Mateus, a wolf who someone reached adult stage without a guardian. He was head of his village along side a old wise man. There was a time where the man tried to bond with Mateus, but the wolf was stubborn and refused and the man left him alone. He liked being free.

The wolf was a storyteller. Though most humans could not understand most other totems, he had a way of getting them to hear them. He often said his stories often reached the others soul, letting even the most stubborn freeze and listen. He got so intense in his stories, slightly acting out most parts and giving each character their own voice. He loved making new stories, but most of all, telling legends from many years ago.

His tribe was called Hardizan, and it was placed near the heart of the forest of the land. Often the males were craftsmen, and here in the forest, most totems would be carved. Mateus loved watching the forest give them life, or more importantly, to be able to pass along old whisper tales to new young ears.

Mateus walked through the forest, one where he knew the path well. He admired the birds, the flowers and trees, and wished he could speak with them. He wondered what they had to tell? What would the trees have to say? They've been around much longer than he, could he learn something new? He hoped he could talk to them one day.

As he padded silently though the spring flowers, fresh dew lay on their petal, he saw another wolf totem and a girl. Not many walked here, and he never saw the totem before.

He smiled. Maybe they'd like to hear his stories? He walked over to the confidently and sat down. "Hello!" he said bluntly, not caring if they were friend or enemy. "What are you doing here, girls?"

Mateus noticed the females alertness. "No need to be afraid, child...ren..." he added the hume in his sentence. "I'm guessing you thought I was a female for a moment, did you not? You were calm for a moment." he was calm and collective. He didn't seem like a threat with the way he talked.. and looked. No fighter would wear flowers in his hair and stop to smell them on the path side. "No need to worry!" he cried out quickly, laughing. He was not the average male!

He perked his ears and swayed his head. "Studying, eh? Studying the plants, I assume? Plants are very interesting!" the totem always questioned how plants work, but had no one to tell him the answers he desired for his questions. Like, can they talk to each other? What do they sound like, if they have a voice? He wished he would know one day.

Mateus blinked and cocked his head. "Did that plant.. just move? And.. Spider? I do not see a spider?" he was confused. He did not know plants were able to move on their own; At least, so quickly. "Hmph. She will not learn anything unless you let her learn how to do it wrong, first. She will learn by her mistake after and know how to do it safely and know how to handle it if a mishap happens." his teacher like lecture. made him sound older than he was. He could seem cruel to the children and new totems sometimes. He learned the hard way, as well. Learning how to do it wrong was the first lesson he taught to do it right so you can advert doin it wrong after.

He smiled again and wagged his long tail, the bell echoing out a high note than seemed to calm even the trees. His tail moved back and forth in the grass, muting the bell from a high shrill to a dull flat metal-on-metal sound, like a cow bell. His ears perked when he felt a hand touch his head. He liked being pet, as long it was not a scruff.

"My name is Mateus." he replied, pressing his head into her hand. "I am a story teller and totem-head of the tribe Hardizan not far from here." He looked up at the girl. "Are my words reaching your soul to let you hear me, or do you just have the power to hear other totems? Either way, it's nice to have a hume to talk to." He smiled. He was too self confident in his story telling 'powers', as he called it. Even if he had slight Rain Crow illusion powers, opening ones soul made the hume head of the tribe cry with laughter. It was absurd.

Mateus smiled again at Malia and looked over the other wolf. "And you, child? What is your name, and what is that tree on your head? It's very nice, but a rather... clunky looking accessory if I may say so myself."

He did not know anything of Avani. If she proved interesting enough, he would surely make a legend or story of her, as he often did with anything else interesting.

(Brown recluse are not that poisonous)


Mateus blinked and smiled. "I call everyone a child, do not mind me. I do not call those who are obviously older 'child', though." Secretly, he still called some elder totems child.

He yawned and lied on the grass with his ears erect. "But.. I did not feel nor hear any wind. And I know the wind well! There is no wind today, look, the tree's leaves aren't moving and the clouds are quite stationary. The grass does not bend and my fur does not chill." Yes, he knew the wind quite well.

Adverting his eyes from everything that could be moved by the wind, examining them, he looked at Earth Mother. "Oh, silly! Brown Recluse rarely bite. And even then, it's not as poisonous as you say. I've heard about them from the hume elder of my tribe. They can cause a lot of different ailments, but are not like Widows and kill in seconds. The worth she could get is a legion of dead, rotting skin and a lot of pain." He grinned. "That is, if it ever bit her. More bites is more lethal!"

He winced at the public-display-of-affection he witnessed. He didn't like seeing it. "Oh.. well.. that's nice. A shaman? Of what, may I ask?" A good story starter! A shaman in a far away land learning--- something. With her very ... suspicious... totem!

"Ahhh. I think I heard a story of her once on my travels. Maybe even met her. I've met too many people..." He was ashamed to have forgotten her. Having only heard the story once, he could not remember much either. "Guide?" he said, looking still at the ground. "Sometimes I wonder what good they are. I do not have a human to look after. Is it any fun?" He cringed thinking of the elder of the village. He was silly, trying to bond with him. But Mateus liked his freedom better. He didn't want to look after him all the time.

The male shook his head. "Ahh, I've laid is a field many times. Flower, though can move on their own, I've seen it, do not move that fast. Teaching her about the earth, and your making up things to why it moved.

Are you hiding something?" He was suspicious. She was teaching the girl about the earth, but said the wind moved it when there was no wind. And saying it moved on it's own, when plants can't move that fast. The follow the sun, the sun doesn't move that fast...

Mateus shook his head. "I'll never understand it." he said simply, rolling over to listen for the rest of the answers.

His ears perked and the single bell rang in the wind, off his tail. "And earth goddess..." he sat up properly, his bell ringing mysteriously as he did so, "You don't say. That makes sense!" he smiled.

"Me? I control nothing grand in particular. I consider myself a psychic though," he looked up proudly. "Would you like to experience it?"

Mateus smiled. Maybe a goddess would understand!
"I touch peoples souls with my stories!" he grinned a goofy one, but then laughed. "Apparently, that sounds really dumb." He pawed the ground. "I can toy with emotions, and create visions behind your eyes and throw you into my stories. Literally. Other than blank staring, I take you there, and show you my words. Do you understand?" His explination made it seem he would tell an extensive story, but instead, he was talking literally. He had children stare blankly, but actually be in a field of red blooming flowers where the red of the world were gray. I was a living vision, but it only worked if the person he was telling was willing.
"What kind of story would you like to hear? Soaring high with birds? Maybe about fantasy creatures - like fairy's that dance in circles every full moon cycle?" he enjoyed every kind of story, and enjoyed telling any kind of story.

Mateus smiled and closed his eyes to think of a good long one. Short stories were to pass the time, long ones were for living in far off lands.
'This is the story of... two wind spirits...' his eyes were still closed. 'But as I say, they were only spirits; floating bulbs of shining light, slightly sparkly. Someone could have mistaken them for a firefly. They were tiny.

Suddenly, blackness. It was not nighttime, but the clouds rolled by too fast and the sun sank too low. It was dark, but only in their minds. Ourside of their eyes was a lush field, grooving clouds, welcoming sun, and songbirds.
Mateus, though eyes closed, saw the same area they were in, but dark. He at least hoped Avani was willing enough to see his visions.
Then, Mateu's smile got bigger. Two "fireflies" appeared between them.
''Savena and Savera!'' Mateus cried at them, "it's been a while since I told about you!"
