There came a time in every mare's life where one would grow curious about certain things. Things like the ocean. The warm golden brown and henna tattooed mare stood on a cliff a good hundred feet above the crashing waves. Her blues eyes stared out over the water, blankly, as she listened and took in the scent of the sea. She felt very much at peace during times such as these where it was just her and the world. Somehow she wondered if she was getting the thing that all mares grew curious about wrong though. She had heard it in passing, though thinking about it now she was pretty sure the mother daughter duo was speaking of a boy.
Her eyebrows furrowed together slightly in thought. "A boy hmmmm..." Her eyes wandered over the horizon. She wasn't really all that curious or fascinated about them at all. She had grown up around them. Really she wanted to see interesting and new things. Places she had never been, things she had never seen, words and songs she had never seen. She wanted to fill her mind with things to share with her family every time she came home.
"New things..." Her eyes drifted down so that she was looking straight down into the water below. What lived down there anyway she wondered. The water seemed so violent and restless, what could live down there? Almost like an answer or perhaps an order to stop wondering the wind picked up and blew straight into Jia Li's face. Rather alarmed she took a few steps away from the edge and tried to focus her eyes on the thing that could be felt but never seen.

Blue eyes snapped open suddenly, the sound that filled her ears was deafening, painfully disorientating. Scrambling to her hooves she leapt in fright, scrambling away from the massive grey wall looming over her. One back hoof hit air, stones dislodging from under her hocks as she teetered on the edge. With a panicked wicker she threw herself forwards again, scrambling to safety to press her side up against the granite cliff face that had so spooked her.
Trembling, ears pressed flat back against her head, she carefully peered round at where she had almost gone. The ground dropped away all of a sudden. The sky stretched out above and beyond, and that roaring sound persisted, but now she could pinpoint its source.. directly below her.
Taking deep breaths the mare slowly calmed down. The abrupt wakening from absolutely nothing.. and nearly plunging to her death on what ever it was down below was certainly not a pleasant way to wake up.
Where was she anyway?
Easing away from the cliff she crept to the cliff edge and peered down. Rocks.. and water.. Lifting her gaze she stared at the softly rolling expanse of blue that spread out from the cliff to the horizon, vanishing in a faint haze where sea met sky.
Backing up slightly she cast her gaze over her surroundings. A path, where she had obviously lain whilst asleep, led both up and down. The area she stood in was slightly wider, a natural resting spot. Bare rock, sky.. and sea. Where was she? What had happened?
Disorientated, the blue-scaled mare shook her head. There was no point staying here.. she had to move. Why, she wasn't sure. But a deep need to leave the small area filled her. Turning from the startling view the slender Kirin mare started up the path, climbing carefully along the cliff side.

As the wind eased off Jia Li stepped up to her previous lookout once again. She didn't see any harm standing there but if the wind truly wanted her to move she was sure she would find out soon enough. Naturally she would have no choice but to comply, only a fool would go against something so powerful and she was not a fool. The only reason she ignored it now because she was still greatly curious about what could live in such a place.
As her eyes drifted over the seascape she found her answer. There was some creature heading up the cliffs. She stared at the figure for along while before deciding that the likely did not belong on the cliffs. The did not look like any bird that could roost there. In fact, they didn't look like a bird at all.
A little worried over the safety of this creature she turned around quickly and walked along the edge of the cliffs. She kept her eyes trained on both the figure and the edge she walked on. It would be a shame if she fell while trying to help someone else escape the same potential fate. The closer the got the less it seemed like the other was having too many problems. Still, it would be just down right cruel for her to ignore them.
The makeshift path she followed led her so that she was in a position above the other. From here she noticed something peculiar, scales. There were scales on it's back but she could still see patches of a normal coat. Was this a creature from the sea that wore scales of a fish? She wanted to find out but first things first. "Are you alright?" She asked allowing her voice to raise to what one would call a normal speaking level hoping to be heard. She did not want to shout and startle the other.

