User ImageDia loved water. She liked to wade in it, doze by it, listen to the sound of it trickling or babbling by, and most importantly, to drink it. Which made winters particularly frustrating for her.

Oh, not the cold. Cold water could be very nice if she didn't drink it too fast. No, the ice. The frozen water that could be difficult to break through to get what she wanted. Like today.

The water in this particular pond didn't move quickly enough to keep it from freezing and there was a decent thickness of ice over here at the edge. Dia pawed at it with a forehoof, one ear up and swiveling for any sounds of another approaching, the other pinned in irritation. She muttered as she kicked, "Water shouldn't be hard. Water should never be hard."

Initially, Sandsablaze wondered if he should intrude.

Though he thoroughly enjoyed the company of most any type of mare, he learned a long time ago that if the first thing you heard from a lady was a complaint... you'd best move along. Seldom did such creatures have the finesse to veil their emotions and play The Game, and rarer yet was the lady who would see beyond her own complaints to appreciate beauty in another when they saw it.

Hard lessons, all of them, strewn with a great deal of petty heartbreak.. though none quite so firm as the current lessons the were dragging his feet forward.

Yes, he could almost hear the rest of those goody-two-shoes stallions now.

"NEVER let a lady suffer, NEVER allow her to do what you can do for her, and NEVER let your own pride get in the way of her needs."

Bother.

Well, that would be why he was now shuffling his way through the snow laden underbrush, nickering a greeting as he did.

One ear swiveled toward the sound of the stallion's nicker and she took a breath, prepared to explain that no, she wasn't in trouble. Or danger. And that she hadn't hurt herself and she could whack a hoof against the ice just as well as anyone, thankyouverymuch. She'd been fussed over when she didn't need or want to be, before.

She kept it to herself, though, because the hoof whacking she was doing wasn't getting her far at the moment, and really, taking her frustration out on some random soul wouldn't do her any good or get her any water. So she looked over her shoulder.

And actually saw he-who-had-nickered. And she didn't really need to hold herself back at all. "...good morning to you, too."

Both ears flicked back initially in mild reproach at the brusque greeting. You'd think the mare hated males with the way she spoke! But with a nearly invisible roll of his shoulders, the golden stallion decided that he'd be better off just finishing what he started and get the pleasantries over with. At least from his side anyway... since he now doubted she'd reply in kind.

"My thanks, it has been a good morning thus far milady." He replied when he had pulled near enough to be heard without strain. The snow wasn't something he necessarily enjoyed, but he had adapted enough to it, and he cold definitely appreciate those moments when it was too cold for moving outdoors and one was forced to remain in the company of whomever you shared cave- or teepee-space with the night before. As it stood, today's snow was still new enough not to impede his progress too much, and he noted with some amusement why she had been grumbling about 'hard water.' Apparently the pond from which she wanted to drink had frozen over.

"Less so for you it would seem. Would you like a spare hoof to make the task simpler?"

It wasn't that she hated them. She'd simply yet to find one who didn't disappoint, in some manner or another. And she'd yet to figure out that more often than not, changing them was going to take a little more sweetness than she usually doled out.

She glanced down at the ice, then back up at him. His hooves did look heavier, and the scuffs on the ice where she stood were just that. Scuffs, not even cracks. So maybe he would be better at chipping through to the water underneath. Could she swallow enough pride to let him do it, though?

Ear flicking toward him and away, she lowered her head in a kind of nod, and backed off a step or two. Not sheepishly, not embarrassed. She just backed up. "If you can get through the ice, I'd thank you. I've tried for a while," she informed him. After all, she wasn't helpless. "But it might just be too thick."

Sandi's nostrils quivered slightly, but he kept his thoughts to himself. Time with Blais and the others must have tempered his fiery rebuttals more then he thought, or perhaps he'd just as rather not have more hoofmarks added to his rear if the burly painted Protector caught wind of him being rude to a stranger.

But still...

She'd thank him only if he succeeded? HUMPH!

In any case, he moved forward without a word, mindful that his hooves where not as large as they appeared beneath his winter feathering... but he DID think his hind leg that sported the giant brass shackle would be more then adequate. He'd hauled the damn thing across leagues of sand and mountains, so to his way of thinking, that leg must be a fair bit stronger then the rest.

"Might want to avert your eyes Milady, in case ice shards go flying." He said brusquely, dropping any attempt at courtly finesse in favor of getting the task done. He'd chosen to ignore her final observation, though not because he thought she wasn't capable in general, more that she obviously WAS incapable of breaking this particular sheet of ice, and he wasn't interested in someone restating the obvious. She didn't know him or his strength, and being the low man on the Elderwillow totem pole, he had gotten quite used to manual labor.

So without further adieu, he swung his hindquarters around and lashed out with the shackled foot.

It wasn't the kick that caught her attention, though it was certainly impressive enough in its own right. Not that she watched directly. He was right about flying ice and she turned her head somewhat, just in case, and watched from the corner of her eye.

So it wasn't so much the kick as the shackle itself and the glint of light it caught that had her watching so intently. And missing the fact that the ice did in fact crack with a sharp sound. Moments later, a chunk of the stuff sank into the cold water beneath, making a place big enough to get a muzzle into, at least.

"What's that?" she asked without apology when he'd stopped kicking and there was no more danger of flying things. She nodded toward his shackled leg by way of pointing and gestured with her nose. "What's that for, there? On your leg."
