth? Was he going to run away, cause she did just make herself sound immensly foolish. "Sorry! My name is Rain-uh, Bertie. Just Bertie, thanks."

Owen's ears perked at the sound of another coming his way. He hadn't been paying attention to his surroundings being so caught up in his thoughts as he was. It was a good thing, though, that she didn't seem to present any kind of ill intentions as she giggled and pranced his way. She looked innocent enough, he thought, as he looked her up and down and she was pretty cute too.

"My name is Owen and I wasn't in any trouble, that I know of at least." he said with a smile and a chuckle. He wondered what he had looked like standing there to make her think he was in trouble. "It is a pleasure to meet you Bertie and I applaud your effort to stand guard for me."

He didn't think that if any evil did come to harm him if he really was frozen that she would have been able to do anything but it was a noble effort and he thought it was cute. "So tell me, what's a mare like you doing out here in the middle of the night all by her lonesome? Aren't you worried that some evil may come and get you or freeze you like you thought it had done to me?"
PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2009 11:08 am

Owen? Sounded kind of like her half-uncle Ian! And she loved his name it was so fancy. Owen! Oh, what a wonderful name! "Hello good sir Owen." She giggled again, saying the name with a funny little voice, the way she thought it should be said. "And really? Good. Cause I know what it's like to be in trouble, but I've never actually been hurt from it, I always fight it off. And thanks! It's a pleasure to meet you too! I try though, I do....I like being protective."

If it was real evil that the stallion would have faced, like say a Kalona or a Mutant there wouldn't be a chance in hell that Bertie could defend both him and herself, but in the case that it was the evil she created in her strange mind, she could. She knew what the 'evil' she spoke of could do, even though they didn't exist. It was just a fun world she lived in, and imagined, just for a second, that Owen was in her world too.

"I'm always out by myself, Owen. Especially at night. My Mumsy doesn't care for me too much, so she kinda wants me gone. And I don't really have anyone else to travel with. I don't mind being by myself, it's fun. But no, the evil knows not to harm me." Bertie grinned at him, and admired him back for caring enough to ask. Most didn't....most just mocked her for being silly.

"What are you doing all by yourself, since we're on the topic?"

He raised an eyebrow at her calling him Sir Owen and with a little funny voice at that. None had ever said anything about his name before though he tried not to take it to heart. Maybe she just liked his name and the way it sounded or something. She seemed to be in an awfully energetic mood for this hour of the night but then again some liked the night time better than the day.

"I think everyone knows what it is like to be in trouble and for those that haven't, they will be receiving a rude awakening when they find themselves in it suddenly." he replied casually making conversation. He had nothing better to do and it wasn't like he always met someone when he was out wondering about at night. Most slept during the night.

He was a bit surprised to hear that her family didn't seem to care for her too much and he wondered why. Though his own mother really didn't care what he did either. He did know though that she loved him in her own strange way. It just wasn't typically what mothers were like. "I'm sure your mom likes you in her own unique way. I know my mother is hardly ever around and doesn't really show to much interest in me but I know she cares in her own way. She just has a different nature than most mothers." he said thoughtfully and then grimaced. He was analyzing again as he did with every topic and subject he came across and he really hated it. He shook the thoughts out of his head quickly at her next question.

No one ever really asked why he was out at night by himself. He was a stallion and able to care for himself so no one ever asked and yet again he never met anyone before while he was out wondering at night. "Umm, nothing really. Just wondering around really with no place in particular to go and nothing really in mind to do."

Bertie's mind didn't click together like the average soquili. Or at least that's how she viewed herself. She was intensely unique and out there, and didn't care what other creatures thought. The only one whose opinion mattered at all was her Mumsy's...even though Vanilla Swirl disagreed on everything her eldest daughter did, and practically despised her for it. But Bertie longed for her Mumsy's approval, no matter how much she lashed out and rebelled away, 'Nilla's opinion was the only one she took to heart.

"Good point!" She pipped up, laughing at both herself and him. "Very valid point, you win!" The mare wasn't the best conversationalist herself, because most of what she said either made no sense to the receiving end, or she just didn't know what to say. But the mare tried, she did...whenever she could. Tried to grow up past her former issues and get out there more in the world. Just like Vanilla Swirl would want.