So intent was she on placing her hooves on the path, she didn't realise anyone else was around. The path had narrowed drastically from the ledge she had woken up on, and now she crept along with her flank pressed tight against the cliff. The wind rushed up from below, tossing her long mane over her face and whipping her tail against her legs and rump. Unable to shake the irritating hair out of her eyes for fear of loosing her footing and plunging to her death, she squinted through the tossed locks, carefully moving along the path, slow but steady.
The sudden voice above was almost lost in the wind. Slender black ears pricked, swivelling to pinpoint the call even as she kept her gaze on the path in front of her. Reaching a section where she could place all four feet comfortably, she paused and craned her head up, blue eyes searching for what ever she had half-heard above the wind. The shape of another above her surprised her, eyes widening before one closed against the force of the wind and the hair that still whipped round her.
"Hello?" She called in reply, straining to make herself heard above the roaring of the wind without filling her lungs too much and toppling herself off the narrow path. Studying what looked like the cliff top, she realised she wasn't that far from it. The edge only a short distance above her head. Lowering her gaze again she resumed her careful creeping, now wanting off the cliff side and onto safe ground once more. Maybe the stranger would be able to fill in the blanks for her.. like how she ended up asleep on the cliff side.. what she had been doing before that.. and where she actually was!

It seemed she hadn't been heard over the wind. Or perhaps she had. The other stopped after a moment and looked up. Either they had heard her or they were just checking how far it was to the top. Whatever it was she had been seen and likewise saw what could be made out of the other's face. They seemed to be fighting a losing battle against the wind and their own hair.
She made a sympathetic face for the cliff climbing creature. She fought such battles whenever she left her hair loose and it was one of the most frustrating things. It made it next to impossible to see. Her mind stopped on the thought and she stared down at the scaled creature. "Oh no."
Quickly she moved away from the edge where she stood to search out where the thin path leading down the cliff's side was. It did not take her long to locate it though she was a bit worried to see it. A part of the very edge had crumbled away so that the last foot of the path looked as though there was barely enough room for a pigeon to sit. She had been planning to go down to assist the other up but there didn't seem much chance of that now.
Instead she stayed where the sloping path and the main land met preparing to warn the other about the path ahead of her where she could be heard over the wind.

The head she could see suddenly vanished.. retreating back from the cliff's edge. A feeling of panic crept up on her, making her breathing speed up and her coat prickle with tension. Had she been abandoned? Would she die without knowing anything?
Get a grip! She hissed mentally at herself, ears pinned back against her neck to escape the sharp whipping of her hair and the ceaseless scream of the wind. Panicking would get her killed.. she had to keep moving. Taking a careful breath, she resumed her creeping shuffle. Inching her way along the tiny path, scales scrapping up against the rock as she pressed warily against the cliff. Slowly, painfully slowly, she gradually crept closer to the top.
Suddenly the edge drew level with her head and she risked a glance sideways. Spotting the hooves of who ever it was waiting there she took another step and slid her muzzle up over the edge, jaw resting in the sparse, prickly grass. "Hello?" She said softly, taking a moment to look up at the other before she caught sight of the path where it petered out. Panic filled her again as she realised how difficult getting off the cliff would be.
Swallowing she shifted forwards, leaning into the cliff and stretching her head, and then her neck forwards as she slowly crept closer and closer to the top.

A jolt of adrenaline or something of the sort shot through her body as the other came back into view. From this distance she could tell that first off this was a mare and secondly that she really truly did have scales. Jia Li took no time to wonder over exactly what this mare was. Instead she lowered her head as far as she could to the ground without bending her legs to better be heard. "Hello, my name is Jia Li. I'm here to help you." She said softly giving her a reassuring smile.
She was not exactly sure how she could help. Getting down would be impossible and she really had no way to widen the path to make passing easier. She only hoped that this was one of those times where a word would help as much as an action.
She moved with the other, taking slow steps and keeping her head low. If worse came to worse she could take hold of some of the other's mane. Painful as that would probably be it was the only thing she could think of to do. If the worst possible thing happened then it was likely that the pain would be worth it, at least she hoped so.