"Thanks, that may be a factor. I mean I'm not her only daughter anymore, my young sister is now the keeper of that glory. Tiramisu gets all the smart remarks about being immature now, instead of me. I'm back, out of the limelight. So my Mumsy has slowed down on the insults. Maybe she really DOES care." The comment was made half-heartedly, her voice both sarcastic and sincere. What the stallion said made perfect sense, but there was still that huge option of Vanilla just not like her daughters because they were girls. 'Nilla has always hated mares, from as far back as when she was born. Every mare that Bliss met, his daughter hated, thank goodness the second batch of children were all boys. 'Nilla would have gone crazy with jealousy.

"I'm sorry your Mumsy is never around. See, mine IS and that's also what bugs me. For not liking me, she sure doesn't leave me alone. But that's really sad, I'm sorry." Bertie flashed him a genuine frown, truly sorry for what he went through. Weren't mother/son relationships supposed to be ridiculously strong, and father/daughter ones the same? Poor guy....

"Well...I'm here now so maybe we could take a walk together, and talk? It doesn't have to be about our Mother's, if that topic is too sour for you." The mare was simply just asking him in return, she felt that if someone asked you something, like 'hey how was your day', you ask them the same question back. Polite thing to do, right? But Bertie did actually want to spend time with his stallion, he was...interesting. For one, he had mother problems too.

Owen raised his eyebrows a bit at her declaring he had won. He hadn't been aware that the conversation was something that one could win or lose. But by the way she acted, it seemed as if she really didn't want to talk about it too much. He could respect that and wouldn't push it. It wasn't his place anyway.

"Eh, it's alright. My mom does what she wants and I do the same pretty much. Less fights and less of a hassle that way. Besides shes still busy doing who knows what with my father. I don't know, they have a strange relationship as far as I am concerned." he said simply. He had heard both of his parents stories about how they had met and why they were together. It was definitely something that was out of the norm. He was interested though that she also had a sister. He hadn't seen his sister in a while and wondered how she was doing. Amaris and him never really were around each other much though he felt a certain sense of protectiveness over her just because his was his sister. He wondered if all brothers were to some extent like that but that was a question to ponder another day.

"A walk sounds nice and I don't mind at all what we talk about. I'm not really sour over the subject of my mother. I just try not to think about it too much or try to understand it cause then I begin to analyze it and then I start thinking too deeply about it and get frustrated. Its just annoying really." he said with a bit of a nervous chuckle. Some thought he was too a**l with his analyzing of simple things and of things that really didn't matter much. "So you said you have a sister? I have one myself. Her name is Amaris and she looks like my mom. I look more like my dad, color wise. But Amaris has his markings and I have moms." he said casually thinking of something else to talk about.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:31 pm

Perhaps it was the way her mind clicked,, but when the stallion spoke of his parents doing god knows what together she started an uncontrollable giggle fit. Call it immaturity, but the mare found it rather funny. Had he realized what he said.....how he said it? Perhaps Bertie was just thinking too much on something that didn't mean anything. Whatever the case, she couldn't stop laughing.

But to talk, she had to. Taking a deep breath the mare pipped back into the conversation. "I guess that makes sense, I would really like for my Mumsy to leave me alone. But I guess it's also a good thing she's involved. At least I know I can count on her to be there if I need help. Which I never will." Bertie had a ton of siblings and in her opinion, just a little too much. Two older half-brothers which in one of them disappeared and the other was too daft to function properly, a real brother she hadn't seen since birth.....and a young brother who was just as daft as the oldest. She never knew what it felt like to be protected by someone who cared...heck she never had someone who cared. It didn't bother her though, as she was incredibly independent. But perhaps it would be nice to have someone to fight her battles.

So that's why she fought her own. That's why she traveled alone.

The mare began to walk further down the path the two of them were already following, motioning the stallion to follow her. "Aye, I understand how that feels. I don't really over-analyze too much though, nothing is really worth getting yourself worked up over. But it's fine that you feel that way." Bertie smiled at him, being sincere. "That's cool, do you see your sister often? And hmm, you two don't look alike? I suppose that's alright, Grandpapa said Mumsy and her brother don't look anything alike. But yes, I have a sister, she's really nice - for once - and not annoying. Just ridiculously shy. And she looks nothing like me, we're half sisters. As far as parents go, I look literally exactly like my Mumsy, save for my hair color, which is my Pop's."

Interesting turn on the conversation, indeed. It caused the mare to laugh again, turning her head so she could look at Owen as she walked. "Do you like having such a small family? I was born into an already huge one, so I don't know how that feels, but I would like to know....seems easier to handle."

Owen followed after her and wasn't all too sure why she had suddenly started to giggle. He shrugged and figured that giggling was better than yelling. It was better to have someone laughing at you than the have someone mad and angry with you.

"I suppose its nice to have someone to go to when you need it. Even though my mom isn't around I have others around that I can go to if needed. They aren't family but that is alright." Owen lived at a teepee that had many other Soquili living there. Few had just wondered upon it and had chosen to stay but most were family of the original Soquili who lived there. They all were pretty much male as well so he had lots of stallions to look up to growing up and had learned at least something from each of them. "I've never really had a need for help from any of them but I know they are there. It just easier to be on my own and wonder." he said.

Yes, he wondered a lot on his own and had never asked anyone to come along with him. He was like his mother in that respect though both of his parents were travelers and wanderers. That's what made them kind of perfect for each other even though their personalities were so completely different.

"No, I haven't seen my sister in a while. I don't even know where she is. My whole family is a bunch of wanderers I guess." he said chuckling. They pretty much had all gone their separate ways. "And we don't look like but we have similarities that you would be able to tell we are siblings. I don't mind having such a small family. My other herd mates are from a huge family and some of them don't even know all of their relatives there are so many of them. I would think it has to be hard trying to keep in touch with a big family but then again if you look at mine, its hard for us to keep in touch as well." he continued on thoughtfully. He was sure it had to be alot harder to have a large family compared to a small one. Though he didn't have much experience with large families.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 06, 2009 1:11 pm

If Owen had voiced his opinion about the laughing vs. yelling scenario, Bertie would have jumped on that band wagon in seconds. There was nothing more the poor mare hated than others yelling, at her yes....but especially at others. What good did yelling do? It only provided the yell-e an opportunity to want to leave the situation.

And never come back. It was a shame Bertie had too many family members, otherwise she was sure she'd already be long gone. "I think it's better to have someone who isn't your family. So the opinions aren't bias and stupid, they're genuinely good advice givers." The mare grinned back at the stallion, motioning for him to walk side-by-side. Wasn't it more personal that way?

Wandering was a specialty of the mare's, but there was always that need to have someone near her. Thus why she created the fantasy world her mind was constantly occupied on. And the fantasy, invisible 'best friend' that she thought went everywhere with her. She literally had conversations with someone that she was convinced could respond back to her, she'd laugh and argue with him...yes, it had a gender too. But only recently did the mare realize how strange it seemed, and her little friend disappeared for a while. Now the mare was content with herself.

Especially at that exact moment. How many mares were walking with a handsome stallion, talking about their personal lives this late at night? Close to none, that's what!!

"I suppose that's got it's good side though, then you can't really get close to any of your family members, and it barely calls for a serious heartbreak." Bertie smiled again at Owen, enjoying their conversation. He was intelligent, and he wasn't like a normal stallion just trying to get her to 'spend the night' with him. "It's very hard keeping up with everyone, but I suppose that's what keeps me coming back. If all I had was my mother, I'd be long gone. But I get wind of new additions, and come back to meet them. It's fun, it's gets annoying. It's family, ya know?"

The night continue on as she walked with the stallion, but it wasn't going to last forever. Perhaps the two of them could think of something fun while there was no sun to be found? "What do you normally do this time? Just walk around by yourself? I know I sound maybe foal-ish, but let's do something FUN!!"

Owen nodded at her opinion and moved up beside her as they walked. Others outside of family really were not usually biased and so their opinions usually would hold more truth in them than that of family members. He was sure of that pretty much. If one of Settia's children brought home a mate she did not really like, she wouldn't say a thing about it but would suck it up and be nice to them all the same. While he would just tell them he didn't like them period. Though he was sure it was not such a good idea to be so blunt about it.

"I agree with you on that one. Others outside of your family really don't usually hold biases on things. They have no gain or loss in the opinion to begin with so it doesn't benefit them to not tell the truth." he said back thoughtfully.

Wondering was also a particular interest to Owen. He got it from both of his parents who both were wonders but he rather enjoyed be out a night more since no one could really see him with his dark coloring. It did become lonely at times and tonight was one of the rare nights that he had actually found someone else up at such an odd hour that was willing to be him companion for a while.

"I don't know much about serious heartbreaks with family or in any other case really. I've also been some what of a loner I guess since I am usually alone. Tonight is a very rare exception but a good one." he said to her with a smile. "I have no clue if there are new additions to my family or not but I see what your talking about with it all. The other Soquili I live with are a large family and the two just had new foals and their previous children just came back to help take care of them and to meet them. They are a very close connected family. There is only one who doesn't seem close to the family, he hasn't been around in ages from what I hear." He had seen all of what she was talking about with big families growing up along side the one that he lived with. He even felt part of that family and welcomed because they pretty much took him in after his mother and father left to wonder together. "Family is what you make of it...I suppose." he said absently as he thought.

He was brought out of his thoughtfulness at her questions. "I usually just walk around by myself. Nothing all that exciting really. It's pretty boring but its what I do and you don't sound foal-ish at all! What did you have in mind for something fun?" he asked curious as to what she was thinking. It had been a long time since he had done anything that was fun or entertaining considering again that he was always alone.

Being blunt had it's ups and downs. On one hand, the strange mare believed that if you were blunt then at least everyone knew who you truly were. You weren't hiding anything, and so if you didn't like another, they would know. It was better to be honest then lie and have said soquili find the truth later on down the road. So if you weren't blunt, it caused for a bigger heart ache.

At least that's the way she viewed it. Sure she wasn't the most blunt mare out there, but her mind always told her there was a fine line between being rude and being honest. Sometimes some things didn't need to be said.

"Indeed! It's better to hear the truth from a strange anyways, because even if a family member was honest, they'd always be hiding something. Family members have issues with not wanting to hurt your feelings....well, most of them anyways...." Her Mother didn't care what she said to Bertie, she didn't care if she caused her daughter to cry. She cared about herself, mostly...

The mare giggled when he gave her the off-hand compliment, it was nice to hear someone tell her they enjoyed her for once. She herself enjoyed the conversation they were having, it was nice to have someone to agree with. Someone who went through very similar issues with her and didn't judge her. "Wow that seems very intense. There are some stallions in my family that have disappeared, my own Father and brother for intense, and my Mother's mother and brother. It's for the best though I think too big of families are just too much to handle. Makes me want to run away. Be myself, you know? It's like there are too many mouths trying to influence the rest of my life...." Bertie nodded slowly, taking in his words. She honestly wondered what she'd do with such a tiny family like he had, or one that was never around. Would she prefer it?

"Really? I'm sure you've discovered multiple interesting items along your walks then? And uh....I'm not sure really, I usually go exploring....but um, maybe we could have a race? Running is always fun, you get exercise and I'd personally love to see if you could beat me!" She wasn't too good at racing another soquili, all of her races had been with an invisible friend.

So it wouldn't hurt to try her skills?

He felt as if he had hit a sore spot with the moment she made at the end about most family members not wanting to hurt your feelings. He decided it would probably be a good idea to move from the subject for a while and focus on something else that was lighter to talk about. But she didn't seem to think too much on it and just accepted things for what they were. He supposed that was a good disposition to have when things were in such a way that you really couldn't change them.

"I don't really pay attention to my surroundings when I go on my walks so I have probably seen many interesting things but haven't really noticed them before." he said chuckling casually. He really needed to pay more attention to things instead of analyzing trivial things that really didn't matter and that he really couldn't change either. It was going to get him into trouble one of these days.

"A race does sound fun and I haven't run or raced anyone in a really long time. It should turn out to be interesting." he said with a wink to her.
